What a great day! We took Sophie and Atlas to the lake today. We LOVE our Tripawd Float Coat ! its PERFECT!!!!
A special thanks to Park Ranger Dan. When i went to survey our favorite spot on the lake with an easy level access to the water, on the opposite side of lake, away from all the visitors and crowds, i saw they had installed gates and we could no longer access. I went to speak with the park ranger this morning, told him we lived in the neighborhood, are not tourist, showing pics of Atlas, telling his story and explaining our wish for privacy and need for rehabilitative swimming. Without hesitation he gave me the code for the gate and told me just to call each time before we went so they would know we were there. He must be a dog lover. I could have kissed him!

So here is the big guy first time out since amp. He has shown us that he is aware he is compromised and is more cautious about things these days, but he was jumping in in no time. Only thing, we have definitely got to build up his stamina, he was totally exhausted after just 5 minutes and could barely keep his back end up. But he also expends all of his energy at the house bounding and hopping with sooooooo much excitement when he knows we're going somewhere. Marc says we have to get more sneaky so he can save all that energy for swimming.

Thanks to the nice Park Ranger, we plan on going 2 times a week and taking it at Atlas' pace. We're not running a race, we are building core strength. Not to mention, just having fun living life. This is at the end of our swim and he was pooped, I'll film the beginning next time out.

Two very happy pups after swimming today...

We forgot to turn a/c off, so it was very chilly coming home all wet, but the kids were quick to take a nap with their blankies....

Oh, Atlas...you big galoot! You brought tears to my eyes. You just show those doubters who say you won't be able to swim.

How I wish we had a lake like that and such a wonderful ranger near where we live. I imagine we would be there every day. Give Atlas a high five (or is that a high four with dogs?) from Murphy.

Murphy and Kathi

Murphy is a five year old Lab/Chessie cross. He was hit by a car on 10/29/12 and became a Tripawd on 11/24/12. On 2/5/13, he had a total hip replacement on his remaining back leg. He has absolutely no idea that he has only three legs!

UPDATE: Murphy lived his life to the fullest, right up until an aggressive bone lesion took him across the Rainbow Bridge on April 9, 2015 and he gained his membership in the April Angels. Run free, my love. You deserve it!

That was soooooo sweet! Yeah, I'm all gooose bumply over here!

Love ow, when yo wnet in, he just stayed back and watched! Nah, you go ahead mom, I'll just stay here and watch!

When he's ready to get out, he looks like a small horse just "jumping" his wayout of the water!

That's wonderful that Ranger Dan should such compassion. Of course, omce you see the Mighty Atlas, how could you not?
So Sophie's not a swimmer?

Patricia, that picture of them with their blankies....OMD....soooooo cute! Somehow you have to use that picture "somewhere"! A Christmas card or something? ?hat is just so adoravle! They really are best of pals and it shows
in all their photos. Looking at how Atlas "sits" in the car is a great example of how he doesn't need that "spare" leg for anything!

Good luck on being"sneaky" so they won't know ahead of time they're going to the lake! Isn't it amazing how they even kow almost before you do whe it's "ride in the car time"!

It was so uplifting to read your post and to see the "miracle Mighty Atlas! He is a mirale dog....he really is!! Such an inspiration for ALL dogs....but especially te big guys with "additional challenges"

I feel very privileged to be on this joirney with yo and your pack:-) :-)

Much love to all...Marc and Dan included!

Saly and Napy Hannah

Happy Hannah had a glorious additional bonus time of over one yr & two months after amp for osteo! She made me laugh everyday! Joined April's Angels after send off meal of steak, ice cream, M&Ms & deer poop!

I'm ashamed to say, it was the first time Sophie has seen a body of water. Terrible cause she's 3 1/2! She is very stubborn so is worrisome off leash and has never liked riding in the van. She trembles and gets so frightened. Which is so weird because she's always had steady Eddie Atlas right there with her showing everything is ok and no need to panic. Nope, when a big 18 wheeler goes past she freaks out. But I have worked with her for the past six months on come when called and we feel pretty confident with that now and she was the most obedient ever yesterday. Danes usually hit maturity around 3 years of age and she's settling in to be a nice girl now, not so challenging as her puppy self. Funny because we made the decision to get another Dane because Atlas was the best most incredibly well behaved dog we've ever had. HAHAHAHA!

Anyway, we were so disappointed we didn't have the camera on Sophie yesterday because she stood knee deep in the water and we coaxed and called her and she just stood there for the longest time just staring out, then BAM! She did this huge frog jump with all four feet straight up and towards us. Was the funniest thing I've ever seen! When we finally carried her out to deeper water poor thing went under and it freaked her out, she splashed her way back to shore in a hurry. But she waded back out again so obviously it wasn't enough to deter her. So I borrowed Atlas' Float Coat and took her out to deep water and helped her learn to keep those big paws under the water so as not to splash water in her own face. Practice makes perfect and shes going with us every time so I'm sure before we know it she'll be a champion swimmer!

Hey Sophie, your brudda can show you how to swim. I hated water too at first, but now I like it. Some dogs showed me water was fun when I was 2 years old, and after that I started swimming a lot. I think you'll dig it too, just wait!
