Murphy was never bothered by fireworks or thunderstorms. Gus didn't like them, but was tolerant. Enter Sir Oliver.
Ollie went into his Thundershirt early in the evening. He paced a LOT. We took the TV from the upstairs and set it up in our bedroom with the sound up loud. The booms could still be heard and he was not happy. I had frozen some peanut butter and cookies in a Kong, and that kept him a bit distracted for a little while. He still left it when the loudest booms went off, and kept trying to get Garry to let him on the bed. Once he got up there, he didn't want to stay. After a while, though, with both of us totally ignoring him, he started to settle a bit. He would walk around, then go into the bathroom and sleep a bit and repeat the sequence. We kept telling ourselves that by giving him special attention, we were reinforcing his behavior, and even though it was hard not to "poor puppy" him, it did work.
Next Independence Day, however, we will be somewhere that they don't allow fireworks.
Kathi and the Turbotail April Angel...and the Labradork
Murphy is a five year old Lab/Chessie cross. He was hit by a car on 10/29/12 and became a Tripawd on 11/24/12. On 2/5/13, he had a total hip replacement on his remaining back leg. He has absolutely no idea that he has only three legs!
UPDATE: Murphy lived his life to the fullest, right up until an aggressive bone lesion took him across the Rainbow Bridge on April 9, 2015 and he gained his membership in the April Angels. Run free, my love. You deserve it!
