Hello All! Just wanted to introduce the new Tripawd member of our family! We recently bought a home and it just wasn't complete without a dog. As we searched for a sweet pup to adopt we came upon Freyja. She is a St. Bernard mix for sure (mom was pure bred) and we suspect the sperm donor was a Boxer or Mastiff given her Brindle coloring. Born with a non functioning front left leg she has been a tripawd sense birth and had the limb totally amputated while in the care of an animal shelter. We love her to bits and are excited to grow with her, she was just born in June 2015!

Any tips or tricks for tripawd puppies are welcome, she is working on crate training and is almost there with the bathroom thing, just needs to learn better bladder control. So far it seems like there aren't to many things that are different from training a four legged puppy but we are prepared if something else comes up!

This little (big) pup has a heart of gold and a face of. well. drool. We love her so much and look forward to keeping up on this ever so helpful page!

-Grace and Naomi (and Freyja too!)

P.S images to come, but I don't have them online and I don't think I have permissions yet to attach images.

Hi again, thanks for sharing your story!

You don't need any additional permissions to add photos, but they do have to be hosted on line somewhere.  You can start a blog here for free and load the pictures there (that's the way I do it).

Here are the instructions for adding photos.

I just adopted a 10 month old pug mix tripawd.  Her name is Elly and she was hit by a car and lost her back right leg.  She is my second tripawd but my first so young, and not dealing with cancer.  I'm definitely going to spend much more time working on strength exercises with her- she has a lot of years a head without that spare leg!

How sweet!  The biggest thing is traction .   Tripawds have a hard time with wood floors, so rugs, runners or even just yoga matts help.  Since she's going to be a bigger girl, you might want to eventually have raised dishes for her.  A good harness is also essential - we use the ruffwear harness for Murphy, but it tends to slip some since he doesn't have that front leg to hold it in place.  The  convert harness is newer since we bought ours and looks like it stays in place better for the front tripawds.  They both have a handle on top which is great to help get the dog out of the car.

And yes, we love pictures!

Murphy had his right front leg amputated due to histiocytic sarcoma at 7 years old. He survived 4 years, 2 months & 1 week, only to be taken by hemangiosarcoma at 11 1/2 years 6/12/17
