This is a fun topic .  Sassy's full name is Sassy Sugar Bear.  She got the Sassy part from a couple days after getting her she would turn and bark at me when I was talking to her.  Like she was giving me sass.  Sugar Bear just came from her just being a sugar and looking like a bear.  So that is how she got her name.  big-grin

We adopted Wookie at 14 mos of age, and his name was Shadow. No offense to the "Shadow"s of the world, but I have seen SOOOO many dark dogs named Shadow... I just didn't want another one. Before his chemo he had quite the facial hair going on, and with his coloring, he looked like Chewbaca from Star Wars, so he became Wookie. It took him about 2 mins to learn his name, I don't think he liked Shadow either, lol. His nickname was Boo Boo... I don't know why, he was just so sweet and goofy and lovable. I probably called him Boo Boo more than I called him Wookie.

Garth came from a shelter and was found as a stray. He had been there for 6 mos and they named him Garth. I always planned to change it, just haven't gotten around to it. 12 yrs later, I guess he's going to remain Garth, lol.

We just got Spock a few weeks ago, another rescue. He's 4.5 yrs, is happy with his name, so that's good enough for us. :)

Right hind limb amputated 7/3/12 for OSA, started on alternating cycles of Carboplatin and Doxorubicin and oral Palladia. Single lung met 9/1. Met in the neck muscle removed 9/30. Large mass in sublumbar lymph node 10/2. Rescue chemo with ifosfamide 10/6. Mets to the rib and axillary lymph node 10/21. Started Leukeran and Pred 10/25. Wookie left this Earth for a far better place on 12/4/12. I miss you, Boo, you were my heart.

No big stories for any of my dogs. They all came from rescues so came with names that I kept. End of story! :)

When I adopted Daisy the most recent pet I had named was my cat Maybelle.  In keeping with dairy cow themed names I decided Daisy would be cute.  I did not realize how many dogs are named Daisy.  I had never heard of a dog named that before LOL.  First trip to the dog park there was more than one!  We have been meeting Daisy's on a regular basis ever since.  Her nicknames are Chewy (short for Chewbacca) and Yeti Head -- because she has the whole beard thing going on.

This is a great threat!

Lupe was named after the Our Lady of Guadalupe, the patron saint of Mexico.  I was a graduate student in Mexican archaeology, living and working south of Mexico City, and just fell in love with the story of the Our Lady of Guadalupe and how my female Mexican friends really admired her.  I knew right then and there when I got a dog, her name would be Lupe...just needed to find the dog that matched.  And the irony of not being Chrisitan was never lost on me...but who cares.

As for nicknames, oh there were endless...Lu, Pooh Bear, Lupers, Lupita, Luperdoodle, Stinkerdoodle were some of my favs and of course when she was in trouble, the full "Guadalupe" would come out :) and boy did she know she was in for it.

I posted a "visit" from OLG that I had on a recent trip on my blog, still brings tears and chills when I think about it or look at the pictures, but in a good way.  http://lupepod....../#more-163

Next name is picked out, Genevieve, the patron saint of Paris...nickname will be Vivy and when ready, I will find the dog that matches again :)

Diagnosed with possible synovial cell sarcoma of right front elbow 5/31/12. Amputation surgery performed 6/7/12. Final diagnosis of histiocytic cell sarcoma 6/11/12. Her soul and spirit were strong, her body was not...my little girl earned her wings 6/14/12. We had picked out the name "Magnum" before we got our first dog.  We'd had the name in our heads for over a year thinking we would get a boy but it was a beautiful little girl who came to us when we met the litter and so she got stuck with the name Magnum.  Magnum describes her different personalities beautifully - sweet as Magnum icecream, as bubbly as a magnum of champagne but also as capable of warning off any unsavoury characters as another sort of magnum.

We also had all sorts of pet names for her depending on what she was up to like "little dog" when she was being sooky and cute, "monster dog" when she was being a bully and "ratbag dog" when she was being naughty.

P.S.  Sorry Jerry but I'm struggling just a little bit to see the resemblance.  Maybe if you were wearing glasses it would be more obvious.....

Magnum: 30th May 2002 to 5th May 2012. Lost her back left leg to osteosarcoma on 5th Sep 2011. Lung mets found on 20th Mar 2012 but it was bone mets in the hip that ended her brave battle. Magnum's motto - "Dream as if you'll live for ever, live as if you'll die today" (James Dean). Loyal, loving, courageous and spirited to the end. My beloved heart dog, see her memoirs from Rainbow Bridge ...... http://princess.....pawds.com/

I'm glad to see this revived. When I started it, I was so impressed by how much thought had gone into so many of our companions getting just the right name. And most were funny or clever or wistful or a little bit quirky. And I'm all for those characteristics!

Yes, Obie is definitely Evelyn's boy-toy these days. What she would do to him if he were 1200 miles closer!

When my oldest son was in elementary school, he had several critters and he named every single one of them after people he knew. He was too young to really be able to think of unique names but instead chose to match the pet's personality with people he knew who reminded him of those personalities.

We had Ron the turtle named after an easy-going family friend. We had Diana the guinea pig, named for a classmate of his that he had a terrific crush on (didn't tell her she had a wild-haired, red-and-white guinea pig named for her). We had two rats, Ralph and Kevin. Ralph was named for a boy he knew who was a decent enough fellow, but Kevin was special! Kevin turned out to be the meanest rat ever born. He was ok for the first couple of weeks we had him and then he turned into Satan. He scratched, bit, pawed at and generally tried to attack us with all he had. So my son named him for the biggest and meanest kid at his school.

My favorite? Ralph. Hands down. He was in the corner saying, "I hate this guy, too, so to make up for his behavior I will be extra good!"

Kevin died mid-seizure one day, out of the blue. It was actually quite distressing to witness, and I assumed he'd had a neurological problem that made him so mean. Ralph bloomed after losing his horrid roommate. Like people, animals need good roomies.

OMGosh!  I love all of these, but Wookie I must say that collection of names makes us Sci-Fi geeks of the world proud!

Zeus and Merlin were surrendered to the shelter where I was a volunteer.  The whole family was relinquished - mom, dad and seven pups so we actually got to see their parents.  Dad was full Husky with one blue and one brown eye.  Zeus had 1/4 of a blue eye and it just seemed mystical, powerful. So Zeus it was.  From day one Merlin was mischievous, cunning, and his spirit was just magical.  So Merlin it was.

Lately our hearts have begun to tell us that it is time to look for two new babies to join our tiny family.  The plan is to have two young dogs and then add at least one senior, special needs dog.  We are hoping that the pups will help to avoid the pain of an empty house since we know that a senior dog will leave us sooner than seems fair.  But, you can bet that if you watch Star Trek, Star Wars or Stargate you will probably smile when you hear the names....

Zeus was a Husky mix diagnosed with Osteosarcoma at age 11.  A visible lung met and suspicious spot on his liver meant a poor prognosis-six weeks was our vet's best guess. We decided to fight for our boy and his right front leg was amputated on 12/1/11. We did six rounds of chemo, changed his diet and spoiled him completely rotten. We were blessed with 10 great months after diagnosis. Against the odds, the lung met remained a single met and grew very little over those months. A wonderful furbaby with the most gentle spirit, he fought with a strength that we never imagined he possessed. We have no regrets...

Good for you, Lisa! There is nothing like opening your home and heart to a senior dog. I'd do it every few years if I could. We took on a 9-year-old collie after moving to the hills and she came with baggage, a personality and quirks. Those are polite ways for saying she was a PITA. And I wouldn't have traded it for anything. She was owned but neglected and deserved so much more than she was getting. I don't think she'd been inside a house in years, and this was at 8300 feet elevation in Colorado, for pete's sake. We gave her 4 years and packed them full.

As for naming newcomers, my son would say to name one Doctor and the other one Who. Then when you introduce Doctor and someone says "What?" you can say, " No. Who." winker

It has been a LONG time since I had a dog that I got as a puppy.  Our current dog, Teddy, we adopted when he was 3.5 years old.  He came named.  Spencer (our tripawd) was also a rescue, came named.  Before him I had Baron, I adopted him when he was I think 4 or 5 years old, came named...

20 years ago I was in high school and we got a puppy doberman.  We decided to either go some silly name like "Fluffy" (silly for a doberman) or kind of intimidating.  we went with intimidating and named him Adolf.  He was a sweet heart.

In college I did get a cat as a kitten.  (so 1995 I think.)  He was a "farm cat" and didn't have a tail.  I was going to name him "Bob" for his lack of a tail.  But it never seemed right.  Then one day he was burrowing under my blanket and my then boyfriend commented that he was like a meer cat.  We named him Timon (from the Lion King).

Jac and Angel Spencer.  Spencer was 5.25 years old. He fought a grade 3 fibrosarcoma, started on his shoulder.  Left front leg amputated in August 2011.  15 weeks of chemo finished 12/22/11 (mytox and adria).  Lung mets found on x-rays 12/28/11.  Started carboplatin 1/6/12. Went to Heaven on 2/27/12. I miss him like crazy every day.  See his blog here:  http://spencer.tripawds.com/

I've already posted how our dogs Hunter and Hailey got their names, but here are their nicknames:

For Hunter... it's Hunter Roo (no idea how that came about!) and just plain "Hunt".

For Hailey.... peanut, pee wee, princess, psycho dog, ADD child, Jo Jo, and even more that I can't remember right now!   She answers to anything but knows only to be released for a fetch by saying Hailey.

We are getting a new chocolate lab pup on Jan. 26th, our "up and coming" hunting dog, and we're not coming up with any names we can really agree on yet!  Harley, Henry, Hank, Riley, Scout, Gunner, Jackson and Beretta have all come up.

And we should really stick with two syllables for a hunting dog.

Harley works since we do ride a Harley, but hubby thinks it may be too common.  If the new pup was a girl she'd instantly be Mocha Jo.  But we're getting a male for sure.  The parents are Pickett and Cabela Jo.

When you get to start from scratch, naming is so important!

Here's a FB link to the video of the pups:  http://www.face.....9110657228

Our Super Dog Hunter crossed over the Rainbow Bridge on a beautiful summer day in July, just 3 days shy of his 10th Birthday. He gave us everything since he was 8 weeks old.  Hunter was a 14 month warrior of OS.  We LOVE and MISS him every day.

We are prone to naming our dogs after watch-manufacturers, because....groan... they're all watch dogs!  We have had two boxers, "Seiko" and "Swatch" and now our DDB is "Elgin".  We draw the line at "Rolex" and "Timex" because that seems too obvious, but there are serious designs on naming the next one "Tag" or "Skagen".

Oh I vote for Radar! I know you have 2 "H" names now and may want to stick with the theme, but Radar is great!

It never mattered what I named my dogs because they all came to "Dammit" or "What now" or "Seriously?" Those were the printable ones.
