It's funny how certain times just hit ya.
Yesterday, Kona would have turned 11yrs.
She's been gone a year and 4 months, and the it's amazing how much her presence is missed in our lives.
Granted, we will always miss our kids lost, but, wow, with Kona, as those of you who remember her, was a HUGE and NOT to be IGNORED presence. Everyday, it seems, there are things that happen or don't that we feel that void especially.
Ahh, just wanted to share.
With a smile and some tears,
Denise
I have add that Cotton, who we've always referred to as "K2" because he absolutely adored/respected Kona (alpha) and always wanted to act like her.........he still does. That, yeah, makes us smile. However, he is Kona-light........a rookie compared to her hmmm, devilment. hahaa

I know what you mean about some times just hitting you -- I've had a few of those this past week myself, as Rio would have been celebrating #12. Hope she and Kona are getting into a little trouble together for their birthdays!

Hi Micki,
Thank you. Yes, I know you know all too well too. Happy Birthday to Rio !
I think that Rio and Kona must have crossed paths by now
Especially since we're in the same neck of the woods !

Hi Denise,
Happy birthday Kona. Maggie's birthday was in March, and although I am coming up on two years since she moved on there are still a few times that make me choke up a little.
For the most part it is smiles now when I think of Mag, but for many of us there will always be days and times that bite a little remembering our three legged soul mates.
Karen and Spirit Maggie
Awwwww. Nothing wrong with remembering with some tears as long as there are smiles! Kona was a grand dog! She is missed.
I forget her and Comet were so close in deaths. I remember it was before Comet.
I hope you are finding peace as time passes. I am - in a wierd way. I'm not used to not having one to fuss over! It's maddening at times, I admit.
Hugs to you on this important date.
Comet - 1999 to 2011
She departed us unexpectedly January 23, 2011 at the age of 12 1/2.
She was born with a deformed front leg and a tripawd all of her life.
Sadly, Kona died about the same time that Sammy had his leg amputated so I don't know much about her. However, it sounds like she and Sammy both had huge personalities — and that makes their absence so glaring. Sammy was a pill — full of life and just a little brattiness. I miss laughing at his antics and tearing up at his sweetness. I know many pawrents on this site feel just the same. Our furkids bring such joy and, eventually, such sadness to our lives.
So, today I wish Kona a belated happy birthday — I hope she is racing with the wind. And, to you, Denise, I wish you many happy, happy memories of your Kona.
Best,
Beth and Smilin' Sammy
Smilin' Sammy, March 16, 2004 – Dec. 5, 2011
Golden retriever, diagnosed with osteosarcoma in September 2010 — right front leg amputated November 2010. He fought valiantly to stay with us; but a second diagnosis of osteosarcoma, this time in his left front leg, was more than our golden warrior could overcome. He loved his pack — and everyone else he met.
We loved him even more.
Thanks for the pennies, Sammy. They helped.
Thank you all.
Karen, I agree that as time passes, I think we accept the loss more. That and all the time of diagnosis and battle to save our kids, blurs a bit. I have to admit and it's been tough, that it's taken a long time to remember a lot of Kona before all of THIS happened (diagnosis, surgery, battle, loss). I know that we were luckier than a lot of folks, that we had 9yrs before Kona's diagnosis...still, never enough, right?
Happily, we're remembering more and more of the good times BEFORE and we treasure that. Also, we find ourselves, in daily situations, going, "Oh yeah, if Kona was here, you know she'd be........."
She was so smart, sneeky, plotting, a devil girl, stubborn, did I mention, stubborn? (!!!)
In her first year, we had all these flowers blooming in our yard. She destroyed them all. Well, a very few skirted by, however, we couldn't just look at them and say, "wow, isn't that one beautiful?". Oh no, we had to do a quick sideways glance and then, while looking in the opposite direction say, "wow, did you see that one?" If she saw you making eye contact with a flower, grad and destroy.....completely....joyfully !!! Too funny
I miss my girl.
A one of a kind, devildog. heheeh

Scout: January 31, 2002 to November 7, 2011
Scout's diagnosis was "poorly differentiated sarcoma"; amputation 1/11/2011. Scout enjoyed 9 fantastic years on 4 legs and 9 glorious months on 3 legs. If love alone could have saved you…
Hoppy Birthday Kona! I know that you are still working your devilish charm from somewhere out there.
May you always remind your people that no matter how long it's been since you earned your wings, all those crazy stunts you pulled will never be forgotten! Hah!
xoxo

What's with the flowers? Sammy and his brother, Sosa, gleefully — and with full intention — rolled over every single day lily in a huge area EVERY YEAR. It was like they couldn't stand to let them live. The first time I couldn't believe my eyes. I watched them willfully roll over a section, get up and move to another section to squash them flat. They repeated until every lily was flattened. If one raised a defiant head the neck day, they killed it again! WTH! (language modified for company nicer than mine)
Do many dogs exhibit this wanton flower hatred?

Hi Beth, You're in here late too!
I know! What did these innocent flowers do, right?
Kona preferred to behead and then tear up the flowers.......ahhh yes...complete destruction.
That was so funny with your kids doing the roll and flatten technique. And like you said, they did it "gleefully".
I find that I still look at a flower and then look away before I comment on it.
Kona trained us oh so well.
Did I mention that she was also an accomplished pick pocket ?
She would have been a criminal's delight.........certainly a full fledged partner!
