This totally makes sense. I was just talking to a friend who said her older, arthritic dog is now much more sensitive to loud noises. This study explains it:
From the AAHA NEWStat Newsletter: Study: Noise sensitivity in dogs could be a sign of serious pain
A new study conducted by animal behavior scientists from the United Kingdom and Brazil found that dogs who show fear or anxiety when faced with loud or sudden noises, such as those produced by vacuum cleaners, could actually be in pain.
The researchers were particularly interested in dogs who developed a sensitivity to loud noises over time. Researchers discovered that those dogs weren’t just afraid of loud noises—they also had associated musculoskeletal pain. READ MORE

This is so interesting... I would never have thought the loud noises actually cause Jasper "pain" in her dumbo ears but it makes sense. And thus the reason she barks at all vacuums! So when we have fireworks and I cover her ears, she can probably still hear them but the pain must be less... thanks for sharing!

Our story: Broke rear leg in June 2013 - non-conclusive results for cancer so leg was plated and pinned. Enlarged spleen in September 2013 and had it removed and was diagnosed with Hemangiosarcoma and started chemotherapy. Became a Tripawd January 8th, 2014 and definitive Hemangiosarcoma diagnosis. Three major surgeries in 7 months and Shelby took them all like a champ only to lose her battle to cancer in her brain. We had 8 amazing extra months together and no regrets. #shelbystrong #loveofmylife
