My 11 year old rat terrier had an amputation of her rear leg 11 months ago for STS on her lower leg/paw area. Chest Xrays were negative at the time. She has been doing well (quite active for an older amputee) and has had no more/new symptoms until I suddenly noticed a new area of concern on her front paw same location two days ago. This area looks similar in color to the other tumor but it is not a solid lump yet and is more soft. Would it be common for her to grow a new STS? I've made an appointment tomorrow to have it checked but it seems weird that if her first tumor would've spread that it would've most likely affected her organs and not another limb. I'm so nervous and really thought we were done with all of this cancer crap.
Hi logaddie, thanks for registering to join. Your posts will now be automatically approved.
This is the best place to post that kind of question so hang tight, I know our vet experts will try to help very shortly. In the meantime I have no experience with STS but I know others here do and hopefully they will chime in soon. I have my paws crossed that it's not another tumor. Please keep us posted.

Well, I have no answers. On the positive side, the doc says she looks great. Lungs sound good and lymph nodes are normal so the chance of mets is slim. On the negative side, the lesion looks similar to her previous one. So, he is guessing it is a brand new tumor or possibly just an infection at her dew claw area. If it's an infection, he didn't want to poke it now and risk a bigger infection. So we will treat with antibiotic pills and ointment for 2 weeks and re-evaluate as needed then. I am agreeable to this as obviously we can't amputate again and the course of treatment will be the same whether we biopsy now or in two weeks. Praying for an antibiotic miracle!
Well so it's good news in that there's nothing majorly wrong, and for now you don't have to worry because you have a plan. Hey that sounds like a good idea; why waste time worrying about something that hasn't happened yet and may not, right?
We have our paws crossed for the ABs to do their thing and knock this lump to the moon! Come on Sadie! Keep us posted OK?

Pam, it is the exact same spot as her other cancer was on her back leg. It's just so weird. She does not have a dewclaw to remove. On her previous leg we had the tumor removed but couldn't get clear margins and it grew back within 1 1/2 months. I'm just frustrated because she is so active and healthy and has been through so much already that she doesn't deserve to go through this again. I appreciate the support and encouraging thoughts. Will keep you posted.
