The folks on this forum were a great support when we needed help and answers as we battled osteosarcoma with our beloved Jack. Losing him was crushing and it took us a very long time to get over his loss. In fact we sold our house and moved because we hated how the house felt without him. It was over a year before we decided we could open our heart up again. Earlier this summer, we brought home a German Shepherd puppy, Oliver. He was all black when we picked him out, but he has since gained some tan spots. Except for the pointy ears, he sometimes looks enough like Jack to give me a moment of pause, but the personalities are very different. Jack was a happy go-lucky cupcake. Oliver so far is a serious puppy and will study things intently. [Image Can Not Be Found]Not sure I've figure out this attaching thing to include a picture of the puppy.
I have to catch myself sometimes wishing Oliver to be more like Jack or to be the perfect dog Saint Jack became in our minds after his passing. I have to remember that while Jack never chewed my shoes like the puppy does, Jack was a garbage pale and countertop surfing thief.
I suppose it is the full circle to care for a dog to the very end and then to start again with a puppy that also need 24/7 attention and training.
So we lived and loved again after cancer. It took a while, but we made it back. Thanks for being there when we needed to know all there was to know about cancer and tripawds.
Thank you for sharing your return & about Oliver. Its great to hear about people recovering and the trip back
Hugs

Hello Kate, and thank you from the bottom of my heart for bringing happy news to us; it's been a rough time here. I just lost my old lady, Roxie, Tuesday to lung mets after only 6 months post-amp; there are a lot of new faces at the Bridge these days!
Your boy Jack was so handsome(I'm guessing your avatar is Jack), and I hope your memories of him bring you comfort and laughter. And congratulations on opening your home and hearts to your new boy, Oliver. Sounds like a serious name to fit his personality. I've always been a GSD person so I gravitate to them. Roxie was supposed to be a white GSD; and, although she probably had some in her, she was mostly Samoyed; a first for us, and a joy for the entire too-short time we had with her.
I lost my heart dog, Spirit Logan, a 14 year-old lifelong-cranky GSD, 2 years ago this month. 3 months later, after daily badgering by my retired and very lonely husband, we adopted a 23-month old GSD dropout ("career change" was the PC description) from the guide dog training school where I used to volunteer, and where I'd gotten Logan and later, his sis M.E. Lou (who passed exactly 6 months before Logan - 2011 sucked). We renamed the new boy Smokey. He now has about 9 more names that have come as his personality revealed itself to us. I was worried about comparing him with Logan, but he is sable gray while Logan was black & tan. He is terminally goofy while Logan was an old soul at 8 weeks. He doesn't have the confidence to impose himself on the toad who lives by the back deck; Logan tried to hump any end of any dog he ever met. Smokey turns himself inside-out to please and Logan was the Center-of-the-Universe-I'll "come" when I'm finished what I'm doing...maybe" dog. And I celebrate the way Smokey has wrapped his skinny goober self around my heart when I needed it most. He was a good little brother to Princess Roxie and to the 4 kitties who share our world.
As Oliver grows you'll see his own special self grow; I wish you all a great, long, and happy future together, with Jack to whisper in his ear and teach him a thing or two...like how to raid the garbage can without getting the lid stuck on your head...many happy times to you all!

Oliver, if I may hijacknyour post just a secondmto tell LIZ and HRH Roxie Roo Roooo that, evenin their deep grief, that wohderful sick humor comes shining through...a true dysfunctional tripawd sense of humor.....love it! So glad you are bringing love and life back into your mom and dad's hearts.

Happy Hannah had a glorious additional bonus time of over one yr & two months after amp for osteo! She made me laugh everyday! Joined April's Angels after send off meal of steak, ice cream, M&Ms & deer poop!
Yay, congratulations on Oliver! I can't wait to see some photos, here's a post about adding images to the Forums.
I'm so happy to hear that you've found a dog you can adore and love and share your life with. For many people it just takes time, my folks were the exact same way after I left. In fact, they can totally relate to your feelings about Saint Jack...they call me "Saint Jerry"! My follow-up act, Wyatt Ray , is quite the opposite of me and really makes them nuts sometimes, but they always try their best to remember that all dogs are different and even crazy Wyatt has lessons to teach them.
We're glad you came back to share Oliver's story, it really does give people who are in mourning (of which, sadly, we unfortunately have many right now, as there's been a lot of losses here), hope that some day life will be bright again and a new dog can join the pack.
Many hugs coming your and Oliver's way!
