Hi all,
We're a long way off from bringing home a new pup. We're still mourning Jackson and miss him something awful (but that's a topic for a different forum). It's been a dream of my husband's to own 2 dogs, specifically labs, at the same time. I know we'll go back to owning rescues so in the meantime while we own labs, I'll pick a rescue organization and donate monthly! There, conscience solved.
It'd be easiest for us to get 2 puppies from the same litter and begin our journey. But, we've read some stories about folks raising 2 sibling puppies. The concern, I guess, is that they'll continue to bond to each other rather than to us. Yes, we want everyone to love each other, but if the pups end up always wanting to be together rather than with us on the couch or comfortable on 2 leashes, etc., that's a vision we'd rather not realize.
Does anyone here have an opinion, a story, some knowledge to share about doing this? Should we get 2 sibling puppies? Yes? No? Why? We're not afraid of work! But we'd like some guidance and ideas, please.
Thanks,
Katy, with my Jackson forever in my heart
ACL tear in right hind leg 12/5/12 and scheduled ACL repair surgery 12/21/12. Pre-op xrays revealed osteosarcoma. Amputation 12/28/12. Chemo (carboplatin) started Jan 10, 2013 and ended on April 5, for a total of 5 doses. He handled carbo like a champ! No side effects. We started metronomic therapy at his third chemo and have been also doing some holistic treatments. He's a lively, playful 10 year old huskie-boarder collie and a very proud member of the Winter Warriors! Our love. Our funny little guy!

Hi Katy,
First I need to say that I have never had a dog, I love dogs and am an avid observer of dogs and their behaviour. I follow an organization that breeds and trains great danes as mobility dogs. All of this in on a number of live cameras 24 hours a day. After being in their litter when they are old enough they start splitting the dogs up in pairs and train them individually. Some of the dogs won't become service dogs and may become therapy dogs and family pets. Even when two were placed in a home they both bonded with the woman they live with. She already had another dog and then brought in a third great dane and all of them get along great. They have many more situations where the danes are mother/child or step-siblings or distant cousins.
I think in all of the situations where the dogs are being raised and trained they had done individual work with them and also give them time to interact with non-family who may be younger and older.
Perhaps you and your husband could each take a dog for alone time? Then when they get together again they'll have great stories to tell!
I think it's fabulous that you are considering having two labs. I'm especially fond of them. I vote for one black and one yellow. Oh, perhaps you could add in a brown one?
A huge thank you for continuing to support rescue organizations.

Well, I have Jazz & Snickers both litter mates. They love each other but have bonded with me & the family. Two dogs give them someone to play with. I work with both of my girls they both will sleep with me and now that they are getting bigger (not enough room in the bed all the time) Jazz will sleep out especially with them having their surgeries spays & gastropexy they had to be apart for 14 days to be quiet then my vet wanted another 2 weeks to make sure everything was healed. Today was the 1st time playing together in about a month.
My first 2 Rotties Doc & Shadow were about 6 months apart and Bosch & Sassy were about 3 months apart. Never had any bonding problems with the family.
You will do great with 2 dogs 🙂 of course when you are ready.
Hugs
Michelle & Angel Sassy
