I'm curious if anybody has dealt with this thing called "Reverse Sneezing" with their fur kids?? Yesterday Lucian started making this weird noise like he was trying to hock up a loogie (gross I know but not sure how else to describe the sound). It freaked me out and I'm thinking what in the world is going on with you. I gave him some Benadryl thinking maybe it was allergy related.
I checked Dr. Google and for this type of noise it's pointing me toward reverse sneezing. From the few things I've read there's nothing that can really be done except rubbing the throat or pinching the nose...
Anyway, I was just wondering if anybody else had dealt with this and if there was anything that helped (allergy meds, supplements). I'm currently giving Lucian puppy vitamins (one in the am and one in the pm for his weight class).
I tell you after going through everything with Leland I'm just hyper vigilant with Lucian.

May you finally be healthy and running free at the Rainbow Bridge. Until we meet again my sweet boy!
OH YEAH!!! Scariest sound in the world....at first!!! I think Ive experienced that some time or another with all my dogs!!! Some just every now and then...and some more frequently!!
In all of my situations I did absolutely nothing per the vet, as it just sounded scary and you think they are choking...or so.ethingnis caught in there throat...or even worse thoughts....anyway, it's not anything to worry about at all!!! And, of course, the vet disclaimer...........
Myrtle has done it a couple of times. In her case though, it's fro. trying to inhale her food and it gets all caught up in her slobber, etc.
My Bodie would just do it rsndomly sometimes completely unrelated to anything! He could be sitting in the chair with me and just s tart doing it...I don't think it ever lasted more than ten to fifteen seconds...very scary the first few times, then you just get used to it!
There IS a cure though!!!! ICE CREAM!!!!
Happy Hannah had a glorious additional bonus time of over one yr & two months after amp for osteo! She made me laugh everyday! Joined April's Angels after send off meal of steak, ice cream, M&Ms & deer poop!
Thanks Sally!!! Yeah, Lucian was napping on the couch yesterday and out of the blue just started making this noise. He did it a few more times throughout the afternoon. I'm sure my husband thinks I've lost my mind because I keep asking him if he's heard Lucian making this noise...of course he hasn't.
I'm sure hubby is thinking I'm being the overprotective mommy...

Jasper hasn't done this but Shelby did it her whole life! Freaked me out the first couple of times she did it but it seemed to work itself out. Sometimes if Shelby seemed freaked out by doing it and I would rub her back or her muzzle/neck area to soothe here but really it was no cause for concern.
I know if you haven't heard it before OR if you've been through what we have all been through, it can be scary! But Lucian is a healthy pup so I am sure it's the same as Shelby.... just something they do.
Hugs and love!

Our story: Broke rear leg in June 2013 - non-conclusive results for cancer so leg was plated and pinned. Enlarged spleen in September 2013 and had it removed and was diagnosed with Hemangiosarcoma and started chemotherapy. Became a Tripawd January 8th, 2014 and definitive Hemangiosarcoma diagnosis. Three major surgeries in 7 months and Shelby took them all like a champ only to lose her battle to cancer in her brain. We had 8 amazing extra months together and no regrets. #shelbystrong #loveofmylife
Yes, reverse sneezing have had that done to me. It can be scary. Snickers has done it. Sassy did it once in awhile. I always just rub their throats.

Sahana,
My first Lab Duchess did this reverse sneezing thing her entire life, which was just short of 16 years. She did have seasonal allergies to different pollens, especially anything oak, (and we are completely surrounded by oak trees where I live!) and had terrible allergy to flea bites. Don't necessarily know if this played any part in her doing the rev. sneezing thing, but I think it had something to do with it. My father-in-law's long-haired miniature Dachshund does it all the time, too. She also has seasonal allergies.
Like Sally and the others said, it is pretty scary the first time you hear it, but thankfully otherwise harmless.

Oh, and yeah, Sally's ice cream idea is awesome.....!!
I haven't had a pug that hasn't done this! The first time Maggie did it I was going to rush her to the vet. I called my uncle (who gave me Mag) and he practically laughed at me!
What Lucian needs to do is open his mouth and take a breath or swallow- that's why they say to pinch the nose or rub the throat. With Maggie I had to rub her throat, but with the other pugs I can cover their noses until they open their mouths.
In my experience it has nothing to do with allergies. Obie is my worst allergy dog and he does it the least.

Tri-pug Maggie survived a 4.5 year mast cell cancer battle only to be lost to oral melanoma.
