Interesting article in the New York Times that looks deeper into the reasons why there are more clinical studies with dogs, instead of cats.

Why Scientists Love to Study Dogs (and Often Ignore Cats)

An interesting discussion with several scientists about why more feline cancer and behavior studies aren't performed in the veterinary world. But the ending was just perfect:

Also, a colleague raised a question that didn’t occur to a single expert I interviewed, which shows that devotion to science can sometimes limit your point of view.

“Is it possible,” my friend, who has had both cats and dogs, asked, “that there are more dog studies because the cats won’t consent?”

Of course. Why didn’t I think of that?

I have had this forum in my drafts for a while and have been too busy to finalize it... this topic is near and dear to a lot of Cat Lovers Hearts and I have my two bits to add to this topic, so please bare with me, it’s a novel!

Ever since i was born, i have had Catssss in my life as well as Dawgs. They have always been very special beings to me! My love of animals has been my priority all of my life! Some people may think I’m nuts, but I believe that the wolf is my totem and the cat is my guide! That’s just the way I am! But that doesn’t mean I’ve got them all figured out... I don’t and probably never will!! I believe that Cats are very spiritual beings, that are super sensitive to not only all things ‘earthly’, they also have a connection to all things ‘Universal’!! There is a reason that the universe gave Mama Catsss the name of ‘Queen’!!

For centuries Cats have been alternately revered, exiled, used, abused and once again they are finally being seen for what they really are...  Alien HooCats in a beautiful fur coats!!!

They have in most recent history (and by some to this day still🙀😿!!) been looked at as ‘disposable’ creatures. They’re good for catching rodents and otherwise they’re ‘just a cat!!’😾 “There’s thousands more” 🙀 Lots Of people just haven’t given Catsss a chance! They are amazing creatures to get to know, if they let you in! And if you don’t like Catsss, they will bug the crap out of you until you do!! And if you REALLY, REALLY don’t like Catsssss, well.....😼

I live in a super rural area and most people around here only have cats in order to keep the rodents at bay. They shrug their shoulders if their cat suddenly goes missing, possibly killed by a predator (or just maybe their cat figured out they weren’t wanted and hopefully found a more caring home!) and they just call a neighbour and ask when their cat (Queen😽 👑 ) is going to have another litter!!! Do they ever think about the pain that their cat may have suffered in the process?

As a prey type animal, Cats (Queens 😽👑) have instinctually learned to have large litters and have them often. They not only have had to protect themselves from the creatures in the wild, but they have had to do be especially Wiley with us wild Hoomans!

In the past 20 years or so, a group called PALS (Protecting Animal Life Society) has been educating folks around these parts on the benefits of spay and neuter on both their dogs, but especially Cats and they have assisted hundreds of people in the care for their Pets. PALS have done an excellent job of opening peoples eyes to the fact that cats have feelings too!

It’s true!! 😺 I have been a part of this group for 10 years and I have been a part of that conversation with folks. (of course right!!😻) I have seen the change of attitude with many people over the years, it is a wonderful feeling! I used to be called out on a weekly basis, to try and trap cats in the various little towns and take them to get fixed. They would then have to go to a foster home, as we have no shelter in the area, and get adopted out from there. As you can well imagine, that there are not enough people for the number of cats that get found! But there is a lot of loving and caring people here that do an amazing job of fostering sometimes some very wild kittens for sometime, before they find their furever homes! (I am a Failed Foster Home... they ALWAYS end up staying!!!😻)

We have seen a change!!! Our Cat Trap for the area has got a layer of dust on it! Rarely do I get called out now to rescue and our PALS group gets to concentrate on more awareness and care of our fur babies of all kinds! Plus they get to assist people like Paul and I. (A little fact that very few people knew, is that we received a loan for Stewie’s surgery and Chemo from PALS! We never would have had their assistance if all of their time and money went to the spay and neuter of wild, unwanted kittens! And believe me there were lots!)

I saw the change happening when I lived back in Calgary too. More and more specialty Cat clinics opened up and more people find the ease of having a cat as a companion in their home. It is sometimes easier to go away for the weekend and know that your cats can be looked in on and they will be fine. Unless your a Mum like me who has to have someone come in for the day, so that my ALWAYS hungry fiends 😼😼😼😼 can get fed and cuddled and just hung out with. (And then there’s Stewie who has his Aunty Anne!😁) My animals aren’t necessarily spoilt, they just have us well trained!

The reason for this rambling is to make my point that people’s attitudes are changing towards cats. More and more Hoomans are deciding not to have children early in their lives and sometimes not at all. They (Me, Myself and I included 😁) fill their homes with Pets instead. I know all of you can relate in one way or another. For one reason or another we bring Pets into our homes and we fall madly in love with them and in return they fill us with love, unconditionally!! More and more Cats are coming ‘Home’ and people are ‘connecting’ with them. And therefore more studies are being done for them instead of just on them! BUT MORE NEEDS TO BE DONE!!

I found this Tripawds article to be interesting and super encouraging, that not only are people bringing catsssss back into their Castles, sorry I mean our homes, but they are also starting to go the mile for them in pawsitive studies! And we are starting to see the great benefit for us Hoomans too, within those studies! Bravo for Catsssss!!! We need more studies! Please! Cats have so much more to give than just a pissy attitude! I mean look at us right?! We can be super pissy, but we are still loved by our Dawgs! Cats are such loving beings too, we just need to give them a chance!

I love that Tripawds is trying to help open up its Windows and people’s eyes that Catssssss Do Rule and Dawgs Definitely Do Drool!! 😺

I believe all animals should be given the same chance in life if at all pawsible and that includes Dawgs, Catsss and Hoomans alike! It’s just that Cats need to have us Hoomans speak up a little louder for them! They don’t give the consent, we do on their behalf!

You know, Paul and I had to give away the kids because our cats were allergic to them!! Hahaha! Just kidding you guys! 😜

But seriously, If you have never had a cat purrrrrrr away on your chest, you are missing out on just a little somethin’ very, very special!

Thanks for letting me go on about one of the passions in my life!😻

Awww I read every word and LOVED and totally agreed with what you said here, thank you so very much! clap

I am also seeing a change in people's attitudes about cats, and it's wonderful and all because of the hard work of people like you and PALS. More work needs to be done of course, but hey we humans are slow that way.

I hope some day we can live in a world where all creatures are respected for the sentient beings that they are and how they relate to the world around them. People just can't compare them to one another, animals are all different and beautiful in their unique ways. Cats are what they are, dogs are what they are, and that's how it goes for all creatures. Every species has so much to teach, if only more people would work harder at relating to them in their own unique languages. And the more people recognize this, the more we will learn how to take even better care of their health needs.

Good job advocating for the kitties, Petra!
