Recently my cousin posted a blog link about a dog that was given a heartworm medication and suffered virtually every one of the side effects before dying. This drug is called ProHeart 6 and is marketed as being extremely convenient because it is an injection that lasts 6 months. Apparently the drug was withdrawn in 2004 due to problems in the past and then reintroduced in 2008 by Wyeth (now Pfizer) after the company agreed to certain wording on the drug information sheet.
I have read that some heartworm medications are in short supply. You may take your dog for heartworm meds and be told that what you generally use is not in stock, and you may be offered this injection. You need to be fully informed if you consider it.
I'm not trying to be alarmist. Many, if not most, of our dogs on this site are a captive audience of compromised immune systems. This medication is specifically contraindicated for dogs whose immune systems are being challenged by cancer or chemo.
I'll put the blog link below. At the end of the story of Jack, a chow-lab mix, the author posts several references about ProHeart 6. She knows what she's talking about and backs it up with evidence.

From abandoned puppy to Tripawd Warrior Dude, Dakota became one of the 2011 February Furballs due to STS. Our incredibly sweet friend lived with grace and dignity till he impulsively raced over the Bridge on 12-15-12.
Dakota's thoughtful and erudite blog is at http://shari.tr.....pawds.com/
Thanks Shari!
I'm so glad we don't have to worry here about that stuff here in the desert...or at least not yet. I'd be a real basket case!No fleas, ticks or mosquitoes to speak of.
Comet - 1999 to 2011
She departed us unexpectedly January 23, 2011 at the age of 12 1/2.
She was born with a deformed front leg and a tripawd all of her life.
I'm not sure what brand Magnum used but for all of her life until the cancer diagnosis she had an annual heartworm injection. Soon after she got the cancer she was due to get another injection. The oncologist told me not to get her the injection and to start her on monthly tablets. I think he said it was because of the compromised immune system but I can't remember. It was early days in our cancer journey so I didn't ask too many more questions about the heartworm since I had heaps more questions for him about amputation, chemo etc....
Magnum: 30th May 2002 to 5th May 2012. Lost her back left leg to osteosarcoma on 5th Sep 2011. Lung mets found on 20th Mar 2012 but it was bone mets in the hip that ended her brave battle. Magnum's motto - "Dream as if you'll live for ever, live as if you'll die today" (James Dean). Loyal, loving, courageous and spirited to the end. My beloved heart dog, see her memoirs from Rainbow Bridge ...... http://princess.....pawds.com/
