Muscle doesn't weigh more than fat ... in Jasper's case!

My poor little booty girl... apparently Jasper needs to lose some weight! She has gained 2 pounds since last June and no increase in food or anything. If anything, she eats less since I cut out her eggs since I got lazy making her eggs. She gets 1 cup of kibble split between breakfast and dinner. She also gets baby carrots, cucumbers, green beans, spinach (when I have it) and any other dog friendly veggie! She loves her veggies!!!

She's been holding steady at about 20 pounds for a few months now (I really notice when I carry her through the airport security each time we fly) or have her in her carrier since her madre isn't that strong!

I asked her vet if it was perhaps muscle since she does a lot of 'booty buster' walks but he said nope... she needs to drop a pound or so. Which doesn't seem like a lot but is harder on a dog!

He also said that the serving recommendations on her dog food tend to be heavy-handed meaning she probably should only have about 3/4 cup (the horror).

So extra veggies and less kibble and more walks ... she gets about 45 min of walking a day (split up). Sadly, she isn't quite as in love with cardio as I am and would prefer to play in the house with her bally ... but I guess running around a 500 sqft apt counts...

Poor Jasper Lily... any other thoughts on how to drop some pounds would be great! I just think that "Jasper got back" (as in baby got back - the song).

PS - this is us at the beach a couple weeks ago! She was smiling!!! I couldn't believe it!

And vitamin D therapy ... it's been hot in LA!!!

Last one ... look at that smile! She is such a happy girl! Proud of her!!!

Enlarged spleen in September 2013 and had it removed and was diagnosed with Hemangiosarcoma and started chemotherapy. Became a Tripawd January 8th, 2014 and definitive Hemangiosarcoma diagnosis. Three major surgeries in 7 months and Shelby took them all like a champ only to lose her battle to cancer in her brain. We had 8 amazing extra months together and no regrets. #shelbystrong #loveofmylife

She IS smiling!! OMD! And I can guarantee yo each person who sees this is smiling right back at her! It just can't be helped!!

And we all always smile when we see a post of yours with Jasper Lily!

I am ZERO help when it comes to helping my dogs "diet"...er...lifestyle change, whatever! To get just 3/4cups a day..that is a horror indeed! Maybe you could find a good kibble where she could eat a bit more but with less calories, without compromising nutrition

Okay, who was it that sometime in the last...oh....maybe two years, did a brilliant breakdown of getting th most nutrition out of calories, how not to get wasted calories...all sorts of good stuff!? It took a lot of analysis and rime, but it was quite i informative.

KAREN?...SHARI?...maybe Dr. PAM? I still haven't come close to "mastering" searching on here, so maybe one of you can find it.

And Jasper, I don't care what that vet says, muscle does weigh more than fat! And you are built like a brick poophouse! A strong, lean fightin' machine!!

Seeing these poctures made me so happy today! Thank you girls!

LOVE!

Sally and Alumni Happy Hannah and Merry Myrtle and Frankie too!

Jasper tell Mom that's just your "winter weight" and she should've waited till June to weigh you.  😉   I'm with Sally no help here on dieting for doggies but LOVE those happy happy pictures!  She looks a perfect weight to me.

Love the pictures.  Don't ask me about the weight thing because mine all have put on the weight this winter since they haven't been out much.  Have to sign up for our new dog park so Snickers can get some exercise in if Jazz has to have surgery (not sure on that yet).

I love that she is smiling yay JL.

All that happiness is catching up to her, lol !! She looks great to me but I guess even 1-2 lbs over can make a big difference in a smaller dog..... I think adding veggies is great, but maybe too much of them can add extra calories maybe? I also find myself adding veggies and a few fresh fruits into my girls meals, especially spinach, I read that it is good for the heart and Zuzu needs all the help she can get....

It seems like she gets plenty of exercise, and you take the best care possible of her, so things will work themselves out 🐾💜

Love and hugs to you and Jasper L.,

Cute pics! You are making everyone jealous with all that sunshine and beach time!

So she hasn't gained any weight since you posted about it last October, that's good. She doesn't look bigger but yep, one extra pound of fat on a dog is like five on us, so good idea to start reducing those extra love handles now. Did the vet check her thyroid levels?

Also, have you thought about doing some FitPAWS workouts with her?

I can't find that post that Sally was referring to but it's likely somewhere in Eating Healthy.

AWE... thanks y'all! She is a pretty cute girl! And I really think her booty muscle is pure muscle .... not fat! I think since she's been holding steady at 20 pounds (sounds dainty to those with the bigger pups) that she's really just evened out and is where she needs to be.

That said - I am reducing her kibble by a little bit and increasing her veggies (spinach is her fav). The vet said she could have all the veggies she wants but I don't want to give her too much for belly aches!

Rene - we have NOT tried FitPaws but we will for sure. Jasper loves games! And playing!!! Lord, that dog could play fetch 24/7 ... she is play, play, play but when I try and make her run or brisk walk with me, she goes about 2 blocks before she's dragging behind. I think if she's not 'chasing' something... it's just not fun! 🙂

But yeah... she's a happy, happy girl!!!! And she loves the sunshine! We call it 'vitamin D therapy' time! way-cool

PS -= I'll browse the healthy eating thread... I think I used a calculator online to figure out her daily calorie needs and her dog food was falling under that. Maybe she isn't as active as we thought!

Jasper Lily! Humans pay big bucks to get a Brazilian Booty like you jave!! You're looking fine girlfriend!

Alsion, I think you're right about her not chasing something, or sniffing around for things....running for the joy of running...not so much!

Wish I coukd remember where I saw all that caloric breakdown stuff. Maybe it was a reprint from dog advisor......

JL, I really, truly think you and Lucy are long lost sisters. She eats so little, yet weighs so much. She is laying on her side right now and her legs stick straight out from her body. She sort of reminds me of a potbelly pig. Maybe you can take a laser light when you walk. She can chase that.LOL I love, love love that smiling picture of the 2 of you. Also, I think I am coming to LA. Too much snow and zero temps here. Uggg! Sorry, I am not a lot of help on the weight loss stuff as my girl is quite chunky. I did, however reduce Chandler's weight by about 5 pounds. Helps with his arthritis since he is 12. I now use a single one cup measuring cup to measure his food. He also gets wet food. I realized that the 2 cup clear one I was using made it easy to give a little over each time. Lori, Ty and Gang

TY GUY, Best Black Lab ever! Diagnosed  and had amp in January, 2014. Kicked MRSA's butt. Earned his angel wings on April 16, 2014. Run Free my boy and don't forget a shoe. Ty is a proud member of the " April Angels". Ty sent us Daryl, a Tripawd rescue in Sept. of 2016. Daryl is 5 +or -. We are also Pawrents to Chandler, a Border Collie mix who is 15 and 1/2, Lucy, a Corgi who is 7, 2 minis, 2 horses, and a feisty cat named Zoe. Zoe had a non skeletal Osteosarcoma removed in July 2015. No Chemo, she was at least 16. She is going strong although she is now completely blind. She is now close to 20 and her hobbies are eating and sleeping in front of her personal heater.

LOL Lori!!!! That's a great idea. Seriously ... we've been home about 20 minutes and she was at daycare all day and that blasted ball is in my face. I know I will miss these days but still.... OY! Madre needs a nap!

And you can come out here to LA anytime!!! We would love the company.... but today it's raining. 🙁

And Sally ....LOL ... yup the Kim Kardashians of the world pay good $$$ to get a booty like Jasper's .... she should (and does) embrace that junk in the trunk!

I love that photo of us too..... inching toward changing it on FB ... 🙂 Still means I love and miss Shelby but really shows how much Jasper has wormed her way in ....

hugs and love!

Sally... I was trying to do a screenshot of my FB profile but I can't do it but basically ... you have a "profile photo" and a "cover photo" ...

this is my profile photo:

And this is my "cover photo" ... which would stay the same so both my girls would be there.

It seems so incredibly trite to even debate or have 'issues' with this but I've been trying to change my profile photo for months now but I worry it will seem that Shelby's been replaced. See... I am one hot mess here. LOL

This reminds me of....When we were filming the PBS episode with Jerry, there was an off-camera moment when I whined that I didn't have my own still camera available to take a picture of Jerry and the producer who was giving him a smooch. She, the producer, said to me, "You don't need a picture, the memories are here", while pointing to her heart. She was so right. Photos are temporary but memories and love is forever. Shelby knows that too.
