This is my usual Monday morning of waking up, and writing about something I cannot get off my mind.......I have a question, for anyone that may know or have read somewhere along the way of our canine cancer journeys. As you may know by now, my Polly, as well as her sister, my Maggie before her, both died of a particularly evil cancer, being hemangiosarcoma. Ever since Maggie died from this, I have done an internet search trying to find any and every Veterinary college or university, etc., studying this disease and have not found very many. What I have been able to find and read, is that this is a very difficult cancer to study due to the nature of it, and not much has been accomplished by studies. I have donated to many cancer research organizations, many human ones, and a few canine ones, but cannot find any specific organization primarily studying canine hemangiosarcoma. I am way more than happy, donating to Morris Institute, as they are primarily focusing on awful osteosarcomas, and I obviously have many friends here and personally who are fighting, and have tried to fight this terrible cancer with their beloved dogs. And down the road, I may encounter this crappy cancer myself, in one of my dogs. My question is, does anyone out there know of any reliable studies being done of hemangiosarcoma, that I can read about, and possibly donate to? This is something that is very close to my heart, (and close to completely breaking it) and I just cannot find very much in the way of successful research.
Truly hoping for all cancer cures soon......
Love,
Bonnie & Angel Polly
AWE Bonnie ... I know ... I feel like the red-headed step-child in this battle as well since there isn't much about Hemangioscarcoma and it's such a deadly one ... knowing your two struggles with this and Shelby's favorite nurse losing her dog and Shelby, also fighting it ... I would LOVE to see better treatment/research being done. I also feel like, while I love our vets and they are excellence in care, they automatically assumed Shelby had bone cancer and when they couldn't find that, they didn't probe further. True, I could have demanded that leg off then which possibly could have found the cancer that was still in an early stage but I was so happy that the leg was able to be plated and fixed.
Shelby has also always had moles, lumps, etc on her body - we had one removed and it was benign ... so we all figured it was aging ... again, now I look at those lumps and wonder if they are little tumors and I hate them all.
It's a vicious cancer... keep us posted if you find a resource!
Love to you!

Our story: Broke rear leg in June 2013 - non-conclusive results for cancer so leg was plated and pinned. Enlarged spleen in September 2013 and had it removed and was diagnosed with Hemangiosarcoma and started chemotherapy. Became a Tripawd January 8th, 2014 and definitive Hemangiosarcoma diagnosis. Three major surgeries in 7 months and Shelby took them all like a champ only to lose her battle to cancer in her brain. We had 8 amazing extra months together and no regrets. #shelbystrong #loveofmylife
Great question. While I don't know of any organizations just focused on this disease, I do know that many academic researchers are dedicated to studying it, but with little fanfare. Groups like Morris fund many hemangio studies like these that are being conducted at universities throughout the world (Morris funds all types of cancer and animal health studies).
What would be great is if a wealthy donor or groups of donors gave someone like Morris a ton of money to dedicate only to hemangio studies, now that would be cool.

Thank you Alison, you surely know what I am feeling.......and thank you Jerry, I have read everything I possibly can about Morris Foundation, and am really impressed with the organization. I have donated to them recently, and I am happy they do some research on soft tissue cancers, as well as osteosarcomas. I think hemangiosarcoma is just one of those really nasty cancers, not quite a blood cancer, but an extremely aggressive blood vessel cancer that is very difficult to study. I will continue to keep hope for any and all break-throughs regarding cancers.
Much thanks, <3

Thats what took my Jake too. It came out of nowhere and unfortunately I'm noticing more dogs on here that survive one cancer only to end up with this horrible one.
The Canine Health Foundation states that: "Fifteen grants to study hemangiosarcoma have been funded by CHF to the tune of $1.3 million."
Here is a link to some of the grants:

I'm sure there are more on CHF or the National Canine Cancer Foundations websites.

Thanks for the info Elizabeth, and so sorry you lost sweet blue-eyed Jake to this cruel cancer....I did not know that.
About these links...... I did find them quite awhile ago and had some hope, but most of these listed are either older closed studies, and the website for Canine Health Foundation has not been updated for over a year. I also cannot seem to find any legitimate, active studies with this foundation or verification of current dates.
I think I will probably just put my trust in Morris Foundation, and if I am directed to any studies at Veterinary colleges by my vet.
Thanks again to everyone,
Bonnie & Angel Polly
