I just do not know what to do with Lucian.  He's driving me CRAZY with finding and eating kitty poo in the yard!!!!ughughughugh

We do not own any cats but it seems like our fenced in 4 acres of land has become a kitty litter box.  And Lucian just LOVES finding and eating himself some kitty poop.  Leland did not have this nasty habit...thank heavens.  I even went to PetSmart and checked out the pills that are supposed to curb poop eating in dogs.  Well they only work if you're feeding these pills to the animal whose poop is being eaten so that it makes their poop taste bad (how could it taste any worse...way-confused).  So this solution doesn't really help me because it's not like I can shove these pills down the throats of stray cats in our yard.

It just seriously annoys me how people have pets (might as well just say animals because they're not treated as pets) and leave them outside to wander wherever they want and mess on anyone's property.  So now Lucian gets stuck on a dog leash sometimes because I don't feel like running him down to get him out of a pile of kitty poo he's found...plus he thinks it's some sort of game because I'm running at him and then he starts running circles around me.  I'm sure it's the darndest looking site if somebody was watching us.

Any suggestions on handling this WONDERFUL behavior of Lucian's??

Sahana and her Angel Leland

PS...Leland you need to stop having so much fun up there and let Lucian know this is a NASTY habit and to knock it off!way-cool

LMAO OVER HERE!!!! Merry Myrtle thinks cat poop is the Nectar of the goDs!!
She just loves eating it...and the fresher the better! I have to admit, it does sicken me! And they always want to kiss you right afterwards or wipe their chin on you! It makes me appreciate deer poop at lot more.

And being a "drop off center"for cats...don't even get me started!! Dogs are rewuired to be leashed or fenced...should apply to cats too!!!

This is picture of My Pal Myrtle after she'd had a big pile.....the slime doesn't show the "debris" dripping out of her mouth.

No, I have no solution either!

Wow Merry Myrtle....that must have been one TASTY pile of kitty poo judging by the length of that drool hanging from your lip!!

I can't say I've seen long pieces of slobber hanging from Lucian's lips but when he sniffs around bushes (cats have peed on because there's sections turning brown...mad) he just starts salivating and he reminds me of a leaky faucet that just drips and drips.  I have to get him out of the bushes so he stops dripping and before he finds a prize in there.

This pup is going to make my grey hairs come faster...I just know it!  Guess that will be good for my hair stylist but not so much for my wallet...winker

Sahana,

If you didn't have such a large yard I would say spray the poop with some pepper spray (you can even make that) or something that would make him drop it immediately. Maybe even spraying some poop nearby you know he will grab. He has to relearn that cat poop tastes bad. Unfortunately my dogs love horse poop and I have way too much of that to spray but it's not as gross as cat poop. Good luck.

That is actually a good idea!!!  Now when you say pepper spray are you referring to the canisters of pepper spray used for self defense or something else?  I'm actually a probation officer so I've been issued canisters of pepper spray and I have a couple I can use.  I can carry one with me when I let him out and the first sign of him finding a pile of poop I can spray it.  Just have to be careful the wind isn't blowing so it doesn't get in Lucian's or my eyes....that would not be funsad

To make something I would assume dissolving cayenne pepper in water...or maybe vinegar (that would definitely taste yucky!!) and putting it in a spray bottle.

Thanks for the suggestions!!!

Sahana,

I think I wouldn't use the canister of pepper spray, too strong and it may stay in his mouth and he would be too uncomfortable. I've googled all kinds of pepper sprays to keep bugs off my plants. It usually involves boiling jalapeno peppers and onions and adding cayenne flakes. And vinegar sounds like a good idea, just as long as it doesn't make him sick. Good Luck.

Oh that is incredibly vile. Shelby had a thing for litter boxes when we would visit places w/kitties ..."Kitty Yum Yums" we called it. So gross.....thankfully Jasper just wants to "get the kitty" not eat the kitty poop!

What about "Bitter Apple" spray? You can get it at Petsmart and is used to stop chewing on stuff... it is safe. If Jasper doesn't quit w/my stuff, I'll be picking some up for her! Our dogs growing up learned that way.

I don't get cats either ... so irresponsible if you ask me.

I would love to see video you doing the chase down though!! :-)  Good luck~!

Our story: Broke rear leg in June 2013 - non-conclusive results for cancer so leg was plated and pinned. Enlarged spleen in September 2013 and had it removed and was diagnosed with Hemangiosarcoma and started chemotherapy. Became a Tripawd January 8th, 2014 and definitive Hemangiosarcoma diagnosis. Three major surgeries in 7 months and Shelby took them all like a champ only to lose her battle to cancer in her brain. We had 8 amazing extra months together and no regrets. #shelbystrong #loveofmylife

Sorry but I have no suggestions for you.  Just thought I would share some of what my dogs have enjoyed over the years.  I never found a way to stop this type of behaviour in any of my dogs.  My Barney dog loved to feast out of the litter boxes.  If I hadn't seen him for a while I would usually find him hiding under the bed lolling around a nice ole cat t--d in his mouth.  Tripawd Daisy never cared for cat poop but she loves herself a good pile of goose or deer droppings.  My Mattie dog was what I called a "recycler".  I tried those pills on her to get her to stop but they didn't work.  At least she only liked her own and I would be sure to pick up after her right away.

Bitter Apple spray does work pretty well in detering dogs from chewing on things.  I used it alot when Daisy was a puppy to keep her from chewing the door moldings and water supply lines (I had her gated in the bathroom while house breaking her and she started gnawing on both).

Good luck!

Our new Golden Retriever puppy, Millie, LOVES the litter box!  I do not and will not ever understand it.  SO disgusting!  Your story brightened an otherwise gloomy day.  Thank you for sharing!!!clapclapclap

Betsy Golden and Angel, Eddy.  Eddy was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma 7-23-14, had a left rear amputation 8-07-14, had 3 rounds of carboplatin chemotherapy,  a small lung met was discovered in October, had 2 rounds of doxorubicin, and unfortunately more lung mets were discovered.  Eddy fought cancer valiantly and went to the Rainbow Bridge 1-6-15, at the age of 7 years and 359 days, just six days short of his 8th birthday.   Best Dog, Ever....you will never be forgotten.

Ah, yes...the ever-popular kitty treats.  I don't have any suggestions for stopping the snacking, either.  The neighborhood cats are fully aware that there is a cat chasing Tripawd in our back yard, so they conveniently leave their deposits in the front yard.  The neighbor just can't understand why they won't go into her garage and use their "perfectly good cat box".

For a while when Murphy was younger, he had a craving for Gus poop.  We stopped that by feeding Gus pumpkin with each meal.  I had read somewhere that it made poop unpalatable.  Myself, I find it pretty unpalatable anyway, but Murphy found it irresistible.

Penny, you had me remembering our last Golden, Jenny.  She loved horse apples.  Cow pies were pretty good, too.  The word around our house was that you didn't let Jenny kiss you if she had green lips.

Kathi and Murphy

Murphy is a five year old Lab/Chessie cross. He was hit by a car on 10/29/12 and became a Tripawd on 11/24/12. On 2/5/13, he had a total hip replacement on his remaining back leg. He has absolutely no idea that he has only three legs!

UPDATE: Murphy lived his life to the fullest, right up until an aggressive bone lesion took him across the Rainbow Bridge on April 9, 2015 and he gained his membership in the April Angels. Run free, my love. You deserve it!

Sorry- I read this this morning and have been giggling all day, it brought back funny Maggie memories.

Pug Maggie was a poop connoisseur when she was a puppy, she tried and liked cat, squirrel, rabbit and cow.

I took her to Montana when she was about 6 months old and her pallet was tempted with horse, moose and buffalo, all of which she liked, although she only tried horse once. We were staying with my uncle on his 10 acre property and one day she was in heaven in the pasture chest deep in horse apples.  I swear she at her weight in horse apples that day, and spent the next day pooping her weight in horse apples.  She didn't go back to the pasture the rest of the trip!

Luckily she only liked to eat cat poop when she was little.  She knew she could get a quite a reaction out of us so once in a while she would come in through the dog door with a cat 'cigar' hanging out of her mouth and dare us to get it away from her smiley

Karen

Tri-pug Maggie survived a 4.5 year mast cell cancer battle only to be lost to oral melanoma.

Sahana,

Sorry to say this, but it is in the code of ethics for canines to love and eat cat poop......The only dogs I have ever met in my entire life that did NOT, and do not do this, was my Polly and my current pup Pearl (and for that I am thankful).....every single dog I have had otherwise thought this was an awesome treat and would try to sneak into the litter box every chance they could, and outside if they could find any in my yard or gardens, it was chow time.

I truly have no advice, but I do agree with you, this is completely gross.

Love,

Bonnie & Angel Polly

My kitties, Mona and El,i are delighted that your dogs enjoy their poo. They've convinced their dog friends that the poo in their litter box is actually Almond Rocca. laughing

Alway happy to provide your doggies with treats,

Well, good luck trying to break that nasty habit. Our Wyatt Ray has chowed down on moose, deer, elk, rabbit, cow, horse and pig poop and no matter how much we scream at him or pull him away, he still goes right for it when given the chance. Since he's on leash the majority of the time it's up to us to make sure he doesn't dine on this scrumptious take out. He's gotten blocked up before from the horse poop, so we're super careful. Yeah I know, eeew!

Sahana, while this has to be one ofnthenmost disgusting topics started, it is, wit h out doubt, one of the most fun!!!

'Been laughing hysterically at the lengths our pups will go to to eat cat s**t...or any other critter s**t for that matter!!

Marla! Good to see you! And, as fate would have it, I also was owned by a dog named Barney, but it was his sister BISCUIT who ate her own poop! I love that we share ssme names with TWO dogs!! It's a soul thing!

MONA! ELI! Great response!way-cool
