Hi everyone.
You might remember that my sweet Ivan Mastiff died a few weeks ago after a good college affort to rebound from his "foster" home where he was terribly underweight, wormy, had pressure sores, and a slew of other issues.
When I picked him up, ticks were blowing up on him overnight, about 30 in all, and fleas, too. He had three flea baths before he could even come indoors - that's how terribly infested with external parasites he was.
I couldn't give him oral or topical flea control medicine because he was to weak to risk the chemicals. Instead, I used a citrus extract, which seemed to work very well. If he continued to carry fleas, they were very few, because I massaged and examined his fur every night.
He's been gone a few weeks now, but suddenly, I notice a flea jump on me about once a day! What the heck? It's completely grossing me out. How are fleas surviving without a host? Please don't tell me that I am the host and need a flea bath. Where are they coming from? Even as I sat here and wrote this, two jumped on me. UGH!
You know I read somewhere that only a small percentage of fleas actually live on a dog, the major infestation occurs at the household level and they reproduce there, without a host. Sorry! This article, "The Flea Dilemma for Cancer Dogs" has a lot of good info & links to tips on de-fleaing your home.
How are you doing otherwise? Sorry we missed you in the chat tonight.

Thanks for the reply Jerry.
AND, GROSS!
I'm doing ok, off and on. It's still pretty painful. Ivan's 'rescue' has contacted a few times, saying all sorts of ridiculous things, everything from I caused his death, to I should have sent him back to them, to the vet here in this state looks like it has terrible reviews online, and so it's their fault he died. It's just very dumb.
I'll check out the flea recource, thank you.
I'm sorry! Try the diatamaceous earth (sp?), it's supposed to be very, very safe. Messy, but safe.
Never forget you did right by Ivan, he knew love for a little bit of his life, that's all that matters. That stinks about the so-called rescue treating you like crap. It's so sad that some groups lose sight of what's really important in rescue, which is helping animals find homes instead of feeding egos by pointing fingers. Very dumb indeed.
Hang in there.
