I've never even had a root canal! But then I've never fallen off a deck either!

I love big black dogs! If I got the okay from "Spirit Fortis" (and the wife ) I would bring this guy home in a heartbeat. Seriously though, I do believe the syndrome exist and I suppose the movie, The Omen, didn't help matters much. I've had 3 black/dark dogs and one black cat and all were sweethearts! Fear is not an instinct but rather a learned behaviour. We have to be taught to fear as we do to hate.
The poem was very very sad.
OMG Brett, he's awesome. Bob says he looks like he would eat you! You really like the BIG guys, don't you.

Knee jerk reaction. EEEK! Second reaction, he is beyond beautiful, he is truly gorgeous. Then, I like his eyes, they remind me of Sammy's light eyes that glow in the sun.
When I first saw Fortis I was scared too. I thought I would never want to meet him in a dark alley. Then I got to know him through Brett and Pattie and fell deep. He helped me understand my mastiff, who I was always a little afraid of. Now my mastiff Titan and I share cuddles and kisses, partly due to seeing Fortis and family react to each other.
Brett, there aren't too many people who would know how to handle a dog like him responsibly. If Fortis and Pattie are all for him Sammy, Titan, and I all say he would be one lucky guy to have a family like yours!
Is he a he, or a she?

I couldn't begin to say how special Sammy is to us. Living and laughing with and loving this wonderful boy is priceless.
Just wanted to share this great column about this very subject, from Dr. Nancy Kay....
"More on Colorblind Adoptions"
"Wow! What a terrific response I received following my recent blog post about colorblind adoptions. I discussed the fact that black colored dogs and cats tend to languish in shelter and rescue situations because they are less likely to be adopted. Thanks to all of you who took the time to respond with your terrific comments. Some of your stories about your own animals brought me to tears...."

Gayle, I wish it were just an urban legend......but I can tell you that it's true.
I might have mentioned that I'm pretty immersed in rescue with an emphasis on golden and labrador retrievers. Both last summer and this summer, the shelter I *troll* for those breeds has had a ridiculous amount of black dogs.....and the bigger, the worse. At one point alone, there were SEVEN beautiful black labs at the shelter....all heartworm negative, and all under the age of 2.
Not a one of them was adopted from the shelter and thankfully, I was able to get them all out and into homes but it wasn't before a lot of lost sleep worrying about them.
Right now, there is a 3 month old black lab puppy sitting at the shelter............unbelievable.
That is unbelievable. Who could resist a face like this? This is Sam at 3 months. That could be her languishing in a shelter. Bless you Pam for the work you do!

TATE ~ Forever in our hearts.
Oh look at that face...........................sigh.
And get this......there was recently a 9 month old black lab/golden retriever mix who had been hit by a car and was seriously injured. Thankfully got her out, raised funds and got her into a WONDERFUL foster home who will (I hope) adopt her. She looks like a flat coat retriever with her long hair and beautiful feathering.
And not one person was interested in her.
It sucks.
Black dogs rock.............had a black kitty named Sammy who I rescued from a sanctuary that was closing. I told them to give me the one that had the least chance of being adopted. Sammy was 11 years old, VERY scary looking....one malformed ear from his early years as an intact Tom cat.....he looked like he'd just as soon beat the crap out of you as look at you. But he had the most gentle spirit and I was blessed with 4 years with him until I had to help him on his journey home to the Bridge last October.
Wow......tears are flowing. Miss you Sammy Baker Davis, Jr......(sorry, kinda got off topic there)
