I am on Dr Becker's emailing list. I received this and thought these were awesome tips for remembering our new/current pets. I am lucky enough my mom thought of getting some of Sassy's ear fur the day she crossed the bridge because they had to shave the inside to get her O2 level at the vet otherwise I wouldn't have any of her velvet fur.
Please think about doing some of these things. I know I am planning on doing some of them with Snickers.
I am almost ready to get a firebox to put my back up drive in it with all my pictures on my computer that way I will still have them if there is ever a fire.
hugs

When you lose a beloved pet, will you have more than memories of your time together?
Few things in life are as special and memorable as welcoming a new four-legged family member into your heart and home.
Whether you got your pet from a shelter or rescue group, off the streets, from a breeder, or from a friend or family member, think about it: Of all the pets you’ve had in your life, how many times have you regretted bringing one into your family? That’s right. Regrets on getting a dog or cat are about as rare as jackalope sightings.
I’ve been a veterinarian for 34 years, and a lifetime pet lover. My earliest memory is holding onto the back fur of a working cattle dog, an Australian Shepherd named Shep, as I learned to walk at our Southern Idaho ranch.
How I wish I had more than just wispy memories of Shep! That's why I want you to “begin with the end in mind” when you get a new pet. A decade or decades from now, what will you wish you had to remind you of this special bond you shared?
I’ve been telling pet owners for over three decades to do some or all of the following:
Take a snippet of hair and put in a small plastic bag. Puppy hair is often a different color and consistency than an adult coat.
Consider saving some of your pet's baby teeth.
Use a stamp pad and get a "pawtograph" on a sturdy piece of paper.. Do this at different life stages, on the same piece of paper, and label appropriately.
Save your pet’s first toy. It doesn’t matter if it’s a decapitated vinyl toy, shredded plush plaything, or a dried slobber-slick tennis ball. It will be a totem of many warm memories of time spent together.
Save photos. I like to have pictures of important milestones: bringing the pet home, first days, special events like pet’s birthday paw-ty, opening presents on a holiday), or on vacation with you.
When you have to make the difficult decision to say goodbye to a beloved pet, those mementos will bring you the warmest of memories.

These are great tips, Michelle! I so wish I had more of Shelby's fur (even though Sally did suggest I cut a locket when she passed).
I do have several of Shelby's special toys stashed away - those will never go to another dog. They STILL smell and remind me of my girl.
I didn't photograph Shelby as much when she was younger (perhaps it was because it was before the digital age) but I am trying to do so with Jasper.
Shelby and I did have the holidays though and I have ALL her Santa photos saved. And her clothes. Shelby had so many outfits, tiaras, Christmas dresses ... I don't know yet what I will do with or for Jasper for Christmas ... I suspect we will do Santa photos but I am not sure it will ever be as fun or the same. I think 'dressing a dog up' was mine and Shelby's thing.
There are definitely certain things that will remain special and preserved for me and my 'heart' dog but I am trying hard to document the many firsts with Jasper!

Our story: Broke rear leg in June 2013 - non-conclusive results for cancer so leg was plated and pinned. Enlarged spleen in September 2013 and had it removed and was diagnosed with Hemangiosarcoma and started chemotherapy. Became a Tripawd January 8th, 2014 and definitive Hemangiosarcoma diagnosis. Three major surgeries in 7 months and Shelby took them all like a champ only to lose her battle to cancer in her brain. We had 8 amazing extra months together and no regrets. #shelbystrong #loveofmylife
I really liked these suggestions. Especially the one with taking a stamp pad and putting the pups pawprint on the same piece of paper as he grows. After Leland passed I went to a Things Remembered store and had a photo album engraved with his name and the dates of his life along with a couple of pawprints added in. I went through and printed off all the pictures I'd taken of him from puppyhood through his amputation so I can look back over his wonderful life.
I wish I had more pictures of our first pup Lucky but as Alison mentioned he was with us before digital cameras really came into use.
I will continue taking pictures of Lucian so I can remember his life journey as well.
Thanks for sharing these ideas to keep our beloved family members close to our heart once they've passed.

May you finally be healthy and running free at the Rainbow Bridge. Until we meet again my sweet boy!
Wow, I must be ahead of the game a bit here........I have saved fur from every Lab girl I have ever had, but will start taking some puppy fur as well (look out Pearl), I have at least one baby tooth from each, and even have one or two broken nails, and I always save that one favorite, special toy of theirs..........But there are so many more ideas and suggestions here, they are great!! Photos and videos are much easier to get now, but these other ideas are wonderful !!!
Thank you for sharing this, Michelle, you always post the most fantastic things!!
Love,

These are great ideas. The one regret I have is aside from the one from 2 Christmases ago and the one on my phone of coming home after his MRSA stay, I have no video of Ty. Sally, I love that you took so many of Hannah, what a precious keepsake! we got Ty in 2006( before digital pictures and phones with cameras on them, so maybe that explains it. I love the pawprint idea. I did a plaster of paris one of Ty when it became apparent that his time was getting short. He still had a bit of it in his paw cracks when he left for the bridge. I have a ziplock bag of his hair, his Christmas stocking, collar etc. in a special keepsake box. I also kept hair from my 11 year old Border Collie, he is still with me, but I just felt led to keep some. I have collars and some hair from my 2 previous pups who have been at the bridge a long time. I wish I still had Ty's Mr. Duck ( it was chewed beyond recognition and Chandler"s Lootie. I think it also became a victim of Ty's teething stage. At least I do have pictures of them with their favorite toys. Thanks for sharing this, I will be doing some of these with Chandler and Lucy. Love, Lori and TY
TY GUY, Best Black Lab ever! Diagnosed and had amp in January, 2014. Kicked MRSA's butt. Earned his angel wings on April 16, 2014. Run Free my boy and don't forget a shoe. Ty is a proud member of the " April Angels". Ty sent us Daryl, a Tripawd rescue in Sept. of 2016. Daryl is 5 +or -. We are also Pawrents to Chandler, a Border Collie mix who is 15 and 1/2, Lucy, a Corgi who is 7, 2 minis, 2 horses, and a feisty cat named Zoe. Zoe had a non skeletal Osteosarcoma removed in July 2015. No Chemo, she was at least 16. She is going strong although she is now completely blind. She is now close to 20 and her hobbies are eating and sleeping in front of her personal heater.
Really nice Michelle! Thanks for posting.
Yeah, I've done a lot of "end of this life stuff"....lock of fur, a couple.of' pieces of popcorn, her M&M bag, dried deer poop, etc....
Hadn't thought about the lock of puppy hair, puppy pawprint, etc. I have saved Merry Myrtle's first pile of vomit.in a baggy.
And Lori, I have almost no pictures of Happy Hannah until just a few weeks before her am o utation and then, of course, thousands sfter the amputation...all on computer though.
Love to all!
Sally and Happy Hannah and Merry Myrtle too!
Tee Hee!!!!!! Just kidding about saving the deer poop and the vomit!!!!!!!
Did I "get cha'"?
Happy Hannah had a glorious additional bonus time of over one yr & two months after amp for osteo! She made me laugh everyday! Joined April's Angels after send off meal of steak, ice cream, M&Ms & deer poop!
OK I'm gonna cry just thinking about this, but it's so smart. I love Dr. Becker, thanks for sharing it.
