i've read about this before, but this article gives a good deal of info on black dog syndrome. as a sister to a tripawd who happens to be a 'big black dog', it's just unfathomable to me that this exists, but i know by looking at the shelters around here it does. any thoughts from any other folks??? i know we have many other tripawds that are 'big black dogs' - they all seem like little buddhas to us!!!

I don't mean to hijack this thread, but I had thought that you might be talking about this when I saw the name of the thread…
My dog has black fur, but pink skin. After his amputation, some parts of his skin where he had been shaved changed from pink to dark (almost black) in color. Our vet said that sometimes shaving will cause pigment to surface and darken the skin. Has anyone else seen this?
Back to the original topic…
A few years ago when I took my black dog hiking (off leash) in Colorado, I put a bandana on him. I read somewhere that a bandana around your dog's neck will make him look "cuter" and might make other hikers less likely to be afraid of him. Don't know if it made a difference, but he sure was cute with his bandana on 🙂
(The article I read wasn't about hikers being afraid of black dogs, just dogs in general.)
I've actually seen this in action! I have two black dogs and one blonde. People on the street will walk right up to the Moose and get in her face. And she's the only one of my dogs that has bitten people (me, my husband, the vet, vet techs, etc.) or is aggressive with her food. I have to tell people to back off from her and she's got a red flag on her chart at the vet. Same with my dog, Shasta, who was also a blonde. She would growl at the neighborhood children because they made her nervous, and I would have to warn them to stay out of her face. My black dogs, though, people shy away from, move to the other side of the street, etc. when they see us coming. Go figure! I mean Zephyr is a doofus thunderbutt, and she's more likely to knock you over cuz her brakes don't work than anything else.
Here's a website for black dog adoptions that talks about this syndrome. I don't get it! I personally prefer the black ones, especially if they have lighter colors around their eyes and mouth. I think it gives them tons of personality.

Ohh I know, it's so sad. This happens with kitties too.
People were never afraid of me...
But when they see Wyatt Ray , they make a wide path
Of course, maybe it's because he's a MANIAC but sometimes my Mom thinks it's because of his dark mug.
Pawsonally we think black dawgs are cool!

I SOOO know what you mean! I also read somewhere that because their facial expressions are harder to see people can't seem to get the idea that they are friendly, even when they stand there wagging their tail so hard their butts wiggle.
I also personally think black is the best color of dogs for clothing. I don't often wear light color clothes because I am in the northwest and if I am with my light haired boy it shows all over my clothes when we are out together, but with Sammy, you don't see a thing and his hair is 3 times longer!
All I know is the rescue group I deal with is called Old Dog Haven in Washington and they have tons of old black labs. So so so sad.

I couldn't begin to say how special Sammy is to us. Living and laughing with and loving this wonderful boy is priceless.
I only have black dogs, and Tate's my first so I can't say. But here's another black dog rescue: http://www.blac.....ope.org/ (Don't read the poem, it's just too sad.)
BTW, Tate's skin is black. What kind of dog do you have, mck025?

Dante had three strikes against him at the shelter - he's a pitbull, he's 'special needs' and he's black. They said because of it all combined together, not even one person had expressed interest in him, and they were having difficulty adopting out his siblings because they were black. It's very rare that you walk into a shelter and find 12 week old puppies still there who had been there since they were 5 weeks old - no one wanted them, but their loss was our gain as we ended up with two of them! We also have an all black cat, too!
Way to go munko! Thanks for being there for Dante.

We used to have a black dog, too. When we were out with both Rumbles and Punch, people would comment that Punch "looked mean", ask "does she bite" and ask me "is that a pitbull". I always thought it was weird, but she had a very direct way of looking at people, so I assumed that was the 'problem'. I didn't hear of this black dog syndrome before, but now that I've read this, I guess that explains things a bit.
And just for the record, she was a big sweet marshmallow. 🙂
tatespeeps, Percy is a shepherd mix. He is black with some tan streaks on his legs and face, but he has a white undercoat and pink skin. A patch of the skin on his belly that was shaved for his amputation changed from light pink to various dark shades that are almost black after the amputation.
I've got a (non-tripawd) black shepherd/husky mix, and my mom has a big black newf, and we saw this exact problem in the shelters when we adopted our dogs. Huge litters of black puppies as sweet as can be, but nobody wanted to give them forever homes!
Luckily, both dogs are completely goofy and make good first impressions, so I'd like to think that they're good ambassadors 🙂

I feel bad because I don't have a black dog NOW. Even though I've always had a black dog. (usually a chow)
I did get a black puppy pit mix for Comet before Rocket but had to give him back after 24 hours since he was aggressive to Comet. (in fairness, Comet was aggressive to him and he wasn't submissive and reacted back with aggression)
I always look at gender first and personality second. A smaller size only played a factor because of Comet being defenseless after losing Rugby, a shepherd mix.
Comet - 1999 to 2011
She departed us unexpectedly January 23, 2011 at the age of 12 1/2.
She was born with a deformed front leg and a tripawd all of her life.
What a smile that boy had! Adorable.
