Ok, we're past one event and into the next.  Trouble now has a fat ear - doesn't seem to be bothering her.  I wouldn't have found it, except I like to play with her ears. I'm giving Dr F a call in the morning to see if he wants to drain it or let it absorb on its own.

I think Dan was right - she sits all day wondering what she can do to keep mom worried. I may have to loan her out so I can get some rest.

If the hematoma isn't too big your vet might be able to drain it and then inject a steroid into it to reduce the swelling.  Some dogs do need sedation and placement of a drain tube but usually only if the hematoma is large and painful. I have also had luck with oral prednisone but then Trouble would have to stop her Rimadyl.

It isn't huge, Pam.  From the tip of the ear, down the front edge about 1/2 way down the edge and about 3/4 wide.  Does not appear to be bothering her.  She can sleep on it, not obsesively shaking her head, I hope we don't have to do the predisone route.

Poor Trouble!  Good grief!!!!  I hope it clears up without the the whole steroid route either.

Now we know why old folks sit around and talk about their ailments because they have so many (no offense to old people)!  Comet and Trouble could talk for hours to each other about their ailments!

Her Retired AvatarComet - 1999 to 2011

She departed us unexpectedly  January 23, 2011 at the age of 12 1/2.

She was born with a deformed front leg and a tripawd all of her life.

Ugh - from one thing right to the next!

Hang in there, and hope the vet visit is quick & painless.

Comet sure is keeping you on your toes!  I hope that the vet isn't too concerned and it can drain on its own.

Any word from the vet?

Charlie got them a lot (we think due to his allergies, he would shake his head). The first one was pretty big, so they did surgery (about 4-5 years ago). Talk about a blood bath! As soon as he was out, they tried to bandage it, well, even sedated, he had mad skills, got the bandage off and violently shook his head. Blood streams everywhere in the clinic!

All of the rest actually ended up healing on their own (partly because I was able to catch them quicker, after going through the first experience).

Hope Trouble isn't living up to her name and that it is able to go down on its own. laugh

I called the clinic this morning.  They normally drain them, so I will take her and leave her there on my way to work in the morning. He still may look at it and decide to leave it alone.

Hi Shanna,

Here's hoping that it's nothing to worry about.  Chalk it up to the life of a tripawd pawrent....worry, worry and then some.  We will be thinking of you.  Please keep us posted.

Kami, Angel M and Kobe

My sweet golden Mackenzie.  She became my angel on Dec 29, 2010 at the age of 8 1/2  although she was always my angel from the time we brought her home.  She was diagnosed with osteosarcoma in Sept 2009 and officially became a tripawd (front leg) on Nov 5, 2009.  She will be forever in my heart and now she's running free with all of our other tripawd heroes.  I love you Mackenzie!

Well, not so lucky as to allow the hematoma to absorb.  Trouble had surgery this afternoon and is spending the night at the hospital.  They like to keep them contained to a small area the first night to minimize the chance of bleeding.

This is NOT what I had in mind.yell   Hoping for an update before they leave for the evening. (I may just call them!)
