My big Anatolian Shepherd Finn hates fireworks. I wouldn't say he's necessarily scared of them, but rather they make him angry. He barks, non stop... This past Friday it was past 1:30 in the morning before he finally settled down. And of course, since he was barking, the other two dogs had to be up with him barking as well. I was dreading last night because being in the country, in the south, I knew it was bound to be another late night of fireworks. But yesterday, I saw a post from a friend of mine that also has a large Anatolian, and of course his boy Turk reacts the same way as Finn does to fireworks. And I don't know if any of y'all have heard an Anatolian bark when it's angry, but it is absolutely deafening. His boy can set off the glass break alarm on his security system! Any who, he posted that he had read somewhere on the internet that playing dance music or heavy metal music can help to calm dogs down during thunderstorms/fireworks. I was skeptical, but he said he did it Friday night for his pups and they calmed right down, not a single bark. I was willing to try anything to avoid the non stop barking, I've been the tech at work all weekend and have had to be up rather early. So last night, sure enough around 9 the fireworks started, and Finn started to bark... and bark. So I hesitantly turned on the TV and turned it to a Sirius XM heavy metal station. I turned the volume up, to a bearable level. I was shocked. Silence fell through the house. Finn walked into his crate and settled down almost immediately. He even started yawning!! He was so calm, we were able to take him out for his late night potty break during a quiet spell with no problems. Needless to say we slept with heavy metal music playing all night and it worked amazing. What surprised me was that it worked even though he had already gotten worked up and was barking at them. It may not be my choice of music, but the dogs certainly loved it. The fireworks lasted til after midnight and the dogs were sound asleep, not a bark the rest of the night. It most certainly won't work for every dog I'm sure, but it worked for us. I'd much rather play obnoxious music for my pups all night than listen to barking, or give them drugs.

OH. My. DOG.

You are on to something here. This is incredible!

We'll have to experiment with Wyatt Ray when he barks his head off in the car. I'll keep you posted. Thanks for the tip!

This is CRAAAAAAZY!,! As pf this moment, I have no one afraid of thunderstorms, fireworks, etc., but I certainly have in the past...and probably will again!

Cannot believe the results! Your pups just look perfectly content!!

Can't wait to hear from Alison when she tries this out in Jasper Lily!

I have a friend whose grandkid is afraid of thunderstorms...gonna go see if I have an old Jimi Hendrix ALBUM to send her!!! It would be interesting to test different kinds of music.......I wonder if a little Bob Seger or the Eagles would do the same.....I think I could sleep with them on....Hendrix? Not so much!!

This is just amazing!, Thanks so much for sharing!

And I would LOVE to see a video where your Anatoilian is barking his "angry" bark and not using his "inside voice"! Looking forward to it!!

Still LOL at that video! Perfect!

Haha, I know I can get a video of Finn "talking to me", but he rarely barks his angry bark. Maybe if there are more fireworks tonight before the music comes on.

Here's Finn's "happy" bark. Now just times it by 2, and imagine listening to it for almost 5 hours straight lol.

Awesome!!! Fortunately, Jasper doesn't bark during the fireworks. She hides (which I guess doesn't bother anyone but I hate to see her sad). I should try this in the car which she has decided she doesn't care to ride in ... either it's my driving OR my music (I even put on Spanish tunes for her and she was petrified). 🙂

Glad you guys finally got some peace and rest!

Cassie,

Wow that is a bark but I'm not sure if I could sleep through heavy metal music, wonder how classical would work. My Weim barks at imaginary things so I would never know when to turn on the music. Thanks for the cure.

I haven't tried classical yet. Luckily the metal didn't have to be too loud, I was barely able to hear it down the hall with my bedroom door shut lol.

Haha I love that big dawg bark!

We've tried classical, spa and even Peruvian flute music for crazy Wyatt Ray . Although it helps keep our energy low, it doesn't work nearly as well as that headbanger stuff did for you. Can't wait to try it in the car.
