Awwwww Mongo! He cracks me up.
He is a VERY good boy really, even when pushed to the brink. I'm so glad both dogs were OK, that could have ended badly for most dogs. But not Mongo. There is something about him that keeps him from using those big ol' teef to do damage, which is awesome. Not eating the Yorkie really shows that Mongo has a ton of restraint. And the fact that he wasn't phased by cats or your Uncle John is GINORMOUS. These are GREAT attributes in your and Mongo's favor. You know two more of his buttons now: food resource guarding and little/big dogs.
It sucks that you're learning his boundaries the hard way but I guess there really is no way to figure these things out with any dog. Once you know, there's no going back and just moving forward to work on the issues and set him up for success. I feel your pain, and it's not easy at first but I can honestly say that in our 12 years with Wyatt, there were just some things we never quite overcame but we managed them. In return he was a great dog who taught us so much. Like Mongo, he was fantastic when it was just the 3 of us. Not always so much with other dogs or people but we managed to eventually do things we never thought he would be capable of doing. You will get to that really good place with Mongo too (for starters, he has far more restraint than our Wyatt did, that's for sure).
You are doing a FANTASTIC job! Keep it up and stay in touch with that trainer!
P.S. Your mom is awesome too, that's really cool she didn't blame Mongo for the fights, or get upset that he went nuts over the cat food.

HAHAHA!! CUTENESS ALERT DEFINITELY NEEDED HERE!!! I think he knows he's cute and actually enjoys posing😁
So glad he warmed up to his Uncle John! I know you needed that reassurance and can now feel more comfortable knowing can hoise sit for you.
Hope Berklee ,is a more gracious host when Mongo comes to visit next week. I'm sure Mr Berklee thinks jis home is just that.....HIS home😊.
Good that Mongo recognizes that you own the food. Another sign that he sees you has his pack leader. Now his Grandma has to convince him shemowns the food too!
Thanks for the goodupdate and precious picture! I love his markings on his face😎.

Hey guys. Sorry for the long delay in an update. I was out of town for an extended long weekend over Memorial Day weekend and been busy catching up on things since then. Also, Mongo has decided he needs nonstop attention when he's not sleeping, so finding time for non-mandatory computer tasks has become quite a challenge (more on that later).
So overall it's going well. We stayed with my mom again over Memorial Day weekend, and for the most part it went much better this time. My sister watched Berklee (my mom's dog) so that helped quite a bit I'm sure, but even so it's still a good step forward. He even did well enough that my mom left him out in the house all day while she watched him when I was at the Indy 500 (the previous trip we put him up in "my" room). Unfortunately there was another food aggression incident right as we were getting ready to leave and head back home. My mom was chopping some food up to put in the crock pot for dinner and a sealed box of Keurig cups ended up on the floor (I think she opened a cabinet to get something else and the box fell out). When she went to pick it up Mongo growled and snapped at her . He didn't get her and showed a ton of remorse while I was giving him his tongue lashing, so fingers crossed this is the last time. Maybe I need to do some leave it work at home while dropping things on the floor, but he has never gotten aggressive with me over picking up anything (especially non-food) so not sure how effective it will be. But it can't hurt to try I suppose.......
Something else that's gotten pretty annoying is how demanding he's gotten on getting attention. Just about anytime I sit down at my desk he'll come over for some petting and butt scratching. No big deal, but whenever I stop he'll start some non-aggressive growling, and if I ignore him then he'll start barking non-stop. And unfortunately his bark is head splittingly loud. It's probably a good problem to have, but it'd be nice if he would be happy with a few minutes of butt scratches throughout the day rather than 16 hours straight that he goes for, lol.
Anyway, that's my Mongo update. On a sad note during the week a FB memory popped up from a year ago where I had grilled up a bone-in ribeye for Wally on his ~10th birthday. I knew it was probably coming up, but it hit me a little harder than I thought it would. Just the sadness on how much better life was on that day and that I didn't get the chance to grill up another steak for him on his 11th .
And back to a lighter note here's a pic of Mongo on the love seat.
Ooooh you went to the Indy 500? How cool!
Hey no apologies necessary, you have your hands very full with everything going on.
You didn't mention anything about him exercising his jaw muscles on furniture or books or anything, so that's a good thing! I take it he has been eating food and only food? YAY! That's progress!
I'll be honest though, the barking at your mom has me worried. He barked over a non-food item, basically got in her face to show her who he thinks is boss. I worry that it will get worse without some serious intervention by a professional. Have you been able to get anyone to do hands on work with him? I'm thinking that since time is so limited for you these days, why not hire the expert to come here and read your descriptions of his incidents, that would give the person a good head start on figuring out a strategy to deal with his challenges.
Things are getting better overall and once you double down on his behaviorial challenges you'll both find that happy place.
As for Wally, I'm sure that memory hit you hard! It would for me too. But I have no doubt he's having a grilled steak somewhere in the universe, another time and another place, having a ball on four legs and knowing that some day you'll be his grill master once again.

Hi Renee. Thanks for the response. Yeah, I go to the Indy 500 last year. I've made it to 20 straight now as long as you don't count last year against my streak (they didn't allow fans). Race day for the 500 is my favorite day of the year. Probably one reason why the Wally memory hit a little harder b/c I was having the post 500/vacay blues. I certainly hope that you're right about the next life and that I'll get to see my best buddy again.
As for Mongo he has been doing well on not chewing on things he's not supposed to. He did grab ahold of one of my flip flops a couple of times over the weekend, but I think that was more of an attention grab than anything else. I think the thing with my mom was still food aggression. I didn't get to see the whole thing, but as stated she was cooking and he was in the kitchen helping. When the box of coffee ended up on the floor he probably thought it might be food and lashed out when my mom tried to take it. Either way though, you're right about getting some professional help with this. I should have done it before, but I'm planning on asking the trainer I had talked to. Hopefully she'll have some things to work on with him there. I reached out to the lady who trained Wally and Benny for a recommendation, but unfortunately she hasn't gotten back (hope she's ok). So I guess I need to do a little research on a local trainer.
Anyway, thanks again and have a good one!!
Okay, I must confess....before I read anything I scrolled down u til I could see a picture of Mongo!! I knew you wouldn't dare make a post without a pic of his ADORAVBLE self! And he is the cutest adorable dog evvvver!!
So glad you fot to have fun at the Indy 500. What a great way to spend vacay. It is always kind of sad when a vacay is over. We should be able to always be that happy and carefee and stress free everyday doggone it!! And yes, sad days of missing Wally will certainly pop up. Thankfully the happy times pop up the most....and that's exactly what Wally wants♥️
So glad to hear the progress Mongo mjas made. You are doing such a good job of understanding him and help him develop I to the best Mongo can be.
Have to chuckle........anything that drops on the floor in the kitchen, the dogs think it's theirs. If Frankie gets to it before I do, he slams that one front paw on it and "vocalozes and discusses" with me why, if it's on the floor it's his. Fortunately not a "lashing out" situation. I do think Mongo must have some teeny, tiny bit of hound dog in him since he likes to be vocal about everything!
Thanks so much for the update AND picture! I ALWAYS look forward to his posts
Hugs

PS...not only does Mongo have a great Dad, he has a wonderful Grandma too!!

Hey guys. Sorry for the long delay in updates. Busy with work and then out of town again for a short family vacay. Racine, WI which was really nice. I highly recommend it if you're within driving distance. Also, I did try to post an update the previous weekend, but I got pulled away from my computer by Mongo a couple of times, so I got timed out and lost my post
Anyway, things are going well I'm happy to report. Mongo stayed with his Uncle John for the few days that I was out of town and that went really well. Things seemed to go so well that I even jokingly said that Mongo should maybe stay with him full time, lol. We paid John a short visit the weekend before, and we both stayed at his place for 2 nights prior to me leaving town. I think that helped a lot although probably unnecessary as Mongo made himself at home pretty quick.
I was also happy to see that he was super happy to see me and also to be back home (not that I was expecting anything else, but it was still obviously welcome.). Well I had better get going. His normal crate doesn't fit in my trunk unless the back seats are down, so I had/have to make 2 trips to drop him off and pick him up. Since it's been awhile I load you guys up on pics. The first 2 were at John's and the last 2 are last night after we got home and unpacke.
Take care and hope you're both doing well!
Best. Pupdate. EVER! Nothing gone sideways, he looks happy, and you sound relaxed and recharged. YAY! Sounds like a happy dog and dad have reached an understanding. Paws crossed for more good times with you and Uncle John the Bulldog Whisperer.

MONGO!!!! So wonderful to know that you enjoy your Uncle John (and obviously the feeling is mutual) AND that you were wo excited to see your Dad and to go back home! I love how uour Dad spent a little time with uou and uour Uncle John before he actually went on his vacay. You are such a lucky, lucky boy to have found the perfect furever home for you! You and your Dad both needed each other. Of course, Wally already had that figured out for you♥️
I tell ya' what, Mongo takes the most precious smile making pi6 in the entire world!! That first one of him "posing" on Uncle John's couch and then looking up at the camera with that precious toothy smile....CUTE, CUTE, CUTE!!!
I see an extra sparkle in his eyes in that first night home photo. Yeah, he knows he's home and he knows his Dad is his furever Dad♥️
Can never have enough of Mongo and his cute pictures... .....keep 'em coming!
Hugs

Hey guys! Happy 4th of July!!
Thanks as always for the kind words and support! Yeah, things have been going pretty well between Mongo and I since I picked him up from Uncle John's. Maybe it really sunk in that this is his furever home!! He and I did have a disagreement yesterday, but we got passed it and things are back to being really good. So no harm, no foul I guess. Other than that things are going really well with him. I've been giving him free reign of the house when I leave other than when I go to work, and he does really well there. This included yesterday when Uncle John and I went to a Reds game, which I was gone for 4.5-5 hrs. I'm thinking I may give him a shot at staying out while I'm at work here soon.
Also, it's on my to do list to follow up on a call on group training. I really hope the place I'm comfortable with is back to having them or will be starting soon b/c Mongo is definitely ready.
Anyway, I had better get going. Again, Happy 4th and thanks for the support! I think I've used up all of my Mongo pics except this not so great one of him enjoying Uncle John's yard.
WOW! No wonder he liked Uncle John's place, that yard is awesome!
It's so cool that things are falling into place and maybe you're right, it's clicked with Mongo that you aren't going anywhere. What an outstanding accomplishment that you were able to leave him home alone without anything going wrong. YEAH!
Things will get even better when his training center opens up, hopefully real soon. Paws crossed 🙂
Hope you had a great 4th too!!

Hey guys. Thought I'd stop by for your weekly Mongo fix, lol.
Yeah, Uncle John has a really big back yard that Mongo thoroughly enjoyed. My mom does as well. I remember how happy he was running around her back yard when I first took him to her house 🙂
So bit of an up and down week. Mongo was pretty chill earlier in the week but after going to the vet on Wed. has fallen back to his old hyperactive and somewhat anxious self. The poor guy's chin was all chapped really bad. I did some research and thought it was probably chin acne so purchased some cleaning/moisturizing pads, which just seemed to make it worse as by Tue. it was opening up and bleeding. So off to the vet on Wed. Due to his prior visit and since he wouldn't be able to be muzzled the vet had me give him some Trazodone, which definitely took his edge off and then some lol. The vet confirmed it was chin acne and now he's on antibiotics along with resuming the daily cleaning with the wipes, which is a blast to give him .
I think he wasn't feeling well from the acne/infection b/c come Thur. night he was bouncing off the walls with energy similar to when I first adopted him. He's also been showing some anxiety this weekend as he's been trying to follow me out the door every time I leave and barking when I shut the door on him, which he hadn't been doing. Also, Uncle John paid us a visit last night and Mongo was really rambunctious with him her and he was really anxious when John and I left to go get some dinner and when John left to go home later in the evening (he whined like crazy for awhile). On the bright side he's been pretty chill today, so maybe it was just a reaction to coming off the Trazodone.
Speaking of Trazodone I think it triggered an episode of idiopathic head tremors. We had fallen asleep on the couch Wed. night. I woke up and had to use the bathroom, and when I came back Mongo was sitting up and his head was slightly shaking back and forth (like he was saying no) with a high frequency. Initially I was afraid he was having a seizure, but since it was just his head, not violent at all, and he stayed sitting up and got up right after it stopped I think it was a head tremor, which based on some google research is somewhat common in bulldogs and not a big deal (supposedly you can make it stop by distracting with a treat or toy). It hasn't happened since, and obviously if it happens again I'll take him to the vet especially if it doesn't stop with the distraction method. Next time I have to take him to the vet I'll see if there's an alternate med I can give him.
Anywho, it's my last day off before going back to a full work week so I need to get going to make the most of it. Have a good one and thanks as always for the kind words and support.
Oh my goodness. Quite an update! And of course, the picture of his ADORAVLE self is always the best part!!!
Sounds like that Bet visit, along with the Trazedone, really did trigger some stuff. And I imagine the chin acne is irritating to him.
Didn't know that about Bulldog head tremors. The things we are learning from Mr Mongo and his Bulldog quirks...quite interesting. I'm just so glad you are his furever home and that he has brought joy and fun and "adventure " back into your life! And what as adventure he is!!😎

What a ruff week you've both had, poor guy! Yeah it does sound like the Traz threw him for a loop, sorry it got stressful. Hopefully as he starts to feel better and the infection goes away he will go back to being calmer. He sure looks pretty chill in the adorable pic.
I didn't know dogs get chin acne! Or those tremors. We are learning so much from you both!
Thanks for the Mongo Update! Have a great week.

Hey guys. Sorry I've been away for awhile. I didn't realize it had been over a month. I've been in and out of town a lot lately (both with and without Mongo) and super busy otherwise as I've been working to get to go back to my former employer, who is now rehiring, on top of my current full time job.
Anyway, things are going really well with Mongs (as I've nicknamed him). He stayed with his Uncle John for a long weekend late last month when I was out in Las Vegas, and he was great there. He was so well behaved that Uncle John gave him free reign of his house when he was out with no issues. So since then I've started giving Mongo free reign at home when I go to work as well (I was previously leaving him out when I was going to be out running errands, etc.) and happy to report that it's going really well. I have yet to come home to any accidents in the house or anything being torn up, so he's doing really well. Also, we visited my mom last weekend for the first time since May and Mongo did really well there as well. No food aggression issues or anything like that at all. In fact my mom kept telling me about how good he was during the visit.
The only bad news to report is that after FINALLY getting in touch with the place I was hoping to take Mongo to group training, I learned that they're probably not going to start until the beginning of the year. So I need to do some research to find a new place I suppose. Will probably reach out to the president of the rescue I got him from and see if she can suggest anyplace/anyone.
Also, on a sad note 7/26 was 6 months since Wally passed . I was planning on posting a topic on the Tripod Alumni page, but I was flying home from Vegas that day. I did try to post something via my phone, but when I started the tears started really welling up and I didn't want to start crying in the middle of the airport in front of a bunch of strangers. Since then I really haven't had it in me to post something so thinking I'll give it a try later on this month for 7 months.
Well enough of the depressing stuff. Here's some good pics of Mongs!!
