Does anybodys tripawd lay down on there amputation side.  Angas has a right hind leg amputation, but is not laying down on that side.  He starts to lay down on the stump but then rolls to his left side.  He will go onto the right if I roll him over (for when he has is massage).  Will he eventually lay on that side as its only been four weeks since his operation or do we accept that he never will.

it takes a while, but eventually we found laying on the amp side was just as comfortable (we are a front right amp).  takes time for all to heal and for the pain to discipate...

It is still early for Angas to be laying on his amp side. It may not be so much a matter of comfort, as it is with difficulty getting up. And as a a wild pack animal at heart, it is in his instinct to be able to jump up quickly without feeling vulnerable.

As he becomes stronger and more confident, he will be more comfortable laying on either side.

Rumbles, front amp Boxer, is nearly two months post-op and he still definately avoids lying on his surgery side. But I agree with Admin, I think it's an ease of motion thing, rather than due to discomfort.

I think admin hit the nail on the head. Cooper actually did lay on his amp side right away, it used to make me cringe, especially as he plopped his whole 129 pounds ungracefully down, but he had EXTREME difficulty getting up on that side. I would imagine Angas will eventually lay down on that side.

Hi its Angas,

I had my massage the other night, and I was made to lay on my amputation side, it wasnt too bad, I wasnt keen at first.  What I did notice was that on that side I started coughing, any ideas anybody as to why.  My massage was great, I was very tight in my shoulders and chest, but I finally relaxed but it did take awhile, but with more massages this will improve.  I did have trouble getting back up to move onto my other side but with some help i was right.

Its not my favourite side, but for massage and brushing, I could cope for a little while.

Trouble laid on her amputation side from the beginning, but she was a front amp. She had to wear a t-shirt most of the time because I didn't want her laying outside and getting the surgery site dirty.

Cocoa is a right rear leg amp. It took her a long time to lay on her amp side, and then a longer time for her to lay on it regularly. It made me anxious/worried, so it was a great relief to me those first few times. I still smile when I see her laying that way (only on cushion, not the carpeting/floor). Give her time. When she's ready, she'll settle right in.
