My first dog was a standard poodle that was a second hand dog. He was an owner surrender and her reason was "he was too stupid to learn." Bear was one of the smartest dogs I've ever met - he must have played dumb to get out of that house. His owner reminded the entire staff of Cruella Deville. I got the flu 3 days after Bear came home and he stayed pressed against my side the entire time I was sick. After that, he was my constant shadow and we did everything together, even if I didn't want to! Sadly he died of lymphoma after just four short year. I never thought I would be able to love again.
The summer passed and as fall approached, my mother found a Scottie puppy that needed to be rehomed. The owners were expecting a baby and said that Otis was too active and too much to handle. ALL LIES. She was pregnant but they had border collies. As we talked, they mentioned that Otis was still not even paper trained at 9 months old. But we learned that wasn't the REAL reason they were getting rid of him. He was allergic to fleas and was constantly battling skin infections and being bald. Completely bald except for his beard, eyebrows, a not so modest skirt, and the tip of his tail. He often had some long back hair on his shoulders. He liked to lay in clay which gave him a decomposing color and appearance. He stopped traffic frequently as people weren't sure if I was walking a warthog or we had been in some sort of accident. My brother called him Pumba. Otis never had an accident in the house and was completely house broken. For a Scottie, he was incredibly mindful but still fiercely independent. As fall turned to winter, I realized I had waited too long to open my heart again but...if I hadn't then Otis probably wouldn't have found a home willing to deal with his nakedness and medical issues.
Cookie is out of mourning and my waves of grief are a lot less violent. It has only been a week and my heart still yearns to look into Tex's deep brown eyes again and rub that belly. Rich and I always go through our photographs and pick out our favorites of the time spent together. Twenty-Two months was not enough time together but the photos have brought a lot of comfort.
At first I thought I didn't want another greyhound or at least not a male as they tend to get cancer more than females. On Wednesday, we started to look again. Our normal place to get hounds didn't have anyone that fit our criteria. We're looking for someone a little older. Next weekend, we hope to go meet Gable Will I Am to see how he gets along with Cookie. They've already put a hold on him as he's been through a lot and we do sound like a perfect home for him.
He is another bounce back. His birthday is 12/24/2010. He's been in 2 homes before. He's a bigger boy, like Tex was. He was a good racer (unlike Tex but just like Cookie) but he is an alpha dog and he barks. Getting a third brindle in a row is a little hard on me but we'll see what happens. He's lighter than Tex was but darker than Nixon.
Cookie has the final say so keep your paws crossed that they like each other. Cookie is a submissive dog unless you push her too far and she will stand up for herself. She'd rather leave than start a fuss but I don't want to have her ears stitched back together again. I'm hoping he's a calm, quiet alpha like Nixon was.
I forgot to mention that Cookie has been by my side constantly since Sunday (after she spent Satuday cuddled with Tex's collar) including following me to the powder room. She says I'm boring and not as entertaining as she previously thought. She's lonely when I'm not home, even when Rich is home. We're doing lots of environmental enrichment but she says she needs another dog.
She's also doing something she's never done before. Tex was a master of one ear up and one ear half mast. Incredible cuteness. Cookie has always been both ears straight up or both ears half mast but most of the time, she keeps her ears pinned to her head. On Saturday, she suddenly started doing one ear up and and half mast, the same ear that Tex would do too.
HOLY CRAP!! I was just pm'n you and came back and saw this!!!!! So yes, now you have even more reason.....okay....I won't get into the pm...you know what I mean!
You are truly, truly living in sync with your Soul's purpose Ingrid!! You ABSOLUTELY, unequivocally are!!
And every single dog who is gifted to you by the Universe is ...hmm...is just meant to be!!! But you already know that! You are there gift....they are your gift....and yiu are our gift! What a privilege for us!!
I loved learning about Bear and "Warthog".....just more proof that you are so very, very special and you are gifted very special dog Souls!
It's as though your dogs transition after they have been loved and have been giving the opportunityto be the dogs they were born to be...even if it means they were bald, or had a horrid disease, or had three legs, or would get grumpy if they couldn't have their coffee. yeah, it was all worth it so they coukd be loved by you!
They know when they transition they are making room for another dog to receive your gift of love and understanding.
And now Nixon and Tex clearly were plotting again to send you a dog who needs your kindess so badly. I have a feeling Miss Cookie will make it work too. She's a pretty tuned gal.
Gabel Will I Am, your lick is about to change!! And btw, you are a very handsome boy!
Will anxiously wait for an update....and....shhh... hope to meet Gable "soon".
Lots of love our friend

Elizabeth, thank you for posting this picture of Nixon with his mole....just like all the good models have. 😉
We are just outside Greenville, SC in a hotel. Cookie realized we were on a roadtrip about 2 hours in. We normally travel to dog events like greyhounds in Gettysburg, Beach Bound Hounds, and tripawd parties! She cannot contain her excitement and made sleeping difficult. So far, no doggies. We meet Willy in 3 hours. I hope it is a match but I have some hesitation in my gut. Maybe it is nerves, I don't know.
OH. INGRID!!! ' CAN'T WAIT FOR THE UPDATE!!! 🙂 🙂 🙂
My guess isnthe feeling in yiur gut is excitement, and a bit of emotions too as the reason you are on the trip is because Tex transitioned. Just trust....like you have every single time a dog needed you. Cookie seems to already be anticipating a good match! 🙂 🙂
Lots of love!

Introducing Gable Will I Am:
We met in a local park so he wouldn't feel like he had to defend his turf. Cookie instantly asked him to play. He wasn't sure about that because he hasn't been around any greys that like to play! They were happy to sniff and walk together.
We went back to his foster home and hung out for several hours. He is social, outgoing, incredibly pushy, but not a real leader...yet! He would try to fill the void if no one steps up to lead but he doesn't have enough experience to do that. I can see why things failed in his previous homes as he was the first greyhound for each home. Pushy greyhounds need very firm rules at first - I'll actually use NILF on them for a few months to establish boundaries but soon plenty in in life is free. Kitty was(is) an incredibly pushy greyhound and I had to have multiple in house interventions at first because we just couldn't communicate in a meaningful way. As Kitty got older, she eventually became a decent leader. She trained Nixon and he was a better leader than her...although when hurting he was a bit of an @ss. Most people are too so I always gave him a pass on that. Sorry to anyone whose dog's got a correction from Nixon. I know two did at the last VA get together.
Willy is extremely emotional right now. He's holding himself together well but he is trying so hard to make us like him. The car ride home was over 5 hours and he had two emotional breakdowns. The first time, Cookie just let him swap spots with her. The second time, she stepped outside her comfort zone and did this. Cookie hates strangers touching her butt. This is a huge no no! She just looked at him and sighed in resignation when he did that. They stayed like that for 2 hours until we pulled into the driveway.
We took a quick walk before heading into the house. Cookie was too tired but eventually agreed to do it. She surprised me again by sandwiching Willy between us. Nixon used to do this to her when she was afraid. Kitty did this to both Nixon and Toughie when we first got them. Toughie pretty much always was walked this way at night because he was afraid. No one was allowed near us outside after dark, not even Rich unless he left the house with us.
A lot of Willy's paperwork has been lost as he went from home to home. Three adoptive homes prior and three foster homes. All of the notes from the track are gone so I'm going to see if I can find his trainer. Tomorrow he goes to meet Dr. Huff for the first time. His rabies certificate and tags were lost by his second home so he's going to have to get another rabies shot. Cookie will get a chiropractic treatment tomorrow and hopefully an acupuncture session in the next week. She asks for acupuncture by presenting me with the spot you put the first needle in. She gets more than acupuncture though - trigger point massage, ROM exercises, and checking for any new ouchies.
He doesn't know how to go up and down stairs. I was showing him the landing and getting him to put one leg up on the first stair. The second time, he decided to scramble up the stairs in a way that made Rich jump up and scream, "IS EVERYTHING OK?" Willy is now sleeping next to Rich in the office. We'll probably put him in the webmaster harness to teach him to go DOWN the stairs. He can do the back porch stairs, all 5 of them. There are 10 to go back downstairs. Excitement the first day home! 🙂 He's sleeping really hard too so I guess getting up the stairs was stressful.
Congratulations and welcome to your new home, Willy! I love that Cookie understood what he needed and let him comfort himself in the car and on the walk. That is a fantastic sign. Six homes in such a short timespan - I cannot wait until he realizes that he is home for good.
I can't remember if you're coming to the VA get together. Will we get to meet Willy?
WOW... how amazing!!! Thank you for sharing in such great detail about your homecoming with Willy... I can't even imagine. It sounds like it will be a beautiful match!
Welcome home Willy ... you are about to live the best years of you life!
Congrats!

Our story: Broke rear leg in June 2013 - non-conclusive results for cancer so leg was plated and pinned. Enlarged spleen in September 2013 and had it removed and was diagnosed with Hemangiosarcoma and started chemotherapy. Became a Tripawd January 8th, 2014 and definitive Hemangiosarcoma diagnosis. Three major surgeries in 7 months and Shelby took them all like a champ only to lose her battle to cancer in her brain. We had 8 amazing extra months together and no regrets. #shelbystrong #loveofmylife
I've been waiting for your update to post. Oh Ingrid I'm so happy it was a match for all of you. This new guy surely deserves the wonderful home he will now be given. Sounds indeed like Cookie is taking him under her wing so he becomes the dog he was meant to be. Hopefully with your love guiding him Willy will feel "home" very soon. Congratulations!
