Hello my friends,
I talked with Dr. Pam and she offered a few good suggestions.. One of which I think is a great idea. Lincolns mom posted about a drug called Selegine that is supposed to be helpful in Shy's circumstance. I am going to PM her about where she got it and what was the pricing.
I know with Sammy's metronomics I spend about $150 a month on his supplies, not including the fish oil. I will check out that website about the help for cancer stuff, thanks so much admin.
dellarose,
The suppliments depend on what type of cancer, I guess it just depends on what your furry kid has. Sammys cancer was osteosarcoma.
I know for Sammy he is on mushrooms, cranberry extract to combat the chemo issues with the kidneys, fish oil, and his chemo and other pills. I use for food the Evo, because it is low carb and carbs feed cancer.
My dogs have gone from being completely affordable to my most expensive payment because of their medical issues. How funny life is, I say I love my babies more than anything, than life gives me an opportunity to prove it 🙂
Anyway, thanks everyone oh so very much for talking me through a sad few days in this journey. I am very grateful tripawds is here. Sometimes life kicks you even when you are already down and it is nice to have someone say "that sucks, me too!"
Diagnosed with osteosarcoma in the right front leg 8/23/10,
leg fractured 8/27/10,
leg amputated 8/30/10

I couldn't begin to say how special Sammy is to us. Living and laughing with and loving this wonderful boy is priceless.
Elizabeth,
Selegiline is the human, generic equivalent to the brand name veterinary drug, Anipryl. Like so many human drugs marketed for veterinary use, the pharmaceutical companies tweak the dose just enough to make generic use a little more difficult to prescribe. The brand name of the human drug is Eldepryl. There is another form of the drug available under the brand name Zelapar & is an ODT (oral dissolving tablet), which seems to cause fewer GI related side effects. I'm not sure if Zelapar is off patent yet…
Your vet just needs to call a prescription in to the pharmacy of your choice. The generic will be significantly less expensive and the dosing shouldn't be that much of a problem. Seligiline, I believe, only comes in 5mg caps, so you will probably be giving more than 1 per dose, but should still be much less expensive.
I always either use a generic equivalent and use a compounding pharmacy, if necessary. Very often when human drugs are off patent & less profitable, they are marketed for veterinary use under a new brand name.
Cynthia
Elizabeth, how are things going with Shy?
