I recently learned of a dog who died from ingesting a commonly used ointment for psoriasis. The topical is Dovonex which contains calcipotriol, which is a derivative of vitamin D. I use this ointment and did not know how toxic it is for cats and dogs.

I had a cat, Rocky, who loved the taste of this ointment and would try to lick it off me. I'd even wake up in the middle of the night with him licking my elbows. Of course I made him stop but I had no idea that this could affect his kidneys. He eventually died from kidney failure. I wonder now if it was from the Dovonex.

It turns out that some cats and dogs love the taste. I read of a case where a dog got the empty tube from the garbage can and died within days.

I talked to my vet about this today and he said that he just recently attended a toxicity conference and learned of this product which is way worse than rat poison. He said they have an antidote for rat poison but nothing for Dovonex.

I know about toxic foods and plants and to keep pills away from our pets but had not ever thought about my ointment, although I keep it in a drawer. I'm now researching this website to find all the potential poisons in my house:

Kathi and the Turbotail April Angel...and the Labradork

Murphy is a five year old Lab/Chessie cross. He was hit by a car on 10/29/12 and became a Tripawd on 11/24/12. On 2/5/13, he had a total hip replacement on his remaining back leg. He has absolutely no idea that he has only three legs!

UPDATE: Murphy lived his life to the fullest, right up until an aggressive bone lesion took him across the Rainbow Bridge on April 9, 2015 and he gained his membership in the April Angels. Run free, my love. You deserve it!

Kerren and Kathi,

As a dog and cat mom who is constantly worried about my fur-kids getting into something that will hurt them, thanks for sharing this info..... I never keep anything in my house that would really harm them such as rat poison or such, but simple things like what happened to Sally's Frankie, and my own Lab several years ago that got into a bottle of Tylenol, you really have to stay on your toes, and remember that even if something won't harm us, it definitely can harm our pets.

Thanks again 🙂

Thanks for sharing this.  I don't wear lotions on my arms or legs anymore because Snickers wakes me up licking my legs.  I decided I would rather be safe than sorry so the only thing I use is the goats milk soap that Chris (Franklin) makes or that Aidan (Dakota's boy) makes all natural stuff.

I am always watching and checking out things that could hurt my babies

Thank you again

I love this community! Thank you so much for sharing this info, it's so important for us to know about. Honestly, I never gave a second thought to all the licking that Jerry used to do....the furniture, us, whatever. He was always licking weird surfaces, and probably licking weird chemicals that had a good taste, who knows. It's good to be aware that what we consider benign could be toxic to our beloved animals. Thank you!

Oh wow... thank you so much for sharing. This is great info. Thankfully... Jasper only likes to shred kleenix, bills and other paper products but this is great to know and share!

Our story: Broke rear leg in June 2013 - non-conclusive results for cancer so leg was plated and pinned. Enlarged spleen in September 2013 and had it removed and was diagnosed with Hemangiosarcoma and started chemotherapy. Became a Tripawd January 8th, 2014 and definitive Hemangiosarcoma diagnosis. Three major surgeries in 7 months and Shelby took them all like a champ only to lose her battle to cancer in her brain. We had 8 amazing extra months together and no regrets. #shelbystrong #loveofmylife
