Hi all, just wanted everyone to know we haven't forgotten about you! We had to say good bye to our sweet old man Patrick, 10 1/2 year old golden retriever, after a long battle with brain cancer. He was both the best and worst dog I've ever had the pleasure of living with and his last week was a tough one. I know so many of you have gone through the same thing and understand how hard getting back to normal is.
What makes it harder is knowing that every day that goes by is one more day closer to Maverick's surgery. I see so much of Patrick in Maverick that it hurts thinking about all the things that can go wrong with such a major surgery like limb amputation. I trust my team and know we can get Maverick through this but its still scary.
We've set the surgery for November 4th in the hopes he will be healed enough to be begging at the Thanksgiving table with his sister, Sage We had our first therapy session and have been working every day on our exercises. BTW, anyone able to travel to Tom's River in NJ I have a wonderful canine physical therapist to recommend!
So, deep breathes and good thoughts. We're moving forward now.
Mandy and Maverick
Maverick is a wonderful miniature australian shepard born with a malformation of the front right radius/ulna, amputation performed on 11/4/13 at 6 months old. Follow his story at mavericksjourney.tripawds.com.
Mandy, I'm so sorry to hear about Patrick. Brain cancer is such a tough disease, I"m sorry you had to go through that too, please accept my condolences.
When it comes to Maverick's amp, yep, it's hard to think the worst but if you stay pawsitive he will too. Keep those negative thoughts out of your head and think about how much better Maverick will feel once he's free of that bum leg and out of pain. Keep doing your homework about preparing for amputation and it'll help keep your mind off of things! How is he doing otherwise?
Meanwhile, if you'd like to put your recommendation for your rehab practitioner in our Veterinary Referrals forum I know someone will really appreciate it some day!
Hang in there, let us know how we can help ease your fears.

Mandy, first let me sah I know it hurts sooooo mich to not have yoir precious Patrick around. I also lost my beloved Hows Doody in December to a brain tumor. He was also an older fella I kow it's a tough deterioration to watch. And ow you're dealing with worries over Maverick too. I'm sorry, so very, very sorry.
Patrick i fused someof his wisdom ito Maverick...I have no doubt! He'll be watching over the little guy and I'm sure he's already lectured him on taki git easy.....and how to get treats with a "look" or tummy rubsith a tail wag!
Your Maverick will recover so quickl and he will do so well! He has soooooo much going for him....you...Amgel Patrick...yoith...and NO lofe threatening disease! I kow one of that eases your worries, though.
Remember, we are here!! Yo are not doing this alone, okay? When you get overwhelmed with worry, we are here. When Maverick has his first pee and first poop after surgery, we are here to celebrate too,
And we are here to wrap our arms around you and comfort you as you grieve for your beloved Patrick...we grieve withyou. We know he surrou ds you with a lofetime of memories and a love that can never be taken away.
We would love to see a picture of Patrick when you fee like it. And, of course, Maverick and Sage.
As far as Tha ksgiving, you better keep that turkey out of Maverick's reach......he might just jump up on tne tale and gobble that bird up!
Hugs to all!

Thanks, all. As soon as I figure out how to put in a picture I'll have to post some now that it doesn't hurt so much to look at them. Maverick is doing wonderful and only has two classes left before he tests for his AKC Puppy Star certificate. Obviously his disability doesn't slow him down since I've been patching up holes in the backyard all month. I know for sure that Pat taught his patented 'look' to Maverick before he went, lol.
I'll definitely post in the referral forum for my PT. Maverick actually got to meet another Tripaw before his session, a beautiful Great Dane.
I'm located in Jackson on the Howell/Lakewood side. I go to Garden State Veterinary Specialists in Tinton Falls for Maverick's orthopedic issues . I worked there for 4 years and still have friends there so I can fully vouch for their expertise and care behind the scenes.
