Hi, I didn't know where to post this - still learning the ins and outs of the forums! Shelby has been home for 2 weeks today (17 days post-amp) and she stinks to high heaven! Actually, she is less stinky than when I brought her home but perhaps her smell is growing on me. I should have given her a bath BEFORE her surgery but I ran out of time and then her leg was so painful, it seemed mean to do.
Shelby is a short-haired dog; I usually take her to a 'do-it yourself' place where she can stand and I don't break my back washing her. My concern now, obviously, is that she feels unstable on 3 legs and with water, she might slip or something. Any suggestions on the best way to bathe your new tripawd? I can wait a bit longer OR perhaps give her a sponge bath with a wet rag.
BTW - Shelby hates baths, hates the water for the most part and since she already seems annoyed with me, this might not be the best idea this weekend but eventually I will need to wash her again so looking for some tips! Thank you!

Our story: Broke rear leg in June 2013 - non-conclusive results for cancer so leg was plated and pinned. Enlarged spleen in September 2013 and had it removed and was diagnosed with Hemangiosarcoma and started chemotherapy. Became a Tripawd January 8th, 2014 and definitive Hemangiosarcoma diagnosis. Three major surgeries in 7 months and Shelby took them all like a champ only to lose her battle to cancer in her brain. We had 8 amazing extra months together and no regrets. #shelbystrong #loveofmylife
Okay, my 2¢ NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
And Shelby's in tne bathroom saying, "THANK YOU SALLY"
I say that mainly because it stresses her, and right now she needs to be as strees-free as possible. And snce she's only jad her stitches ojt a couple of days, you may want to put it off fr that reason too.
They do make "pet grooming wipes" and many are made strictly from natural ingredients. You don't want anything with alcohol in it.
Hey, a thought......when you do bathe her, do it in our tub in the bathroom and maybe she'll start hating being in there
Happy Hannah had a glorious additional bonus time of over one yr & two months after amp for osteo! She made me laugh everyday! Joined April's Angels after send off meal of steak, ice cream, M&Ms & deer poop!
I used to use one of those tubs in the pet food stores too. I could put both pug girls in together and the tub was deep enough that they couldn't get out on their own. I did have an advantage that both pugs liked to go in the water, they didn't really like baths but it didn't freak them out.
The first time I tried after Maggie's amp I brought a small non-skid mat. But with two dogs in the tub that didn't work, and Mag didn't like the feel of it or something and preferred the tub. As I recall there was some amount of non-skid coating in the tub so it wasn't that slippery. You could go scout the place you want to use and check how slippery the tubs are. Anyway, Mag would sit while I worked on Tani. I would wash all I could of Mag with her sitting, then hold her up with a hand under her belly so she didn't fall while I did the back end. Same procedure for rinsing. They would both get manic when they were done- they would have run up and down the isles of the store if I let them so I didn't even need to reward them when they were done.
If Shelby is the type that flails in the tub, or tries to jump out you might want to await until she is stronger and more confident. And a second person is helpful if you have someone to help, but I usually washed the two pugs by myself.

P.s.- Sally you crack me up!

Sally - Shelby is definitely saying "thank you auntie sally right now" - I agree and I didn't even think of the stress factor since she's been having a good couple of days. Sadly, my bathtub is not an option for us since it would involve me getting in there and I am not sure I am ready to take our relationship to that level! (lol). The way it's set up, the sink is right up next to it so I can't get to the water AND Shelby.
And that is HILARIOUS - true - maybe that would give her a reason to dislike my bathroom! 🙂
She would probably do OK in one of those places but she does tend to 'move' and is still unstable. I'll give it another couple weeks. She actually smells less offensive w/her stitches out and I can use baby wipes on her for a quick sponge bath thing!

You're doing fine, it's fine to post this here.
I agree, as stress-free as possible right now is the best thing for her. Have you considered a dry shampoo? This stuff is really nice:

Well, well, well... guess who really needs a bath now!?! Yup! My girl is definitely beyond 'ripe' (and I want her to feel soft and silky again like she always does post bath) ... one of her vets suggested that if I am really that worried that I take a bath with her (that might be crossing some boundaries) and it really is a matter of keeping her 100% safe where I could 'hold' her w/my legs while I washed her. But I worry about her getting all spazzy post-bath (you know how some dogs like to run around and roll and get the clean scent OFF them)?
Maybe going with the dry shampoo is really best for Shelby. Just curious if any other Tripawd pawrents have bathed their dogs.
Also, eventually I think we will need to clip the toenails - I assume the vets know how to do that w/out injuring her? Shelby HATES getting a pedicure - even when she had 4 legs she would scream like a banshee - but I suspect now she would be even more vulnerable. She has always been odd about people touching her feet (thankfully, she lets me do it but I have not and never will clip her nails). But I guess they would have to hold them on their back because she can't really balance on 2 legs... ahhhh... the grooming needs of an LA pooch!

I used to bathe Willow all the time. I think she was a little bigger than Shelby...Willow was 50 lbs. (I bathe Seven too, but we go in the walk-in shower together). I would put a towel on the bottom of the bathtub to help keep her from slipping...for some reason the no skid mats never stayed flat for me :-). It's easier with an extra person. Do you have a friend who can help? Or maybe a huge oversized kitchen sink that she will fit in? I would just pick Willow up and put her in the tub and do a quick but thorough job. You don't actually have to "bathe" with her...you're really doing a shower. Does your tub have a shower head with hose? You just keep it low and try to keep the water off of yourself. Good Luck!
I don't think you'd be happy with the dry shampoo...it never really gets them clean and the powder leaves a kind of residue.
I always have nails done at the vet...they're better at it and if they do nick them they can cauterize it right away.
Hugs,
Carol
Libby's nails were clipped by the vet this week. She's a front amp so I supported the front end while the vet clipped the rear toenails. She was lying down when the front paw was clipped.
We don't have to bathe Libby more than about once a year. She has just never smelled. Sammie is another story (P.U.!) We bathed Libby last summer, outside. We did it pretty quickly so she didn't have to stand in one spot too long. I giggled at the suggestion you bathe with Shelby. Crossing boundaries, indeed! haha
Amy & Libby
Liberty (Libby) was diagnosed with OSA on 1-22-13. Right front amputation on 1-31-13. No IV Chemo. Metronomic Therapy started 2-19-13 along with supplements and some home cooking. Lungs clear until 1-06-14. She's still her happy, hoppy, bossy self. Living the dog life to the fullest and a proud Winter Warrior. :) RIP my Libby 4-21-03 to 3-19-14
There are more people who bathe with their dogs than we can imagine I'm sure! I don't see why not, I'm sure she wants to feel better too.
As for pawdicures, here's how we do Wyatt Ray 's nails. Some people say it looks like we're waterboarding him but I can assure you he is really calm with these contraptions:

Shelby is 23.4 pounds so yes, smaller - the "do-it-yourself" places have tubs like an oversized kitchen sink but I just worry that she will get injured in there if I am not actually in with her. I have a tub that I would have to get in w/her since I can't reach the water (my sink is right up next to it so not built for washing a dog or child if I had one of those). SO yup... thinking the option is to put on my suit and get in there w/her and sit! It's just me but I think I can handle it alone. And no, there will not be photos of that!
@ Amy - the vet said they would do for her next time we go .. I just hear clicky/click and worry they are too long. Shelby has eaten food out of my mouth before (I was leaning over her w/a cheese stick trying to put her leash on and she took it out of my mouth "Lady and the Tramp" style) so showering together will just solidify our already extremely close relationship. Fun weekend project for us since it will be warm and she can 'dry' completely outside!

Shelby definitely is always muzzled when they clip her nails. It's the only time she's ever bit anyone - at Petco, nonetheless, and I did warn them but when you look at her sweet face, you would have no clue she would go ballistic on you if you touched her feet. Must be something from her past that freaks her out about that. It took years for her to let me touch them. Love that tongue peaking through....
