I j justfound out that Chucks brother was diagnosed with osteosarcoma today. That makes this the third sibling to have to battle this disease. Their sister passed away from it just weeks after chuck was diagnosed. My question is..does anyone have any ideas Of how to notify any blood relatives of the mother and father so that they won't be bred? they were AKC certifiedbut the breeder himself has since passed away. I just want to do my part to make sure that this disease is Not Passed onto any more dogs from this genetic background. 3 dogs from the same mother all battle this disease within a year seems like more than just a coincidence to me and I'm heartbroken that chucks brother haS to nowto go through this too. Their birthday is next week. it's just not fair
Lori,
I don't know if AKC would pass the info on or give out the owners names & stuff but each litter has a certain number registered to it. Maybe worth a shot? Call & explain the circumstance?

Hi Lori
I really don't know if the AKC would be able to give you that information but there is definitely a strong genetic link to osteosarcoma in this litter - 3 pups and very young too!
I didn't find you language offensive at all - quite mild considering the situation
Hugs to you and Betsy,

Lori,
Boy do I know how you feel. When Maggie was diagnosed with cancer I had heard her father died of it too. So I called the owner and sure enough he also got it at age 5. They unfortunately didn't amputate and did some black potion thing, it sounded awful. The dogs weren't AKC but I always worried about her litter. The owners moved to the East coast with the mother to the pups. But I was thinking the Dad was the carrier?? And he only had one litter- Maggie's. So I'm hoping that was the end of that OSA line. But good luck finding out. It is heartbreaking thinking any new dog owners have to go through this. I'm not a big fan of the AKC so I wouldn't be surprised if they were not helpful in trying to find any relatives but I hope they do.

AKC just means pure bred. Unfortunately it doesn't mean "well bred". So many people think because an animal has AKC papers that that it must be a healthy animal. Not true. I think it's great that you are trying to find the other dogs. Try using the registration numbers of the dogs on the AKC website. You could also try their numbers on the OFA website. offa.org When good breeders get hips, hearts and eye certs done they register them on OFA and their litters and numbers are linked. Worth a try?
Darnnit! It sjre does suck to see Chuck's brother deal with this. If I recall, Chuck's brother was st tne vet the day he crossed over.
I know St. Chuck will be watching over his brother and helpng him wherever this journeh takes him. I have no answers as far as hw toproceed t make sjre no more breedk g is dong. C.LEARLY there is so ething genetic going on.
I wo der if maybe so eone at The Morris Fondatiin could guide you in the right direction. PLUS, I think this could be very valueable i formation in their research. Rene could certainly make the connection for you lf so eo e there.
Maybe Chuck's brother's family would join Tripawds so we can help support them.
Yo are very' very special Lori! We love you!

Yah sally .. This is the brother that was in the next room as we said goodbye to chuck his family was so supportive and there for us as we went through our battle .. It's just not fair. I'd do anything I can do that would help anyone learn anything about this disease If I can.my heart ..oy. It's just not fair. They are 5 years old. Too young
Wow Lori I'm so sad to hear this!
I hope there's something that can be done to let people know about the cancer in that litter(s) but I honestly don't know what. I would start by asking the Saint's Owner's Group maybe if there is such a thing? I don't know a lot about the AKC. What about asking Bart the Vizsla's Mom Darcy if she has any ideas? She has a lot of ins with the AKC these days (I'm guessing). Her username here is 'Bartsmom,' just PM her.
My heart goes out to them, that's just awful.
