Does anyone here in the forums have a pressure cooker?
I am thinking getting one and using it to cook whole chickens for Riley - my mom used to have one when we were kids and it would pretty much disegrate anything you put in it - (my mom felt everything needed to be thoroughly cooked)
any thoughts??
That's funny, I just heard my Mom saying she was going to start yard sailing and thrift store shoppin to look for one. She can't cook anything up here in Colorado (we're at 8500' elevation!), and she heard a pressure cooker will let her make beanz. But she's never had one before and is curious about them too.

I have one and used to use it for pinto beans when I was in a hurry. But that was years ago.
Once I discovered the crock pot, I never went back to the pressure cooker. If you cook something in a crock pot long enough, it will disengrate everything. The reason I like crock pots is because you don't have to worry and can cook something overnight.
I have to be honest, pressure cookers are tricky and can be a bit dangerous. If you do buy a used one, the seal may be cracked or worn out and will need to be replaced. With pressure cookers you really have to monitor it. I remember my mom had a lid pop off when we were kids and it was a like bomb in the kitchen!

I take it getting Kurts grandmothers out of storage probably wouldn't be a good idea then? Last thing I need is to blow a hole thru my kitchen ceiling.
My mom used to cook chickens and trout (we lived next to a fish farm) for the dogs and when she took the fish out - they bones were completely gone.....she also used the pot for melting chocolate when she made bon bons (the thick walls kept the chocolate from scorching).
I looked at them this morning on the internet and they have the stovetop type and another one that plugs into the wall - it can be a pressure cooker, rice cooker or crockpot....Looked rather interesting.....
Our moms were brave! Anything for a good meal!
My mom used to "can" stuff for entertainment! Sheesh!
Actually, my pressure cooker is from my mom and it's pretty old. I haven't used it in years and the seal may be dried out now but you can look at Kurt's grandmother's cooker and see if the seal is okay.
Crockpots are cheap and if you've never used one, you'll love it!

Daisy says: Mom has a pressure cooker and she cooks chicken for me every week! YUM! I LOVE CHICKEN!
Seriously- I love my stovetop pressure cooker. The new stove top ones have a safety valve (kinda of like a teapot whistle). The safety will vent the steam before it explodes. Mine will hold 8 chicken breasts or 1 whole chicken. Done in about 30 min. Throw in a few wholes carrots, a couple sticks of celery and keep a few pieces of chicken for yourself, shred the chicken into the broth, add flour, make some biscuits and mmmmm chicken and biscuits in about 40 minutes.

We had someone give us a crockpot last year and Mom just started using it this week now that we're back in Colorado. So far she's managed to make two meals, one that she called "Gray Mush" and another that she called "Raw Lentils." She's about to chuck that crock pot.
A bomb in the kitchen? My dad does that everytime he cooks!

Hey! some of us like Grey Mush! Mmmmmmmm!
Oh, don't toss it just yet! Once you get the timing down, you'll love it!
I love cooked lentils in the crock - 4-6 hours. I put diced tomatoes, bell pepper, onions and bacon in (the last 2 hours).
It's really good for pintos beans especially if you throw them in the morning and they should be ready at dinner. I like to overcook my pintos so they'll get really soft - 8-10 hours. I actually take a mixer to my pintos so they'll be soupy. (I'm a onion and bacon person with pintos and black beans)
But I wouldn't listen to me since I hardly ever cook now!
Good to know there are safe pressure cookers now! Lucky you Daisy! Your mom is more experienced in the kitchen!

I thought I was the only person who knew how to make "Gray Mush" that not even the dog would eat - LOL
I have a crockpot and I used to use it all the time - now it collects dust - and I honestly never thought of putting a
chicken in there for Riley....call me slow ok
Can a pressure cooker cook the chicken bones on a whole chicken until they are soft?
A thought just occured to me...can I even feed Riley disinegrated chicken bones???

Pawsonally my Mom says she wouldn't feed any cooked chicken bones, even if they looked disintegrated. They turn to shards when cooked, so even when they're disintegrated they've gotta have some of those shards left somewhere dontcha think? It's just too scary.
Now raw chicken bones....yum!

We have a pretty old pressure cooker and a really old pressure cooker and we can always buy seals online. Someone told me it's a safety thing and they have to keep selling them. As far as blowing up, you do have to make sure the vent hole isn't clogged before you start.
