Hi guys -
Liz here - Our tripawd Duchess earned her wings in February, but I have a question for our newest addition - Maverick. Maverick is a rescue we weren't expecting, but couldn't refuse. He is a year and a half old blue great dane with ENDLESS energy. We are still adjusting.
Background: He came to us with stomach problems - though that wasn't shared with us when we took him in. In the fall he bloated and had surgery. Somewhere along the line, his tacking tore and he had a hole in his stomach. The week we got him his spleen made its way into the hole, bloated and turned and then his stomach did the same. BUT he survived!
However, we've been unable to get his stools normalized. We've tried so many things and have been working VERY closely with our Vet. She's great, really, but we're at the point where we'd like a second opinion just in case.
On tripawds.com, I remember reading a few recommendations of dog nutritionists that were recommended for phone cancer nutrition consultations. Can anyone pass these along to me? I would assume this person would be able to talk with us about nutrition or things to consider not related to cancer...maybe not? Just trying to consider all options.
Thanks!
The magnificent Duchess, our Great Dane, brought us here. Diagnosed early July, 2014, Duchess had her front, left amp a week later. She handled her four rounds of carboplantin like a champ. She earned her wings late January 2015. A royal reincarnated into a wee-dane, she was bursting with personality and demands. We miss her a lot and are very thankful for the time we had with her. We welcomed a new rescue Dane into the family in March - Maverick! We're thankful he doesn't realize we'd meet all his demands if he put them out there.
Awww congratulations on Maverick! What a lucky dawg to get you as a family. I know it's common for rescue dogs to have stomach issues for a while but wow, he bloated too? OH my gosh! So glad he lived.
What part of the country do you live in? We can offer some suggestions. Also, was this the Forums post you were thinking of: seeking veterinary nutritionist
Our Resources page also has some links to holistic vet directories.
One other tip: have you tried giving him green clay? When our Wyatt came to us from the rescue his stomach was a mess. The green clay, along with probiotics and Pepcid, worked miracles.

Thanks, Jerry! Yes - I affectionately refer to him as our Lucky Lemon and the Million Dollar Rescue. He really is very lucky. The surgeons did great work - said 50/50 he gets through surgery and 50/50 gets through the first three days. He is a fighter and was meant to be part of our family.
That post looks familiar. For some reason I also think I'd read of one out of North Carolina. I'll look through the listing on the resource page. Thanks for the direct "point."
Green clay has helped. I picked that up from one of your posts. But it hasn't "solved." Things we've also tried or are currently using (all in careful consultation with the Vet):
Probiotic, PREbiotic, pumpkin, yogurt, acupuncture, chinese herbs, currently trying Flagyl, bi-weekly B-12 shots, green clay and have been on two different foods and green tripe (to help with weight gain). Sigh. We'll get there!

Oh! And we are in the Kansas City area.
