I've posted about adopting Teddy - a 3 year old shih tzu.  In most ways he is an absolutely AMAZING dog.  He is wonderful with the kids.  He is so far completely house trained when people are home.  No aggressions, all around wonderful.

Until I have to leave him.  And sometimes, I just can't take him with me!  The first 2 times I left him in a crate he was fine.  I left him about 2 hours both times.  The next time, about 2 hours again.  He pooped in there.  OK, fine.  He must have needed to go.  (I do always take him for a really good walk before putting him in the crate.)  Next time, 1.5 hours in the crate.  Poops again.  2 hours in there, poops again.  Tonight, 1 hour.  poops again.whatever

I do have him in Spencer's old kennel, which is obviously a big one.  But it was one of those puppy to adult ones and after the first accident I put the "wall" in so that it is about 1/3 of the size I had it for Spencer.  When Teddy poops in it he then steps all in it and is an absolute mess.

Each time I take him out, clean the kennel really well, bathe him and go about our business.

He does get worked up when we leave.  If he thinks that we have left (like if the kids all walk out the door and he doesn't seem to realize that I'm still here) he goes to the door and yowls like his life is over.  If we all leave I can hear him from outside.  He does seem to calm down after about 5 minutes though.

Please help!  I need to be able to leave him sometimes - you know, to do stuff like grocery shop!  Tomorrow I'm going to be out for a while and I'm taking him to doggy daycare.  But I really can't do that every time I need to run to the store!  I'm rarely gone for more than 2-3 hours at a time, so it isn't like he has to stay here for long.

Jac and Angel Spencer.  Spencer was 5.25 years old. He fought a grade 3 fibrosarcoma, started on his shoulder.  Left front leg amputated in August 2011.  15 weeks of chemo finished 12/22/11 (mytox and adria).  Lung mets found on x-rays 12/28/11.  Started carboplatin 1/6/12. Went to Heaven on 2/27/12. I miss him like crazy every day.  See his blog here:  http://spencer.tripawds.com/

Oh, it sounds like separation anxiety with the crying but I always thought they did not mess in their kennel??  Have you tried keeping him in the crate at different times when everyone is there so he does not associate it with feeling abandoned?  I never used crates, and paid the price with two chewers.  I wonder if there is some kind of "no-go" spray you could use ??  And I was just thinking about the little guy.

Harley is an 8 year old Golden Retriever. Amp surgery for an infiltrative lipoma canceled due to two masses in chest. A rescue, he found his forever home on 3/18/07 and left for his eternal home on 1/09/13. His story and medical history are at http://myharley.....pawds.com/

That's separation anxiety. You can overcome this, it just takes some re-thinking. We dealt with it with Wyatt Ray . He's totally fine now, so if he can get over it, so can Teddy.

This Forum post has TONS of great advice in it, here's some midnight reading for ya!

I have been thinking about trying that.  the kids hate the idea of him being in there when they are home though.  haha  They start school soon, so I figure I'll do it once they are gone all day.  I'd try it sooner; but the kids and I are going out of town on Saturday for 1.5 weeks.  I considered taking him with us; but I don't think he will be able to handle staying in the hotel when we have to go eat and stuff.  So instead he is staying here with my husband and doing doggy day care during the day.  I really, really want to get this worked out though!!!

When school starts should be perfect -- maybe the first week will be hectic, but then you'll be able to set up a schedule and have some structure.  I know I need structure.  When I first got Harley he bit at his inner legs and pads of his feet until he bled.  I was at wits end and the foster said it was allergies, then mange.  One smart vet said it might be a little neurotic behavior.  I thought well I will just keep the cone on him while I am gone, first to let the sores heal and then just to prevent him starting up again.  I think he wore a cone for maybe 2 months and I hoped he would forget the licking -- he did, he just had to unlearn.  It was so awful I would just sit and cry, but I could not give him up.
