Ooooh, this is a fun post!

Boo's official race name is "Arjo's Blue Bird" ...but they just called her "Birdie" around the track.   We weren't crazy about "Birdie" but we wanted to keep it similar...something with a "B".   My husband, being the clever romantic that he is, suggested we call her Boo in honor of the Lobo song "Me and You And a Dog Named Boo".    It fits her (and us) perfectly!

Boo became a Tripawd Warrior Princess on Sept 8, 2009. She crossed over the Rainbow Bridge 2.7 years later on April 29, 2012. Run free Angel Boo!

Thanks Shanna!  Now I don't have to think too hard on how I named my dogs since I did it in my last post!  As a matter of fact, I forgot Rocket's original shelter name!

Copied:

Comet came with her name from the shelter and I don't know if the crappy people that had her prior named her or the shelter did.  I just assumed whoever it was probably watch the sitcom TV show 'Full house' where the dog's name Comet.  Rocket's name was "Bolt" from the shelter.  I had been to an adoption and a border collie had the name Rocket and I wanted the name.  I never put the thought together that Rocket and Comet were sort of similar in style.  The Monkeybutt name wasn't even me!  Comet named him that (she talks to me)!

But for fun here's a list of all my dog's names – I wonder if it says something about me?

Honey – white spitz

Sugar – white spitz

Bunny – white spitz

Tiger – white spitz

Cubby – black chow

Astro – cream chow (albino actually)

Peanut – later changed to Goofy – Golden Retriever

Snooker –  Black Chow

Mugsy – Lab Boxer Mix

Dot – Bernese Mtn Dog Mix with a black spot on tongue

Comet – who knows

Rugby – Shepherd Mix

Rocket – who knows

Her Retired AvatarComet - 1999 to 2011

She departed us unexpectedly  January 23, 2011 at the age of 12 1/2.

She was born with a deformed front leg and a tripawd all of her life.

I was reading through the original post, and I cracked up where Comet said :
cometdog said:

Who knew Jerry was a veggie eating, tie-dyed T-shirt wearing Deadhead dog??

My original name was "Chopper," but the good lady who fostered me after I was dumped by some Oaktown ghetto punks decided that Chopper was a terrible name, so she called me "Wyatt."

The ghetto creeps spent more time coming up with a clever name than they spent with Wyatt Ray ! For shame - it was a cute name but not now!

ok, they didn't know about seatbelts at the time

Got a chuckle...just because you felt the need to let us know you are safe drivers NOW! It totally puts you in a better light knowing you are going to Grateful Dead concerts with your seatbelts latched! big-grin

That Comet -- she just said it like it is!!!!

Here is an older post on this topic I started waaaay back in February 2010... you might be interested to read the posts of some members who aren't around anymore, part of Tripawds history!

What's in a Name? (or nickname?)

Here is what I posted on the pug girls:

They were bred by my Uncle Paul who was an actor who lived in LA. He named all his pugs after Shakespearean Characters, he used Avoncliff as the breeder name. The girls are sisters from different litters.  Their mom was Cordelia (King Lear), their grandpa was Malvolio (Twelfth Night).  Mag's litter mate brother was Enobarbus (Antony and Cleopatra).

I picked  Maggie's name with deference to my uncle: Avoncliff's Margaret, since there are several Margarets in Shakespeare's plays, and I was POSITIVE that I would name her Molly. The first time I saw her at 10 weeks old I knew she was a Maggie!

Paul named my other pug: Avoncliff's Titania.  Titania is the fairy queen from A Midsummer's Nights Dream.  That is a mouthful for a name, so my mom and I came up with Tani.  I brought Tani home at 10 months old.

Maggie's main nickname is Spud. Why? Well just look at her.  It also helps to know her a little- she is just a spud.   And sometimes I use the collective Spuds when talking about both of them.  I also call Tani monkey dog because she is kind of crazy and throws her body around. And then there are the standard Magster, Tanster, Maggie Mae, Tani Fae.

Of course when they were younger both of them were named 'NO!!', or '#%@# NO!!'.  But with pugs NO is usually followed by some amount of giggling because what ever they are doing is pretty funny.

Please note that Tani's nickname was monkey dog looooong before the current evolution of the 'Monkeydogs'.

And now for pug boy Obie:

I adopted Obie from the local pug rescue group, his name was Diego.  Because I already had Titania I knew he had to be Oberon.  Oberon is the king of the faeries from Midsummer  (see Tani's name above).  Obie learned his new name in about a week.  I am glad we changed it for two reasons: he really looks like an Obie, and he really didn't have a good start in life- I like that he has a happy new name to go with his now happy life!  He doesn't really have a nickname yet.

I love these stories and the nick names. Some are too funny.

I also had a mixed mutt in high school that looked like a skinny little coyote. We named her Lazar Wolf, after a minor character in Fiddler on the Roof - cuz it's an awesome name and cuz she was wolfie. We just called her Lazar.

Abby: Aug 1, 2009 – Jan 10, 2012. Our beautiful rescue pup lived LARGE with osteosarcoma for 15 months – half her way-too-short life. I think our "halflistic" approach (mixing traditional meds + supplements) helped her thrive. (PM me for details. I'm happy to help.) She had lung mets for over a year. They took her from us in the end, but they cannot take her spirit! She will live forever in our hearts. She loved the beach and giving kisses and going to In-N-Out for a Flying Dutchman. Tripawds blog, and a more detailed blog here. Please also check out my novel, What the Dog Ate. Now also in paperback! Purchase it at Amazon via Tripawds and help support Tripawds!

Karen, I'm glad you shared this. I didn't know about the Shakespeare connection or that Tani was Titania. I love the play, and I love the painting by Richard Dadd (The Fairy Feller's Master Stroke) that shows Oberon and Titania and all their minions. If you haven't seen it, Wikipedia has an image you can enlarge and spend hours staring at and still not see everything.

Pugs and bulldogs are spuds. Evelyn often gets called Pudge or Cow or Pig. She has elements in common with them all. It's not mean, but it's often honest. Dakota, oddly enough, is often called Tater because we used to say he was the color of a sweet potato. Funny how these things morph, isn't it?

From abandoned puppy to Tripawd Warrior Dude, Dakota became one of the 2011 February Furballs due to STS. Our incredibly sweet friend lived with grace and dignity till he impulsively raced over the Bridge on 12-15-12.

Dakota's thoughtful and erudite blog is at http://shari.tr.....pawds.com/

I love the names and where folks get them. But I also love how they evolve into these sweet little names that mean nothing at all except to the people/dogs that use them. That would be my Baby Woo and my Zippy Doo and Tosca Too. My Pupface and my Baby Z and my Moosie-Moose. My Sweetness and my Cuddle-puppy and my Hairball. And all the other derivations thereof.

Naming a Boxer was fun. We ran through all of the possible boxing-related names. I didn't want anything too macho, because even as a wee pup, Rumbles was already a big sweetie. So we landed on "Let's Get Ready to Rumble!" as the inspiration for Rumbles' name.

His best friend (who joined our family one year after Rumbles) was a Boxer mix, so we went back through the boxing ideas and named her Punch. This more macho name was actually perfect for her...she was a sweet toughie.

Now we have a blond Chihuahua named Sugar Cookie. Which isn't as sweet as it sounds...when my kids were early teens, they would say "Sugar!" in place of a cuss word. So when the little blondie came along, they thought it was funny to name her Sugar. I added Cookie to the name after a few days of listening to them giggle uncontrollably every time they said her name {a few months later, my daughter's friend got a brown Chihuahua and named him Fudge Brownie}.

And last, our cats (past and present):

Sweet William

Sugar Bob

Sticky Jim

Lily Pearl

I used to watch a show on TLC called "An Adoption Story" and I would bawl my eyes out at every show. There was this one show where a couple adopted a baby from somewhere like Guatemala and her name was Valentina. The baby was so beautiful and so was the story and I thought if I were going to have another baby I would name it Valentina. But I decided not to have another baby and I got a Great Dane instead lol and I named her Valentina. It's a Big name for a Big Dog and a beautiful name for a beautiful Dog!!! I later found a Mexican hot sauce called Valentina that I love because I love Mexican food and anything spicy. So that name really suits A Dog of mine!!!

Ok, most of my pets name stories are boring, but I'll share them anyway.

Kali (first dog as an adult, boxer)- I knew I wouldn't have anymore kids and I wanted a pretty girlie name. Hence Kali.  Or Kal or Kali-Girl

Dakota (boxer)-came with that name.  He's 90 lbs and the most sensitive (read whiny), loving cuddler you'll ever meet.  Therefore, Dakota-Bear, Bear Bear, or just Bear.  He answers to them all.

Roxy- my husband named her after Kali's mom. Or Rox, and since the amputation it's become Hopsy or Ms. Hops.  She doesn't care.

Now cats:

Sherman- stray that showed up. My son is a war history buff so SHE (yes, Sherman was a female) was named after tanks. Full name Sherman Tiger Panzer. She has since passed.

Mel and Taz-brother and sister. My son was holding Mel and said he wanted to name it Melinda "because its a pretty name." We didn't know if the little gray ball of fur was male or female so we talked him into Mel. Thank goodness because Mel is a male.  He also goes by Melvin.  Taz I named because she wreaks havoc on everything. She once jumped off the desk, dug her claws into the wall, and slid on down. The claw marks are still there.  She's also Tazzie, Razmataz, or Raz.

And last but not least. We came home one day in April 2011 and found a humongous, beautiful, shiny black cat on our porch. The first thing that came to mind was Elizabeth's Sammy. So we have Sam the cat.  He's just Sam.

I also named my mom's white shih tzu, Ebony….just for the irony.  She also answers to Ebb or Ebonezer.

Hey Leslie- good to hear from you!

Shari- I always called Maggie- Spud, and when Tani came along I called them both The Spuds.  Sometimes I would call Tani little Spud.  But since Mag has been gone the nickname is gone too.  I now call Tani- big girl or Tanster.  It doesn't really matter what I call her now as she is deaf.

I'll check out the image you are talking about.  In the summer I work for the local Shakespeare Festival- in 2009 we did Midsummer.  The costumes were steam punk- Oberon was awesome.  Titania was OK.  I'll send you a pic if I can find one.

Cooper was already Cooper when we adopted him, not only was he 6 years old so already pretty familiar with the name, Cooper was, just..... wel Cooper. There was never a thought to change it , it fit. Baby Samson and most of you already know, Samson after Samson in the bible, his full name Highlander Braveheart Samson, Highlander being the name of the kennel he came from, Braveheart as a tribute to Cooper and all other fallen Tripawds and Samson, already explained. He was really the first dog I ever had that needed named.
