Julian is allergic to the world including human dander but he does well on his allergy vaccine.  He currently gets an injection every 3 weeks but when the tree pollen comes out in the spring he needs it every 2 weeks.  I have also had luck with the Duoxo Calm shampoo which helps control his itching and he also takes fish oil.

Initially he needed antihistamines such as hydroxyzine daily but now he rarely needs any pills. He has been on the allergy vaccine for 4 years. I did feed him Royal Canin HP (a soy based diet) for a while but now he does well with Nature's Logic Lamb or Beef.

Thanks, Pam. I'll look for the Duoxo Calm shampoo. Julian sounds like he could be Ollie's twin. The only thing he didn't seem to be allergic to was cottonwoods (which is a bonus because our yard backs up to a poplar orchard) and black Willow, which I have never heard of.

Murphy is a five year old Lab/Chessie cross. He was hit by a car on 10/29/12 and became a Tripawd on 11/24/12. On 2/5/13, he had a total hip replacement on his remaining back leg. He has absolutely no idea that he has only three legs!

UPDATE: Murphy lived his life to the fullest, right up until an aggressive bone lesion took him across the Rainbow Bridge on April 9, 2015 and he gained his membership in the April Angels. Run free, my love. You deserve it!

This is a very, very interesting topic.

We've been trying to find out why Mel's face swells every spring, but so far, no luck.

And regarding floors, I have a co-worker here who lost his sweet fur-baby to formaldehyde poisoning from licking their wood floors. I tell ya, you just never know these days.

Harmony became a Tripawd on 10/21/14 (MCT). She left us way too soon on 11/1/14.

Others might fight this site interesting too. It was one of the better ones I found googling around.

Sally---does Frankie have soft stools? That was another thing that pointed the vet towards possible food allergies.

Active 10+ Pyr mix suddenly came up lame with ACL tear in left rear leg. Scheduled for a TPLO but final pre-op x-rays indicated a small suspicious area, possibly OSA, which could have caused the ACL tear. Surgeon opened the knee for TPLO but found soft bone. Biopsy came back positive for OSA. Became a Tripawd 9/18/14. Carbo6 with Cerenia and Fluids. Pain free and living in the moment. Crossed the Bridge on 7/12/15 after probable spread of cancer to her cervical spine. A whole lifetime of memories squeezed into 10 months. Here's her story: Eloise

Wow,and I thought I was the only one. Chandler is allergic to himself, I think. He is on another round of antibiotics to clear up a stubborn skin infection caused by chewing. We have had such a mild winter here so far, I think it is lasting longer. We have a special shampoo and now a spray. Daryl is chewing himself as I sit here typing. Oye! I know from the process of elimination, Chandler is allergic to wheat, corn and chicken, he has vomiting when he eats any of them. I blame myself for the corn, I used Honeycombs cereal to train him. The spray must be working, he is laying here not chewing himself for the first time in weeks.  I never thought of trees. We live in the woods. I have always suspected something outside though. We have all wood and tile in our house so that should help, but still they itch. Lori, Ty and Gang

TY GUY, Best Black Lab ever! Diagnosed  and had amp in January, 2014. Kicked MRSA's butt. Earned his angel wings on April 16, 2014. Run Free my boy and don't forget a shoe. Ty is a proud member of the " April Angels". Ty sent us Daryl, a Tripawd rescue in Sept. of 2016. Daryl is 5 +or -. We are also Pawrents to Chandler, a Border Collie mix who is 15 and 1/2, Lucy, a Corgi who is 7, 2 minis, 2 horses, and a feisty cat named Zoe. Zoe had a non skeletal Osteosarcoma removed in July 2015. No Chemo, she was at least 16. She is going strong although she is now completely blind. She is now close to 20 and her hobbies are eating and sleeping in front of her personal heater.

Thanks for that article, Denise. It certainly was much more in depth than most of the others I had seen. It looks like this vet and Ollie's are in agreement on treatment.

We did have a problem with Ollie having soft, walking poops when he was on the fish based diet. That resolved when he was on the elimination diet, and we have him on a food that is higher fiber now. The additional fiber in his food and the fiber from his dehydrated sweet potato treats has totally eliminated that problem. Nice, solid poop now. Such a lady-like topic....giggle!

Sometimes I think Bill and I talk about poo more than anything else. Size, shape, color---it all needs to be carefully described after each walk!

Seriously though, nice firm poos are so much easier on everyone. I get Nummy Tum Tum organic sweet potato on subscription from Amazon and that stuff is worth it's weight in gold as far as I'm concerned. And it makes his poop have this kind of sweet grassy smell, like a cow patty!

Yep! Every morning we get the poop report. Ollie usually only goes twice a day...once in the morning and once on his afternoon walk. Lots less poop pickup than when we had the two poop machines, even though he eats as much as the two of them did combined. He does maintain his weight very well at just about 85 pounds.

I buy organic sweet potatoes at the grocery store and dehydrate them at home. It takes most of the day to get them dry, though. Probably not a whole lot cheaper, either! We also dehydrated some elk that was left in the freezer for elk jerky. No salt or other seasonings in that, and we absolutely knew where it came from.

Cracking up over here!

Julian is allergic to the world!

Chandler is allergic to himself

And Bill and Denise bond over a candlelight dinner discussing the intricacies of his poop!

Ollie jas the walking poos!

Really, this is a great topic and a whole lot of valuable information is being shared. And Denise, I'll take note of Frankie's stool. So far, I hadn't.noticed it being particularly soft.

And Pam, that is just tragice about your coworker. Please extend our condolences to her. As far as Mel's mug swelling. My dog Bernie had the same issue off and on for many hears. If I recall, the vet ended up thinking it was an auto immune issue. It was awhile ago so I don't recall the specifics. It seems like I just ended up treating the symptoms of the swollen mug, and rear leg also sometimes, with short doses of prednisone (ugh) off and on for years

Happy Hannah had a glorious additional bonus time of over one yr & two months after amp for osteo! She made me laugh everyday! Joined April's Angels after send off meal of steak, ice cream, M&Ms & deer poop!
