My 12 year old beagle, Kasey, had her right front leg amputated almost two months ago. Her recovery went well and she adapted great! On Saturday night she went to go outside into the fenced in backyard. When I opened the door she refused to go out, turned around quickly and tripped over the dog bed pillow. When she tripped she fell on her right side and if her right leg was there it would've stopped her fall. Well since her leg is not there she fell onto her side and rolled over once. She got up and was limping on her back right leg. She has been putting weight and walking on it but is still favoring it. Today when I got home from work, it looks like her "ankle" on her right leg is swollen. When I push on it she yelps and kinda barks at me, but like I said she is still using the leg (but still limps on it too). She is having a difficult time due to the fact that she is putting most of her weight on her left legs.
I haven't called the vet yet because I was trying to see if she had just pulled something and if it would heal on its own. Of course I have a million different thoughts going through my mind because she tore her ACL in her left leg January 2013 and had surgery on that too. So of course I am thinking she tore something, will need more surgery and I can't handle that right now.
I feel like a horrible pet mom because I haven't been able to take her to the vet due to my work schedule and the fact that it's only me and two other dogs 🙂 Any advice or suggestions?
Thanks,
Danell
Danell you are not a horrible pet mom, that's a lot to deal with. I'm sorry she had a spill and hope it's just sore. Have you tried massage or heat and ice? Listen to our Tripawd Talk Radio podcast from Sunday, Lisa the PT talks about how to alleviate pain with heat and ice therapy.
I'm sure you'll hear back from Pam soon. Hang in there and keep us posted.

Thanks Jerry, I will check that out on Sunday. My "plate" is so full right now and I feel like every time I turn around something else happens. I'm a doctoral student working on my dissertation, teacher, mom to three dogs, daily life routines, dealing with trying to refinance my house due to a recent divorce, car issues, and of course trying to take extra good care of my Tripawd. I am so looking forward to my spring break!

I'm a big advocate of ice after an injury, it helps with both pain and swelling. If she would let you I'd put an icepack on her leg for 10 or 15 min a few times a day (schedule allowing) even once a day would help. Restrict her activity too, if she isn't self-regulating. Specifically don't let her jump up on furniture or go up stairs if you can help it.
Hopefully a sprain that will heal with a little rest.
