Hi all! What a wonderful resource for information and support. Thank you for all of the great advice I have already found!
I work at a Humane Association in Wisconsin and have been fostering a Chihuahua mix named Papi who came to us from a grossly overpopulated shelter in the Southern US. He badly broke both bones in his left forelimb and because we are completely donation/sponsorship-funded the major orthopedic surgery that could possibly fix it was thousands out of our budget. Our amazing veterinarians set and casted it, changing it weekly for five weeks and I cared for him 24/7. Unfortunately neither bone healed at all and last week his leg was amputated...making him a Trihuahua. He and I have bonded more than I could have ever expected (I'm a big dog girl, having a Pit mix who alerts me to my epileptic seizures, a Mastiff before that, and other large breeds before her...), and as of today Papi is officially a member of my family 🙂
Papi is an incredible guy who brings smiles and laughter to people everywhere we go. Each week after his cast changes I decorated them with gems and artwork, for which he sat perfectly calmly for hours while I worked. He ate up the attention as I carried him around in a sling with his blinged-out cast sticking out, looking like a rockstar hanging a tattooed arm out the window of his car. All of the visitors to the shelter spent time with him, the kids all loved to get his kisses and learn about his injury, and he taught them about the amazing things that our shelter does for animals in need.
Our next step is going through our shelter's Therapy Dog Certification Program so that Papi can go visit people with traumatic injuries and amputations at childrens hospitals, veterans homes, rehabilitation centers, etc.
It's been a week since his surgery and becoming a Trihuahua and he's doing fantastic! He gets around great, even walking on TWO legs on the same side of his body when one of his feet got too cold when he went out to go potty in the subzero Wisconsin weather. Animals are incredible.
Anyway, the little man would never admit to it, but he's...fancy. And a bit on the vain side. I've never had a dog that had to wear clothes...like I said I'm a big dog girl. But in this below zero weather, a half shaved ten pound dog with a flair for fashion has me searching for options. He is not very happy about the cold breeze that blows in through the empty arm hole of his shirts/jackets, and he feels foolish as he hops down the halls of the shelter with the empty sleeve flapping up and down like a lifeless chicken wing. Like I said, he's a bit vain. Plus, they tend to spin around on him. Do you know of any places that make sweaters, shirts, etc for front leg tripawds? I've searched and searched to no avail.
Thanks so much!!
Reb
Hi Reb! What a wonderful, wonderful story. It sounds like he's found a great home with you- what a lucky guy!
My Jack is a front amputee and I bought her a Ruffwear jacket (the Cloud Chaser, though the Climate Chaser is quite nice, too) and simply sewed up one leg. You could trim the leg hole of the shirts he already owns so they're short and then just stitch along the edge. But, I'd also recommend Ruffwear's products- they've held up well and I like how slim the jackets are cut. I've never had problems with it sliding around.
Oh gosh, wonderful story indeed!! No matter how cold the temperatures outside, this story warms my heart!
Yeah, we so many dogs end up with amputation when "corrective" surgery" fails. And as you've already seen, dogs seem to recovery pretty darn quickly without that bum leg!
I also have been owned by mostly big dogs. They just don't seem to jave the same "flair for fashion " that the little guys do!!
I hope Alison sees this. She is our resident fashion expert! Jasper Lilly and Shelby are the best dressed dogs in California!
Welcome to the family! Cannot wait to see pictures!!!
Hugs!

Oh my gosh what a story! I love your and Papi's style! Welcome welcome, so happy to have you here. Where in WI are you? We have quite the Tripawd contingency there, I think a pawty is in order this spring!
We would LOVE to see photos! Got any? Here's how to add images to the Forums.
Meanwhile about clothing. Yeah, we've talked to manufacturers about being more Tripawd-centric but the logistics of manufacturing clothing for both front or right, left or rear, Tripawds is daunting. So far nobody has met that challenge but we're always bugging them. Until that day, the best thing is to cut the flappy loose arm fabric and sew it up. I'm gonna bet you know what to do with a needle and thread right? Let's see your creation!
Hmm, maybe we should have a fashion show one of these days . . .

OMG !!! Papi the Trihuahua is the cutest name / breed EVER! I love that ... Trihuahua !!!! Hilarious!
Yes, as Sally said, I am mom to Jasper Lily now ( was and forever mom to Angel Shelby Lynne). We are a quadpawd though so all our coats work as is. I would also suggest sewing that one leg closed. I am not good w/a needle and thread but I am sure more can better handle that than me!
What a great rescue story .... Papi is one lucky little dude!!!
More photos please!

Our story: Broke rear leg in June 2013 - non-conclusive results for cancer so leg was plated and pinned. Enlarged spleen in September 2013 and had it removed and was diagnosed with Hemangiosarcoma and started chemotherapy. Became a Tripawd January 8th, 2014 and definitive Hemangiosarcoma diagnosis. Three major surgeries in 7 months and Shelby took them all like a champ only to lose her battle to cancer in her brain. We had 8 amazing extra months together and no regrets. #shelbystrong #loveofmylife
Look out Vogue models, here comes Papi!
What a DOLL! Thanks for the smiles, you have a real cutie on your hands there.
