Or maybe she was just too distracted by the people outside last night and was practicing her vocal chords (she was drenched by the spray bottle when I was done with her and kept on barking!!!!).

This made me smile. I tried the spray bottle on Tani a couple times to calm her barking down.  She would bite at the water, like she was attacking it, and bark more!

I also tried throwing a towel over her head when she barked. Of course she kept barking, but at least it was muffled a bit...

OMG ... brilliant! I'm SO going to try that!

I've never had a dog that barked like this ... growing up, our dogs would bark when the door bell rang or something and Shelby never barked in her whole life except maybe once. But Jasper .... oy vey... that does does not have an off button. I've tried letting acknowledging her and letting her know it's ok, telling her to shut the F up (which I am sure my neighbors love), spraying her w/the water bottle, a little booty smack ... the only saving grace is that she does not do it all day when I am not home.

Our story: Broke rear leg in June 2013 - non-conclusive results for cancer so leg was plated and pinned. Enlarged spleen in September 2013 and had it removed and was diagnosed with Hemangiosarcoma and started chemotherapy. Became a Tripawd January 8th, 2014 and definitive Hemangiosarcoma diagnosis. Three major surgeries in 7 months and Shelby took them all like a champ only to lose her battle to cancer in her brain. We had 8 amazing extra months together and no regrets. #shelbystrong #loveofmylife

Our trainer told me about this stuff its a compressed air from sentry called "stop it"  (get it at Petsmart) you hit the button at the same time the air sprays you say "sssst"  its supposed to stop them.  Eventually you can stop the air.  The reason why she suggested it is that Jazz likes to bite Snickers legs as I am putting her harness on.  It does work.  I just need to keep doing it.

Or try an air horn/whistle anything that you can get her attention for a min then do the ssst

I had a friend who took an empty soda can and put pennies in it. When the dog would bark she would shake the can. Worked for her.

Harmony became a Tripawd on 10/21/14 (MCT). She left us way too soon on 11/1/14.

Michelle and Pam .... these are FANTASTIC suggestions ... I am going to try them both! I'll probably try the can w/coins tonight since that is what I have easily at my fingertips ... Especially since Jasper doesn't seem to mind the spray bottle (and in fact, is expecting it when she barks as seen by her looking AT me when she barks as if she's waiting for it)...

BRILLIANT!!!

I had mixed results with the penny can.  It was somewhat effective with Trouble who was really mellow, but it really annoyed Duke who was pretty high strung when we first got him.

I have heard a couple of different things. First is that if we raise our voices when telling them to be quiet, they think we are joining in the fun and barking with them. The other thing is to use a low, soft, growls tone, kind of like the mother dog reprimanding her pup. I know my son HS always used that low, kind of a menacing sound and it works to help his dogs learn what is not acceptable. We also use the phrase, "ah, ah, ah" to let them know they are out of line.

Kathi and Murphy

Murphy is a five year old Lab/Chessie cross. He was hit by a car on 10/29/12 and became a Tripawd on 11/24/12. On 2/5/13, he had a total hip replacement on his remaining back leg. He has absolutely no idea that he has only three legs!

UPDATE: Murphy lived his life to the fullest, right up until an aggressive bone lesion took him across the Rainbow Bridge on April 9, 2015 and he gained his membership in the April Angels. Run free, my love. You deserve it!

SO little miss itchy is getting to try Apoquel. Her vet was part of the trials and he deals w/super itchy dogs. He did mentioned the prednisdone and I'm not sure we want to go that route yet ... So she is going to try that (it's $$$ though) and one other drug that starts with the letter T. We'll pick it up tomorrow.

And apparently "someone" needs a bath more frequently. I know I say this a lot but damn Shelby was low-maintenance... Jasper hasn't had a bath in a couple months and she needs them weekly w/her itchies. :-( Thankfully she fits in my kitchen sink.

Oh and her 'stink' ... as long as it doesn't smell like fritos or mushrooms, it's probably not yeast. I can sniff her feet but I'm pretty sure she's just got normal doggy BO.

My vet also said no fish oil until we figure this out. He gets that I want to treat this as holistically as possible but also the reality is, with the drought and as hot as it is here already, allergies are the worst he's seen in years. This is now a year-round issue for LA dogs. It's 90 this weekend here. So yeah, it's hot.

I am just thankful it's probably environmental because figuring out the food or products would be so impossible since I am not consistent on cleaning stuff.

And we're also on year-round flea meds so confortis for her!

She is becoming a pricey little dog and this isn't covered by insurance since her allergies are pre-exisiting.

She's lucky she is cute and likes to build forts. Her fort of the day! Image Enlarger

Alison,

Be careful with baths so frequently.  They can get dry skin and sometimes end up with infections because it washes all the good stuff off too.  Contact Chris (Franklin's mom) she has a soap called dirty dawg soap made from goats milk.  Awesome stuff.  The first time I tried it I washed the dog with commercial stuff (I always wash them 2 times) I thought I got most of the dirt out.  Wow was I ever surprised.  I washed them again and I had what seemed like a gallon of mud come off when I washed them with her soap.

Lets say I will never use a commercial soap unless I absolutely have to.   They are soft & clean and 100% natural.

Hugs

Thanks Michelle! That's why I didn't wash her (or Shelby) that often... We actually have a special soap from her vet that is for allergies but I'll definitely reach out to Christine if this doesn't work. I used to use Suave Strawberry on Shelby since she would smell so pretty! And then when it was too hard to bathe in my tub, we used what the do-it-yourself places offered. I can't actually bathe dogs in my tub unless I get in with them (the way the sink is positioned, I would have to be flat as a board and have longer arms)! LOL

WOW... washing three dogs!? I have huge respect for that ... I barely want to wash one 18 pound pooch!

The medicated shampoos are conditioning so they are okay to use frequently.  I use the Douxo "Calm" shampoo for Julian and he is softer and shinier after his bath.  These shampoos also have ingredients to help keep the skin's normal protective barrier intact.  Allergic dogs have a defect in their skin cells that allows the pollen and other allergens to trigger the body's immune response so keeping the barrier intact is pretty important.  I use the Douxo chlorhexidine shampoo for my Pitts when they get bumpy scabby skin (pimples) and that flushes the hair follicles and removes bacteria.

I have used the Dirty Dog soap and it does get the dogs clean but it is not medicated for allergies so I am not sure how drying that would be in the long term.

I have had excellent results with Apoquel.  Emmi started taking it in August and hasn't had a trip to the vet since.  A first in almost 3 years.  She was constantly at the vet for meds, even with weekly baths. Good luck and keep us posted.  I'd like to know what you think.
