Bill and I happened to catch Episode 1 of "Operation Wild" on PBS. It is a show about veterinary treatments for large/wild animals. In Episode 1, they cover a young gorilla in Cameroon who was orphaned after his mother was shot and killed. One of his arms was damaged from the gunshot and as he grew older, the bones were growing in a way that meant he was in constant pain.
The original plan was to remove bone and pin them into the correct position but that turned out not to be possible. So the decision had to be made to amputate for pain relief. The woman who rescued him went through the same sorts of agonies most of us have faced w/ our own furkids---is it the right decision, will they be the same afterwards etc. It is a very sweet ending. The show goes back and forth w/ different animals so you'll need to watch the whole episode to see the outcome, but I think it is worth it.
I'll post the link which you should be able to watch online: http://www.pbs......tion-wild/

PS: The link seems to take you to Episode 3 directly, but Episode 1 is the one about the gorilla. Just look down the page for the Panda, which is also in Episode 1.
Active 10+ Pyr mix suddenly came up lame with ACL tear in left rear leg. Scheduled for a TPLO but final pre-op x-rays indicated a small suspicious area, possibly OSA, which could have caused the ACL tear. Surgeon opened the knee for TPLO but found soft bone. Biopsy came back positive for OSA. Became a Tripawd 9/18/14. Carbo6 with Cerenia and Fluids. Pain free and living in the moment. Crossed the Bridge on 7/12/15 after probable spread of cancer to her cervical spine. A whole lifetime of memories squeezed into 10 months. Here's her story: Eloise
Oh I love it! Thank you so much for sharing, I've bookmarked it so when we're somewhere with free bandwidth we can watch.
I just love PBS, it's the only network we watch when we're around a TV. It's one of the reasons we are so proud when Jerry got featured in their Nature documentary, another great show if we do say so ourselves 🙂
