Oh I'm sorry you ended up there but glad she didn't have to stay overnight. Here's to being a bad-a$$!
A cankle situation! You crack me up. You mean swelling?
Yup! Some slight swelling from either lack of use (you know how when you sit a long time and fluid builds up?) or something else. She is slightly arthritic in that leg so that's probably why she doesn't use it much. But she will use it to stand on - no big deal. She's not painful - it's just lame. The vet actually called it similar to a cankle so therefore .. that's what I am calling it! 🙂

Our story: Broke rear leg in June 2013 - non-conclusive results for cancer so leg was plated and pinned. Enlarged spleen in September 2013 and had it removed and was diagnosed with Hemangiosarcoma and started chemotherapy. Became a Tripawd January 8th, 2014 and definitive Hemangiosarcoma diagnosis. Three major surgeries in 7 months and Shelby took them all like a champ only to lose her battle to cancer in her brain. We had 8 amazing extra months together and no regrets. #shelbystrong #loveofmylife
Look at how happy she is! Sorry she had such a crappy chemo But she's so lucky to have you as her mommy Enjoy that hot weather and send some to Ohio! 🙂
Cody and Family
Cody is our 7 year old Australian Heeler mix boy. Diagnosed on 2/20/14 and became a tripawd 2/21/14! We chose a homeopathic approach and he is being treated by Dr. Loops our of NC.
Ah OK. Yeah I would try massage to see if that helps.

Well crap... Shelby's remaining hind leg does appear to be swollen. I don't know why they tell me these things .. now I fixate on it. I am supposed to massage it from the toes up to her hip and there does appear to be some swelling. And when I was massaging it, feels like there is a fluid sack in there (or something that move around - but creepy). But then again, I didn't notice it yesterday and now I think she's hopping slower. I admittedly baby her too much (carrying her when she appears tired, up and down the stairs...). I thought rear tripawds were supposed to do better going UP the stairs but she does better going down and refuses to go up. 🙁
I am hoping it is fluid from lack of use and I'll trying to make her walk more. It isn't painful - which is good news. I massaged it for a full 5 minutes and she didn't fight me or flinch. I was so focused on massaging her front legs that I forgot about the rear one.
But on the plus side - she did eat 1/2 cup of ground sirloin tonight w/some gluten free pasta and got her meds in her. We upped her anti-nausea pills and are taking her OFF the iron for now to see if we can add it back when she gets back to normal. She will eat "some" cookies (I got her new ones). But that she ate most of her dinner is good. No more dripping for her mouth... snoozy time but snuggles too. Oh and she had really runny poo when I got home from work (poor girl - I know she was holding it in) but all better now. Put her back on the flagyl till we get over the hump! Fingers crossed!

Oh, I hope she is feeling better! Ty uses his back end funny when his stomach is hurting. Maybe that is what is going on. The drooling sounds like nausea also. Did they give you Cerinia to give at home? They had sent home a few pills for Ty after his chemo. He is still being picky. I like the gluten free pasta idea, I may try it. Love, love, love the beach pics. Have to admit it, I am a bit jealous as I am still trying to clear the snow off my back deck
TY GUY, Best Black Lab ever! Diagnosed and had amp in January, 2014. Kicked MRSA's butt. Earned his angel wings on April 16, 2014. Run Free my boy and don't forget a shoe. Ty is a proud member of the " April Angels". Ty sent us Daryl, a Tripawd rescue in Sept. of 2016. Daryl is 5 +or -. We are also Pawrents to Chandler, a Border Collie mix who is 15 and 1/2, Lucy, a Corgi who is 7, 2 minis, 2 horses, and a feisty cat named Zoe. Zoe had a non skeletal Osteosarcoma removed in July 2015. No Chemo, she was at least 16. She is going strong although she is now completely blind. She is now close to 20 and her hobbies are eating and sleeping in front of her personal heater.
Sorry, somehow I missed your last post where you had already answered the ?s I asked. Do you mind me asking, why they give her Flagyl. I saw that on med list when Ty was in hospital. I made suggestion that maybe he had a fungal infection, but was told testing for that is expensive. My thought, just treat it, oh well. What do I know. So much sounds similar to Ty though and I am convinced that his tummy just feels like crap. Loose poop, burping and that funny walk. Just like he hops but his back legs work like.a little old man's. Also, did she have an IV? Do they do fluids.? Ty's leg was swollen a few days after his IV. He also had this storage pocket of fluid on his amp shoulder. It too went down. Just a thought.

Hey Shelby I'm glad you ate that yummy meal!
Yup, leg swelling often happens after an IV is inserted into that limb. Has Shelby had one there recently?

Shelby suffers from occasional colitis from her chemo treatments (she's been on chemo since Sept) so that is why they put her on Flagyl. They said that stuff really messes w/their GI tract. So that helps her (and so does the probiotic).
As far as an IV in her leg... unless they used her rear leg for her chemo treatment, she has not had an IV in it lately. I guess it's possible - I didn't ask which leg they use but that seems to make sense. She isn't limping (more than usual) and that leg is slightly arthritic but otherwise she seems fine. She didn't poop this a.m. so I am expecting a sh!tstorm when I get home - she had THREE chances this a.m. too but didn't have to go. But she did eat some cookies this a.m., some deli meat and 1 slice of banana. She seemed alert, happy and normal but I've got her on some extra anti-nausea medicine. I think it was just a reaction to the iron and the chemo.

Yes, we had cerenia for the few days post-chemo at home. I don't eat carbs/gluten so that was all I had in the house and she loved it! I got her some white rice to make for her tonight. It seems like we eat the same thing for about a week and she's over it. Brat! But I love her. And I would trade a bit of cool for this extreme heat we are having!!! But the beach life is great!

Well thankfully NO poop in my house but no poop on our walk either! I guess her explosive poop last night cleaned her out so her vet has recommended she stay on the Flagyl a few more days. She seemed like she wanted to poop but either couldn't find the right spot or it was uncomfortable for her to squat (yet she peed just fine - same position).
But she ate well tonight. Two servings. At this point, even w/our dog cookbook I don't know how much to feed her. She got probably 3/4 cup of ground sirloin and 3/4 cup of white rice. She "seems" better but still a bit off. I am glad this didn't happen w/our first few chemos. Would have scared me off chemo!!! I hope she feels better in a couple more days. I am keeping her on the anti-nausea too but she's also two days OFF iron so I think that might be the culprit. Sigh. But she's back to begging which always makes me happy to see!
