Today I was able to pick Valentina up from the vet. I was really happy until I got home with her and She didn't seem as improved as the vet had described. After getting out of the car she just stood there and didn't want to move. We did finally get her in the house but she sunk to the floor before she made it to her bed. I stuck the sheet under her and helped her back up and onto her bed. Then I felt very sick to my stomach. But I tried to tell myself that maybe she was just tired from the excitement from the trip home and everything. So I gave her some water and let her rest for 4 hours. I called the vet and asked them what to do while she was sleeping. They said to let her rest for a good long time and then take her outside and see how she is then and to call them at 4:00 and tell them how she was. Well to me she was still wobbly and I felt as though she still needed my assistance with the sheet under her belly to keep her balance and to keep her back end from sagging down. I really did expect her to be better than this from what they told me over the phone yesterday. She did stand the whole time she was eating her dinner but I had the sheet under her just in case. Towards the end of her dinner her back end was swaying and starting to sag. I helped her back to her bed and she went to sleep and has stayed that way ever since. She is still in the same position that she was now and it is 7:00. She laid down around 3:30. I called the vet and he said that before he decided to release her he observed her and she got up from her bed there without assistance very well and that she was galloping around the place pulling one of the vet tech guys all around. The guy said "Well there's nothin wrong with her!" The vet said that he was delighted and that it seemed like nothing was even wrong with her. I was kind of confused. That is not how she is now. He said that maybe the car ride home aggravated her condition. She does not fit in my backseat very well and he said maybe she was scrunched up a little and it compressed the nerves again. Well he told me to see how she is tomorrow and to give him a call and tell him how she is doing. I'm feeling disappointed but I know that her condition probably is not going away. She has degenerative disease in her spine and the damage is already done . Controlling the symptoms are what it comes down to I guess. The vet said that she didn't appear to be in pain so that's good but I just hope that after resting at home tonite that tomorrow will be a better day. I also asked him if she continued to be somewhat wobbly if it was ok for her to live that way. He said wobbly was ok and that I would know if she was in pain . She is on Tramadol so she is really sleepy. Back to 15 pills a day. Oh how I hate the pills! But they are necessary right now. Emalee was so happy to see Valentina. After she was here a while she kept sitting near her just staring at her and whining. And of course she sniffed her alot. Even the cat came along to investigate Valentina after she got here. I will let you know how she is doing tomorrow.
Oh no I hope as the vet said that it may have been the car ride home and that she is feeling better tomorrow. We worry so much about our pets and it takes alot out of us so make sure you get plenty of rest too.
Hope for a better update in the morning. good luck our thoughts are with you

Oh dear. I'm so sorry Valentina isn't doing as well as she was at the vet's. Hopefully the vet is right - it was the car ride.
It's so upsetting and just know we are with you in spirit. Plese let us know how she is tomorrow.
Hugs to your big girl.
Comet - 1999 to 2011
She departed us unexpectedly January 23, 2011 at the age of 12 1/2.
She was born with a deformed front leg and a tripawd all of her life.
Add us to the 'hope it was just the car' chanters. (Just the car, just the car.)
Hope she is vastly improved tomorrow. Hopefully she just needs a good night sleep.

Abby: Aug 1, 2009 – Jan 10, 2012. Our beautiful rescue pup lived LARGE with osteosarcoma for 15 months – half her way-too-short life. I think our "halflistic" approach (mixing traditional meds + supplements) helped her thrive. (PM me for details. I'm happy to help.) She had lung mets for over a year. They took her from us in the end, but they cannot take her spirit! She will live forever in our hearts. She loved the beach and giving kisses and going to In-N-Out for a Flying Dutchman. I know it's tough right now but you have to remember to breathe.
When you brought Valentina home after her amputation, she had a really hard time. I know this isn't the same scenario, but I want you to remember how she overcame those huge hurdles. She WILL get there again this time, just keep the faith. We're all cheering you both on!
And don't forget, call your vet if you have any concerns at all! That's why you're paying them.

Not much change with Valentina this morning. She was able to pee with me helping her and she stood the whole time to eat breakfast. I did have to help her back to her bed though. When she is standing I can tell that she wants to move but she just can't figure out how. She stands there thinking about it kind of looking at me and looking around. Then all of a sudden she will try to walk and she does but is still wobbly. She is extremely hesitant about going down the steps to go outside. She stands there for a while and I have to coax her down. I think she feels like she is going to fall since she only has one front leg and her back legs aren't working. I'm trying my best to help her. Everything that I have read about what she has just says that you just have to control the symptoms as much as you can and assist your Dog. There is not much anything else to do unless the pain gets unmanageable or the Dog becomes completely unable to get up. So right now I am still hoping that the steroids help her some more over the next week and I think I might buy a harness for her to help her out a little better. Still keeping Hope!
Sorry to hear that you're not seeing the improvement you hoped for. I know it's hard to be optimistic right now, but I agree with Jerry's post above about overcoming new hurdles. Maybe she just needs to adjust to a new normal and let her body finish healing. There is A LOT to be said for the adrenaline high that causes the vets to see a completely different dog than we see in a home setting. But, even though she seems to have regressed, hopefully the spry girl they saw indicates that her body is at least capable of reaching that level with a little time and work? Still think of you every single day. Keep us updated!
Zeus was a Husky mix diagnosed with Osteosarcoma at age 11. A visible lung met and suspicious spot on his liver meant a poor prognosis-six weeks was our vet's best guess. We decided to fight for our boy and his right front leg was amputated on 12/1/11. We did six rounds of chemo, changed his diet and spoiled him completely rotten. We were blessed with 10 great months after diagnosis. Against the odds, the lung met remained a single met and grew very little over those months. A wonderful furbaby with the most gentle spirit, he fought with a strength that we never imagined he possessed. We have no regrets...

I"m thinking that if she's standing up, even though she's wobbly, she is still getting stronger. Her appetite sounds good, this is a reason to be hoppy! Have you tried using a canvas bag to help her until you get a harness? The handles are so much easier to work with than the ends of a sheet.
Paws crossed for her, we're thinking of you two.
