I checked with Royal Caribbean about group rates for a cruise, the required minimum is 8 rooms. I then asked about using reward programs from credit cards, she told me you cannot use them when booking directly with them as a group, at least if you have to use a travel agent to redeem rewards. Our program requires us to use a travel agent connected with the card company to redeem points for a cruise, I might be wrong, but I would assume most card reward programs work the same way. My thinking is we would be better off deciding on when works best for the majority of people, picking a particular cruise, then each of us would make their own reservation for that cruise and if you do have some type of rewards you want to apply you can do it so it works best for you, whether it be air miles, cruise points, etc. Not saying it would have to be Royal Caribbean, they were just the ones I talked to. I only have experience with them and Holland America, which known to have an older crowd, but I will say their ships are spotless and food is fantastic, entertainment ok. My thoughts would be if it was to be Jan-April, warm destinations would be attractive, June through September, I have heard Alaska is gorgeous. I have noticed the trend is more mega ships, I have never been on one so I can't say what it is like, but they are cramming alot more people on just another 150ft or so of ship with more decks, so if large numbers aren't your liking, another thing to consider. Our ships usually had around 1900, Holland also promotes larger room, less people and have found that true and nice. Big ships I think are usually around 4300. If you don't lke to fly, I think most terminals have a place to park for the duration of the cruise, usually around $10/ day. Take if from here!!!

Keep working it buddy!
I organized a group trip once on Carnival for advertising clients when I was in advertising. It was the 7 day trip to Cabo and Puerto Vallerta. I think it was a 10% discount with 10 people but honestly I don't remember. The ship was nothing to brag about. And we upgraded to a suite but it wasn't all that great other than it had a king size bed in a tiny room and it had a tiny balcony.

While this sounds like a great idea, Mom and Dad will once more be watching the humpback whales in Maui for two weeks at the start of March. As spirits, Allie and I were able to tag along last year. Hopefully, we will not have a repeat of the tsunami warning.

PS: You could always get together anytime in June at Yellowstone. Mom and Dad will be doing their June in Yellowstone and watching geysers. That is if Chloe's separation anxiety will allow Dad to leave the 5th wheel. Anyone interested can get a personal tour of the geysers. You can read about our last day there last year on a previous post where we toasted all the tripawds with a wine that has special meaning to Jim and Rene. Tripawd Toast with Three Legged Red
Maybe we'll go to Maui instead..........with you!!! What's the dates?

Hi Dan,
I wanted to thank you for looking into the cruise. I have been banned from the site for a few days (censorship......what' the country coming too ) and didn't get a chance to reply to your post. The Hess' are in for a cruise or whatever else is planned as long as the dates work out. Did I hear someone mention getting sea sick...........nothing that a few drinks and a scopolamine-patch and Bonine won't fix! Come on Rene, I know an excuse when I hear one

We won't be hearing from Rene (aka: Jerry) until late tomorrow at the earliest as she is off on an 80 mile charity bike ride. As far as a cruise goes, I'll volunteer to stay ashore and watch all the dogs! Unless it's an Alaskan cruise, and we can bring them.

Yea! You can't get sick on a big boat unless you get that Noro virus. Big ships are fun! It's especially fun during a storm! I had so much fun (by myself) going to the front of ship late one night, watching lightening, seeing the big waves and the rain! That was a blast!
Plus, ships are romantic and we all know how romantic Jim and you are!

Okay, this is who has said that they would be up for a cruise if the dates work out. (It's a given that our pups come first of course)

There must be more folks than this that would be up for a cruise????????? We should really try and get together sometime. I know timing is an issue but it sure would be nice if we could work something out. It doesn't have to be a cruise. The Hess' are flexible.

It is a very difficult thing to plan ahead with what we face. It is so hard to look two days out much less a few months. We stick really close to home, but can sometime get out for a short outing - not nearly what we did before meeting this horrible disease. In Trouble's younger years it was nothing to kennel her for a couple of weeks while we visited Alaska. Now neither of us would consider a trip for that length of time.
I'm hoping we can get something together, a cruise or even something else, but understand timing is everything. As I said early on, this time next year may be better for us than trying to do something in the spring. Finishing the house is at the top of our list for the next few months. That doesn't mean plans shouldn't be made. If we can go, we will. If not, we'll hope for a repeat trip next year. I would love to see our group do an annual outing.

I'm still in!
Can I put my vote in for summer months? A cruise is fun just because everything is there and no worries about planning stuff. Prepare to gain 10lbs though.
Shanna, do you have a co-worker that wants to house sit? Usually just asking around, there is someone that likes to house sit dogs. My mom is always happy to come out here and sit with the dogs which is why I get to go to LA in December.

Oh, I'm good kenneling her (them) for a few days. I could not bring a sitter in with Duke, he has too many house/yard guarding issues we are still working on. I'd be afraid he wouldn't let them in if they had to leave for a bit. He's great outside of his territory. And I totally trust that Trouble gets the best care. I kennel them at the vet's,
and they allow me to bring a rug for her run so she isn't on bare
concrete.
I'm just waiting to see how the timing plays out and where we are with our ongoing project. I'm not out yet, just sitting on the fence.
Oh, and just for the record. We have actually tried to book two different cruises - both casino sponsored freebee's. The first one was cancelled when Katrina hit New Orleans and they used the ship for housing, and I can't remember why the second one didn't work out, something equally odd. I may be bad luck!

Boy, I thought maybe interest had died in this idea, got back into town and see several posts. I too like the idea once on the ship no worries about anything. I can see where timing will be an issue, Feb-Mar will probably work best for us unless I get a crystal ball and can see when I will be making hay and planting, but I will say an Alaskan cruise has been something we would like to do, which would be later in the year. The other thing is our daughter wants to have a Sept. wedding and wants to have it here, so it sounds like we will have to be working on getting this place ready for a wedding this summer also, so I think my time for a cruise will be sort of narrow, but I too would like to get something together even if it isn't a cruise
