I know that this topic has been covered before, but I cannot for the life of me find the thread.

When we got Ollie, I asked our vet's office for a recommendation on an insurance policy for him. They said that they had had good luck with VPI, so I chose that one. I was surprised to find that they would cover his allergies that were diagnosed after we bought the policy...to a point. The initial testing and medications were covered fairly well, and I was pleased about that. This year, though, I have been told that I reached my yearly maximum benefit by February, which means that the amount they are paying out is less than my premium for the year. They have a rather complicated list of benefits.

Needless to say, I am in the market for a different policy. I will keep the VPI for the length of time that needs to happen to avoid a coverage gap, but I really want to find a policy that is easier to navigate and that has better coverage. I definitely don't want to end up down the road a few years and find that my insurance won't pay for some unexpected problem.

Any suggestions?

Kathi and the Turbotail April Angel...and the Labradork

Murphy is a five year old Lab/Chessie cross. He was hit by a car on 10/29/12 and became a Tripawd on 11/24/12. On 2/5/13, he had a total hip replacement on his remaining back leg. He has absolutely no idea that he has only three legs!

UPDATE: Murphy lived his life to the fullest, right up until an aggressive bone lesion took him across the Rainbow Bridge on April 9, 2015 and he gained his membership in the April Angels. Run free, my love. You deserve it!

While I can't answer any questions about allergies or claims ... I can say that Jasper has https://www.petsbest.com/ insurance. Our monthly rates are reasonable and I think they will cover stuff at a good level if we need it.

Honestly, pet insurance is almost as confusing to me as my own heath insurance with deductibles and the such. I hope we'll never have to use it but I think I remember this one being pretty highly rated on that thread a while back.

I should add, they might not cover pre-existing (aka allergies) but maybe worth a phone call?

Good luck!!!

Our story: Broke rear leg in June 2013 - non-conclusive results for cancer so leg was plated and pinned. Enlarged spleen in September 2013 and had it removed and was diagnosed with Hemangiosarcoma and started chemotherapy. Became a Tripawd January 8th, 2014 and definitive Hemangiosarcoma diagnosis. Three major surgeries in 7 months and Shelby took them all like a champ only to lose her battle to cancer in her brain. We had 8 amazing extra months together and no regrets. #shelbystrong #loveofmylife

Thanks! After checking things out, we decided to go with Pets Best.

Come to think of it ... I think after our bad experience with another insurance telling us everything was pre-existing and refusing to cover since Jasper was a rescue and not a puppy when I rescued her, I think we did decide on Pets Best after hearing about Wyatt's experience. I know that Rene and Jim research stuff really, really, REALLY well and I trust their opinion.

Like I said ... so far so happy ... but no claims (knock on wood) and our premium is manageable! clap
