Tazzie, thanks so much for the response.

The Vet said it was bronchopneumonia, so the lung involvment is minimal. Or at least was minimal...

I don't know if the antibiotics are working at all. Just based on her not responding to them. SHe shouldn't still be running a 103.3 fever a week after being on them should she?

I have been using the humidifier on her. For how long at a time and how many times a day? I had someone tell me to put 5 oz of cheap vodka in the humidfier along with the water. I figured it was worth a shot, although I'm not sure what the purpose is.

I stopped using the cough suppressant for the reason you mentioned.

Lung worms? Yuck! I know that she is HW+ , are lung worms related to that? And how would you know whether she had them or not?

Is weakness like I've mentioned something that can come along with pneumonia and fever?

Thanks again. It feels better being able to talk to someone about it. I'm going a little crazy having to wait another 2 hours to get her to the vet.

Let us know!

You may already know but some don't, Tazziedog is a vet, so she'd know for sure!

I'm not sure Clavamox was around at that time when Comet had it.  But that's what Cosmo got.

In most cases the fever should break within a few days of starting the antibiotic.  I don't know about the vodka thing, unless it is supposed to mimic Vick's vapor therapy.  I would do the steam therapy 2-3 times daily for 20-30 minutes at a time.

She could be slow to recover due to the heartworm infection.  Did your vet say when they were going to try and treat that?  Lungworms are contagious but rare and can sometimes be diagnosed via a fecal sample.

Dang

Sorry to hear Maddie Mae isnt feeling well...poor girl!

Bud picked up some kind of lung infection during his hospital stay and he was VERY low energy!...wouldnt even rise to get a drink, I was so worried. It took him about 3 days on the antibiotics before he began to perk up!

Get better Maddie!

Maddie Mae is fine, it's Jasper my foster dog.

Update on Jasper:

By the time I got home to take her to the vet she was exhibiting signs of distemper. Trembling, couldn't stand well and the thing with the mouth that makes it look likes she's chewing gum.

The vet sent me home with her and treated the initial symptoms with more antibiotics and a bronchial dilator.

During the night she started having seizures. really bad one's. When she came out of the seizure it's like she couldn't see or hear me and there was no consoling her. She was pacing the crate and running into the sides of it and whining. By the time I took her downstairs to try and potty, she couldn't walk.

I took her in 1st thing this morning and called the Rescue to see what was best to do. The vet and Rescue agreed that her suffering needed to end. Once they go that far they rarely come back from it. It breaks my heart. She was such a sweet sweet girl and would have made anyone an awesome companion, but won't have the chance now….

I did have some calm time with her while we sat outside the vets office waiting for it to open. I laid her on the tailgate and she rested very peacefully in my arms and even gave strechted her head up and gave me one little kiss on the chin.

Thanks for everyones responses and help.

I am very sorry to hear about Jasper.  That does sound like distemper so it makes sense that she wasn't responding to the meds.  It was nice of you to give her a chance, and I'm glad that you had some quality time with her before she passed.

Perhaps if we had treated more aggressively sooner, she might have had a chance. But we were thinking it was just Kennel Cough. She never had diarrhea, vomiting or yucky discharge. Just yesterday when I got home she had a little around her nose, but that was it. It's like all of the major tell tell signs hit all at the same time and very quickly she went downhill.

Thanks for everything.

Oh Kelly!

I can't even hold back the tears!  This just breaks my heart!

I'm so sorry and I'm so sorry I gave you hope it was going to be okay.  I really in my heart believed it would have been based on experience.  I'm so, so very sorry.

There is peace knowing that Jasper was shown a tremendous amount of love in her short little life  by you.  It was obvious you cared deeply and did everything right by her.

I just so very, very sorry.

Awww!  What a sweetie.  Now, I can't stop crying.  She'll have a little piece of my heart now.   If only we'd had known she was a very sick little girl but she was being so brave.

We may not can save them all, but a lot of love in a little time is better than none at all.
