Hey Wyatt
We use a combo of keeping the undergrowth cut back and garlic oil spray around the dog yard and haven't had any tick issues in the 18 years we have lived in the CO foothills. Our trouble is with the black flies that like to eat ears. We use a horse product based of cedar oil to spray right on their ears.

I dunno guys, they are really, really bad here in Red Feather. I think it's because of the ton of water we have around right now. Should be a fun mosquito season too!

Wyatt,

I have not used Scalibor yet so I can't comment on side effects or safety.  Frontline works well but the ticks do take 1-2 days to die and fall off.  I never liked the oil spot that was left on the hair coat with Frontline but the product is waterproof.  If I had a cancer dog I would probably choose Frontline over a collar.  Dogs with a strong immune system living in tick infested areas should be able to handle the collars okay but I do know that some people are turned off by the odor.  Have any of our Southern tripawds tried the Scalibor collar yet?

Here is information from PetCareChoice.com about Scalibor flea and tick prevevention bands for dogs:

And it looks like Only Natural Pet Store carries their own branded version, or something similar:

Oops!  I said something wrong earlier.  The Advantage Multi is safe for dogs and cats and treats fleas and internal parasites but not ticks.  It is the Advantix made by the same company that contains permethrins to fight ticks that can kill cats.

Sorry for the confusion,

Pam

SPOTTED: First tick of the season here in central cal! Time to do something about it since her trifexis fights every other nasty thing except ticks!!! I am a bit paranoid about ticks ever since I found two "chilling out" on me earlier this year, thankfully not sinking their faces into my skin. Now to thoroughly comb Chloe… I am sure I am going to imagine creepy crawlies on me all night long…

Just a reminder to you all out there, protect your pets!

P.S.  Also looking into ways to keep ticks AWAY from our yard.  Going to give this a shot, since it has good reviews!  Apparently ticks, mosquitos and other pests don't like garlic and this is a natural way to get them to avoid areas sprayed with the stuff.  Will let you know how it works!

Chloe became a rear amp tripawd on 7-29-10. Another tumor was removed on front leg 2-20-14. Found 3rd tumor on neck 2-2015, but she's still kicking cancer's butt at age 14. Chloe's blog
