I just finished reading about Rio and I am so sad.  But I am also so pissed.  I have lost one dog to cancer and I have one dog fighting it.  I fall in love with these dogs on this site and then we lose one and it breaks my heart to the point of sobbing.

Greg and I have no (human) kids.  Currently, upon our death all of our estate is to be liquidified and given to Best Friends Animal Sanctuary.  I would like to change that and leave a significant portion to one of the programs that focuses on finding a cure for this shitty disease.  I know I will have to do alot of research, but I would love input as to reputable beneficiaries.

I apologize in advance for being so blunt but I am tired of feeling the victim here and I want to fight this mess with, literally, everything I have.

Zeus was a Husky mix diagnosed with Osteosarcoma at age 11.  A visible lung met and suspicious spot on his liver meant a poor prognosis-six weeks was our vet's best guess. We decided to fight for our boy and his right front leg was amputated on 12/1/11. We did six rounds of chemo, changed his diet and spoiled him completely rotten. We were blessed with 10 great months after diagnosis. Against the odds, the lung met remained a single met and grew very little over those months. A wonderful furbaby with the most gentle spirit, he fought with a strength that we never imagined he possessed. We have no regrets...

Love this post....I share that frustration and I am so crushed about Rio, too.

Joe and I are your Northern twins. No (human) kids and completely focused on rescue work, donating, etc. I am thinking the Vet schools (Cornell, Tufts, etc) may know of "fundraising for research" organizations. And may be able to vet (pardon the pun) those org's as well

my estate planning includes the Morris Animal Foundation, which sponsors the K9 Cancer walks each year.  their website is:

we have been involved with them for quite sometime, and are very impressed with their research and their dedication to improving life for all.

We also love Morris Animal Foundation. I've actually heard from a researcher studying bone cancer in dogs that had research funded by MAF. They are really trying to do good.

And I really believe that fighting/researching canine cancers helps humans as well (and vice versa) since we unfortunately share so many of the same diseases.

(Not to take anything away from Best Friends - because I definitely admire their work as well... But I like the idea of trying to help do my part to fight this fricking beast Cancer that takes so many of our loved ones from us.)

Jackie, Angel Abby's mom

Abby: Aug 1, 2009 – Jan 10, 2012. Our beautiful rescue pup lived LARGE with osteosarcoma for 15 months – half her way-too-short life. I think our "halflistic" approach (mixing traditional meds + supplements) helped her thrive. (PM me for details. I'm happy to help.) She had lung mets for over a year. They took her from us in the end, but they cannot take her spirit! She will live forever in our hearts. She loved the beach and giving kisses and going to In-N-Out for a Flying Dutchman. Tripawds blog, and a more detailed blog here. Please also check out my novel, What the Dog Ate. Now also in paperback! Purchase it at Amazon via Tripawds and help support Tripawds!

We too have supported the MAF Canine Cancer Campaign in the past and often form Tripawds Teams for their annual walks.

Please do your homework and let us know which organization you decide to support. Thanks for asking!
