Okay, I admit it, we are STILL spoiling Zeus six weeks after surgery. I am a first class worrier and extremely protective of those three remaining legs. Our mattress is still in the floor, we still carry him upstairs at night and down in the morning, etc., etc., etc. He does great getting around the house and running in the yard, but since he is "mature" I had convinced myself that he just wasn't as agile as all of your gorgeous dogs I see playing on the beach and in the woods....
Well, today Zeus decided I'm full of crap. We left work (yep, he's still practicing law ) and walked to the car. Just as I lifted the rear door he bounded into the back of my full size SUV as easy as if it were a Red Rider Wagon. No picking-up or lifting by mom. Just a big leap from a complete standstill! My heart stopped and I was stunned motionless, until I saw him land and then bounce around and give me that "did you SEE THAT" look, at which point I sat down on the bumper and just laughed for a moment.
So, for those of you who have posted recently asking whether older dogs are good candidates for amputation, Zeus says: Yep.
Lisa and BatZeus
Zeus was a Husky mix diagnosed with Osteosarcoma at age 11. A visible lung met and suspicious spot on his liver meant a poor prognosis-six weeks was our vet's best guess. We decided to fight for our boy and his right front leg was amputated on 12/1/11. We did six rounds of chemo, changed his diet and spoiled him completely rotten. We were blessed with 10 great months after diagnosis. Against the odds, the lung met remained a single met and grew very little over those months. A wonderful furbaby with the most gentle spirit, he fought with a strength that we never imagined he possessed. We have no regrets...

This is awesome! Lucy tries to tell me not to worry too. Now she's only 6 but I am a worrier... I haven't let her jump up anywhere yet, it's been 4 weeks today and just 3 days since the incision revision. Zeus had that planned you know, catching you "off guard", he thought and thought and said I guess I'll just have to show her! Very very cool.
Mary, Lucy's mom
Lucy's front right leg was amputated 12/19/11. Thankfully there was no tumor, but her nerves were found to be degenerative. Life as a tripawd is Lucy's new adventure!!
Way to go, Zeus! Now, don't go scaring your mom, but you showed her! You ain't no baby!
You're a rock star, Zeus. Keep it up!
Jackie, Angel Abby's mom
Abby: Aug 1, 2009 – Jan 10, 2012. Our beautiful rescue pup lived LARGE with osteosarcoma for 15 months – half her way-too-short life. I think our "halflistic" approach (mixing traditional meds + supplements) helped her thrive. (PM me for details. I'm happy to help.) She had lung mets for over a year. They took her from us in the end, but they cannot take her spirit! She will live forever in our hearts. She loved the beach and giving kisses and going to In-N-Out for a Flying Dutchman. Tripawds blog, and a more detailed blog here. Please also check out my novel, What the Dog Ate. Now also in paperback! Purchase it at Amazon via Tripawds and help support Tripawds!
Way to go, Zeus. Way to show your mom that just cuz you have three legs doesn't mean you're not a tough old dog.

Hey Zeus- way to show mom how it is done!
If you really want to scare her try this: Roly Poly Pug, my first blog post way back in November 2009.
Karen and the pugapalooza
OMgosh, Karen, that blog is SO funny. They are so resilient that it just amazes me. Would be nice if we could bottle-up some of that aloof-ness for use when our human paranoia becomes too great!

Love the new name Zeus ol' buddy! Just take it easy with all that jumping around.
This bat business reminds us of the fruitbat nickname Tazzie gave Caira Sue in this in this chemo diet discussion back in 2009. If you've ever seen her header appear at the top of this site – or her Tripawds Have More Fun t-shirt – you'll see how she could jump too. But it's her avatar that earned her the bat name!

Go Zeus! My mom was worrywart too and wouldn't let me do ANY jumping. So I had to jump onto the high bed to show her. Now we work together for safety, but last night she didn't come fast enough when I barked so I just did it myself. Duh.
Also we had a 10 month old yellow lab quadpawd dog here over the weekend (why?) and that boy kept going up on his hind legs to hug mom. I finally got fed up and I had to go up on my one back leg and get her!
