Hi all,

I know this can become an issue with tripawds, and FayeRaye recently developed a marble sized boil on her back toe pad. She is starting to lick it due to the discomfort. What have you done to resolve this issue?

Thanks!

Eileen

Oh how scary, I'm sorry.

This isn't unusual, we've seen Tripawds with pressure sores before. These search results have several discussions about pressure sores on the paw. Usually a vet wrap and a bootie does the trick. I hope it does for Fay Raye too!

Oh dear!  I had it happen and I sure panicked when I saw it the first time too!  Surprisingly, my Comet had gone 12 years without any problems (born a tripawd) and then suddenly a steril cyst appeared out of no where!  It filled up really quickly and then would burst.  We went to the vet and had it lanced to make sure it wasn't a foxtail or infection.  It was more of a pressure sore.  But you do want to go to the vet to ensure it's not a foxtail or sticker stuck in it.

Here's what our resident vet, Pam (tazziedog) recommended:

Tazzie had a cyst like this on her remaining front foot and when it flared up I would soak her foot in Epsom salts for 5 minutes twice daily and she would wear her bootie during the day to help protect the bottom of her foot.  Before we put on the bootie we would use Gold Bond powder between the toes to dry things out (NeoPredef powder from your vet works great too and has a topical steroid).  The only way to cure these is to remove them surgically, preferably with a laser.

Nice photo!

Good luck!

She was born with a deformed front leg and a tripawd all of her life.

The best treatment is usually Epsom salt soaks and protection for the foot (booties).  If the sore is deeply infected then your vet may need to prescribe some antibiotics.
