Hello,

We rescued a dog that ended up needed to have a paralyzed leg amputatued, stroy here:

https://www.gof.....ypuppyfund

So it has been about a year, everything is great, he gets around just like his brother.  They play VERY rough, and chase each other.  We let him jump down on and off of the couch and bed, use stairs etc, because he has no problem doing those things.  Tonight we noticed blood coming from in between each of the toes on his remaining front paw.  There are no punctures, but it is the result of chafing going on in between those toes.  I cleaned it well with chlorhexidine and put ointment on it, but how can I prevent this from happening in the future?

As it is we are going to keep him from running around for the next few days.  I assume that it will eventually toughen up, but I would have thought that would have already happened.

Thanks,

Adam

It could be a food allergy.  My daughter had a dog that used to lick his feet a lot and had really bad ear infections - it turned out that he had food allergies.

They look like very sweet dogs!!

The best prevention for sores between the toes is powder such as Gold Bond powder.  It keeps the area dry.  You can also use epsom salt soaks. If there are sores under the feet then booties can often help prevent abrasions.

If your dog has actual cysts between the toes (interdigital cysts) then you will probably need an antibiotic from your vet.

No cuts, just blood.  When we cleaned it off some of it was dried but the skin in between the toes was raw and irritated.  We cleaned it very well and it seems to have subsided, but the gold bond is a great idea... I know he will want to eat it though.

Cornstarch will give relief and if they do eat it, it is ok.
