Hi there
My cat tasha had her leg amputated 5 days ago. She is currently taking a drug called loxicom once every 24 hours 3.5kg dose. She seems comfortable most of the time but can very suddenly go from puring to screaming hissing and biting. I am worried it might be phantom limb pain and came here for an opinion.
Hi Tasha and family, welcome. Please consider registering so your future posts won't require approval and will show up right away.
Sorry to hear you're having recovery challenges. How come Tasha lost her leg?
I'm not a vet, but hopefully our fairy vet mothers will chime in soon. It sure sounds like phantom limb pain. I would talk to your vet about pain relief options for her, such as gabapentin.

I would ask your vet about gabapentin for phantom pain and maybe an injection of Buprenex (a narcotic) for pain if needed. Did she have a Fentanyl patch? Sometimes those can make cats a little loopy!

When I saw your question I thought it was my original question brought back to top of forum. I just went throught the same thing with my cat and it was a long process. Here was the treatment: 5 days of metacam, then 2 weeks,3 times a day of 0.1ml bueprenorphine and 3 weeks of Gabapentin. After the initial 3 weeks ,the Gabapentin was given for a longer period of time with reducing dosages. Dosage is all relative to age and weight of cat and also kidney function. My cat had a real hard time dealing and had frequent pain outburst. I can't say for sure if it was all the meds or time or both, I do believe Gabapentin made a difference but everything seemed to work out. He is back to himself running around, he still tries to use the missing leg and he does twitch often but no more visible signs of pain or fits. He is more sensitive and protective though now so he is less tolerant of our other cats. I know what its like, it was hard seeing him in pain but we both worked through it and it was a few weeks after surgery before the crying and hissing stopped. Each cat is different but it should get better. Good luck
