It would be fun to see who among us does local community rescue or 'virtual' dog-related volunteer work with local or national groups, and who fosters...or has in the past.

Want to chime in and name your location and the group (or groups) you work with, or have worked with in the past?

You could mention what led you to decide to rescue, foster, etc. if you wish...be as brief or as detailed as you want.

Deb and Angel Lexie* Diagnosed at age 13. Tried radiation first; wish we had amputated upon diagnosis (even with lung mets). Joined Club Tripawd April 2014 & Lexie loved life on 3 legs! Advice: Start physical therapy as soon as your vet clears it, especially hydrotherapy if available :-) See Lexie pics here.

Okay, you asked.  winker Plus, we all should definitely share our interests in case we can at some point help another member!!!

My husband and I have volunteered in different areas (of rescue and of the country!) for about 20 years now.  Our first dog passed away at only 2.5 yrs due to kidney disease.  Broke our hearts and Greg just wasn't at the point of being ready to get another, so I started volunteering with Tri-County Animal Rescue in Gastonia, NC as a way to be around the dogs without having to adopt.  Helped with the adoptions every Saturday and Sunday at Petsmart.  Eventually adopted two dogs from them, once Greg was ready.  Work relocation then took us to a small town in the Outer Banks of NC with no real rescues or volunteer opportunity.  Work then took us to Pennsylvania and it was here that Zeus was diagnosed with OSA and and found this site.  Upon his passing, we started volunteering with Centre County PAWS in the Penn State area.  They had an actual shelter and we would go two or three times per week to work a four-hour shift walking the dogs, cleaning, giving meds, etc.  Through a member on this site, Karen Vizzi (Pegz mom) I learned of the dog transport world and signed up with several groups (The Liberty Train, CherryHarley Transports and Echo Dogs White German Shepherd Rescue) to drive any legs that came through our area of Pennsylvania.  Not long thereafter we moved back to our home state of SC (to stay this time!!!) and started the process of building a house which was all consuming of our time for a while there and we are just now getting back into the rescue world (and looking to adopt) now that we are settled in our home.  Last weekend I jumped in to offer a drive on my first transport since we moved and the legs had already been filled, so I'm looking forward to the next one coming through this area.

I think it is a great idea to share our information, no matter how much or little we are involved, just in case someone needs us at some point!!

Lisa (and Greg, with Angels Spanky, Merlin and Zeus riding co-pilot and guiding our steps!)

Zeus was a Husky mix diagnosed with Osteosarcoma at age 11.  A visible lung met and suspicious spot on his liver meant a poor prognosis-six weeks was our vet's best guess. We decided to fight for our boy and his right front leg was amputated on 12/1/11. We did six rounds of chemo, changed his diet and spoiled him completely rotten. We were blessed with 10 great months after diagnosis. Against the odds, the lung met remained a single met and grew very little over those months. A wonderful furbaby with the most gentle spirit, he fought with a strength that we never imagined he possessed. We have no regrets...

For years I always volunteered with animal shelters. When I was in Seattle and couldn't have a dog, I walked dogs at PAWS every weekend, rain or shine. In New Orleans I volunteered for the animal shelter putting on "yappy hour" events with pets and humans to raise money for the shelter. Shelby and I were a part of the Visiting Pet Program with bi-monthly visits to hospitals and nursing homes.

Things in LA were really busy so we never found a new place but now that Shelby has passed I am going to start volunteering with Karma Rescue here in LA - walking dogs and helping at adoption events. I hope to put my love of dogs and fundraising / event skills to good work and maybe eventually find a new fur-friend. I just know i need to be around four paws and a wagging tail.

Our story: Broke rear leg in June 2013 - non-conclusive results for cancer so leg was plated and pinned. Enlarged spleen in September 2013 and had it removed and was diagnosed with Hemangiosarcoma and started chemotherapy. Became a Tripawd January 8th, 2014 and definitive Hemangiosarcoma diagnosis. Three major surgeries in 7 months and Shelby took them all like a champ only to lose her battle to cancer in her brain. We had 8 amazing extra months together and no regrets. #shelbystrong #loveofmylife

This would be really cool to know, thanks for starting this topic Deb.

Well as you know, our wanderin' lifestyle doesn't enable us to do any kind of fostering but we help out whenever and however we can. One of our most memorable times was working in exchange for rent at an animal sanctuary in New Bern North Carolina (Zeus' Mom Lisa knows all about this place!)

Here's a blog post we wrote about it, and a (really long!) video celebrating this milestone. The incredible woman who runs the rescue is giving him his check-up, she's also a vet:

I think everyone who knows rescue knows that the veterinary community is a big part, we are often the gatekeeperthat prevent good animals from being euthanized due to low income. I've never worked with a specific group myself but my hospital does closely work with Monmouth county SPCA in NJ. I've rescued abandoned animals my entire life and still continue to privately adopt out when I can. Thank god I'm a vet tech and my vets are always willing to look at a new box of snot-nosed kittens :)
